944turbos have gotten a bum rap regarding maintenance. I bought mine in 1996 when it had 89K miles on it. Now it just turned 140K. I do about 7 track events a year and use it as a semi-daily driver. I run 1.1 bar boost on it. The maintenance I do is an oil change every other event plus timing/balance belts yearly. As I do it myself, the cost is nil. I have an o-ringed head so I don't worry about the head gasket. I have a partitioned oil pan as well and do not exceed 6000 rpms. What kills the engines is allowing the oil level to get too low and running them at rpms above the original redline. Generally, performance chips allow you to do this which is unwise. What causes the problem is that the oil hole on the #2 rod bearing is drilled on the wrong side so the forces on the oil due to crank rotation work against oil flow. Also, another pitfall is running the engines too lean - turning up the boost without increasing fuel pressure. So, my engine has about 50 events on it, and puts out far more power than stock. It could blow up tomorrow but I doubt it. |

NSX is one of the absolute best track cars ever built. Can eat up most cars with 100+ more HP when driven correctly. It's a monster on the track. Not for drag though, although a 4.5-4.9 sec 0-60 and a 12.9 1/4 isn't all too shabby. 911 TT is a bear too but got to watch the turbo when it kicks in. |

R8!!! Germans know what they are doing, probably more so than the Italians. I would love to see Audi into F1 now that they arent factory backing R8's any more. watch out ferrari! |

The Supras are good for drags in my opinion...it just seems difficult to throw the car around.....how about the RX-7, Porsches. Have'nt been in a 360 challenge...but seems great for track though... What about the Mitsubishi Evo... |

I have to agree that it looks like the supra is a reliable 700hp streetcar but not a track car. Even though the One Lap team did very well last year they had many problems and are experiencing problems this year as well. No doubt its seems to be a great car but I feel that reliable term is getting tossed around too much. As far as at track car...I'll take a 360 Challenge. Gotta love the F1 Paddles |

WEll if your on a budget (and lets be realistic here most of are) its very hard to beat the MKIV Supra. If it were for track use then it would obviously have to be a hard top instead of a Targa. Starting weight is 3420 pounds. Once you ditch the heavy duty power seats for race seats, ditch the rear seats, conver thet car from the heavy small twin sequential setup to a single turbo setup, convert the heavy cast brake calipers to an upgraded 8 piston cast aluminum setup you can get the car to about 3220 still full interior and A/C (you can obviously save more by going from there). There is tons of aftermarket parts available and the knoweledge base is very vast. The factory bottom end has proven its self to 900 rear wheel horsepower so the engine doesn't need any modifying and will be quite reliable for consistant boosted track use in the 650rwhp range. That puts it in the mid 700's power wise making it one of the fastest cars in the straights and with the new Stop tech brake kit you will have fantastic stopping power. Upgraded wheels and rolled fenders allows for 315's rear 275's front for plenty of lateral stick and a huge selection of coil overs/sway bars/strt bars etc allow for plenty of handling tweaks. This setup has proven its self competative against fully track prepped and built vipers with 3 times the budget. This setup is also very reliable, probably the most reliable 700hp setup you can get into on any factory engined car short of exotic supercars and even then its questionable which will out last which. If you blow an engine no problem you can get a brand new short block for $2500 and a full head rebuild for about the same. Hard to beat for price peformance. Check out one lap of america 2002 and 2000 Supra's placed in the top 4 both years and I think top 2 or 3 in their class against fully track prepped vipers/porsches/ etc. By the way the tranny in the supra is a very very durable and strong German Getrag 6spd. It is quite a bit stronger the Tremic in the Viper. There is also a pretty cheap sequential shifter conversion for it. A setup like this can be put together for about $60,000 including the price of the car depending how clean/low milage a car you start with. |

Just a poll...wanted to know your favorite track cars giving due weightage to handling and performance rather than top speed....another high point...would be reliability, maintainance and availability of aftermarket parts.... |
