Jason, you are right, EXCEPT for your "this admin" nonsense. Clinton & Gore had the White House for 8 looooonnnng years. Now, during that time, perhaps you can recount for us all of the times they took your advice, deflected defense and/or welfare spending, and made progress at weaning the US from buying oil from countries who want to kill us? Whatsa matter? You mean the automakers & defense companies had just as much sway with the PREVIOUS administration as they have with the current one? The facts kind of get in the way of your shamelessly partisan argument, don't they?

Jason is right. It's like a TV store in 1972 that could end up being stuck with a warehouse full of black & white TV sets. Better to sell out first and THEN invest money into the color sets so they won't be left holding an unwanted bag of goodies. The big oil companies have to sell out their warehouse full of oil and gasoline BEFORE it becomes worthless due to better technology. How much would you care to wager that as soon as oil supplies REALLY start to dwindle that "Low and Behold" we JUST discovered a better technology. Which means that THEY just decided to pull the new technology blueprints out of the secret vault where they've been sitting in the files for 30 years or more.

I agree with Jason. If we HAD to come up with an alternate source of energy BAM! it would happen pronto. But it will never happen til we exhaust our reserves or simply can't get to them. I kind of wish we would do it just so the middle east would be sitting on the biggest grease pit in the world. Nobody is dependent on them for Lamp Oil. |

Here's an idea: take one month's worth of gov't spending on defense and put it into fuel cell/solar cell/hybrid research. I guran-damn-tee you that we'd have the technology in a year to eliminate the need for fossil fuels (the transition would take much longer). We will do anything remotley close? No. Why? Power companies and automakers and two of the largest, if not the largest, political influences, esp. with this administration. Too much money would be lost. I'm sure I'll get flamed for the administration comment, but c'mon, it's true, regardless of your politics. |

The tax break seems like the way to go that is easiest; I'm not sure why someone doesn't get that going. All it would take is a large (few grand) tax break on any vehicle exceeding 50mpg. Kind of like the anti-gas guzzler tax. |

amazingly enough, i actually agree w/ the kennedy article. hydrogen is not the (immediate) answer, hybrids are. but we are a capitalist society, and need some kind of monetary inducement to change our ways en masse. there needs to be a tax hike on mogas (smallish because roughly every penny of tax = $1 bil in yearly revenue). there needs to be a tax break for people buying hybrids, on the order of a few grand. dave is right, if we reduced our fuel consumption by just a little bit (and widespread hybrid use would do just that, and in a hurry), we could drop prices tremendously, and thereby become less 'dependent'. |

It's good to make people REALLY think about this issue. And, in fact, if Americans were to cut their gasoline & electricity consumption by just 5%--merely 5%!!!--we could entirely wean ourselves from Middle Eastern oil. Not from all oil imports, mind you; just from those countries who want to kill us, and are using our money to finance this... |

Who all has seen their ads? I think they've made 3 of them so far. They (the ads) seem to really upset some people, which I find a little humorous. I like it that someone has finally decided to try to link oil money to terrorism and war, but it's a shame the commercials won't be ran on major networks because they're "too contoversial". |
