yes, i just find it funny that they themselves can't see how transparent and self-serving they are. same with putin's remark regarding the debts, that russia would very likely forgive the debt as an olive branch to the new govt; of course because when you don't have a hope in hell of getting it back, might as well use it to make you look magnanimous. oh well, at least i don't mind it as much from the russians as i do when the french do it... |

It's all about Russia grandfathering its sweetheart oil deals with the Hussein regime. Expect the same BS from the French a$$clowns, too...

from the reuters article: 16:43 17Apr2003 RTRS-UPDATE 1-Russia says scrapping Iraq sanctions not automatic (Adds quotes, background) MOSCOW, April 17 (Reuters) - Moscow has in the past consistently lobbied for sanctions to be removed, mainly in the hope of making good billions of dollars in oil contracts for its firms, the biggest buyers of Iraqi crude oil before the U.S. campaign. Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov said on Thursday economic sanctions against Iraq could not be lifted unless the country complied with previous U.N. Security Council conditions. President George W. Bush has urged the United Nations to lift economic sanctions on Iraq after U.S.-led forces toppled President Saddam Hussein. "This decision cannot be automatic. It demands that conditions laid out in corresponding U.N. Security Council resolutions be fulfilled," Ivanov told reporters. "For the Security Council to take this decision, we need to be certain whether Iraq has weapons of mass destruction or not." A vote by the U.N. Security Council, where Russia holds veto power, is required to lift the sanctions. U.S. officials have said that they do not expect either Russia or France, which also opposed the U.S.-led war in Iraq, to pose an obstacle.
