I had an orange crate with the shifter on the middle bar. It was way cool! remember nearly lossing it many times racing changing gears at high speeds taking my hand off the handle bar to shift gears.

Hey, take a card from a deck of poker playing cards and cloth pen it to the spokes and the sound it makes was just awesome when I was a kid.

Tillman, I had a Sting-Ray knock-off when I was a kid. The real thing was too expensive.

Looks great, how's it ride? :-)

Scary thing: there's a Schwinn Stingray forum, and those guys are good!

It's a 1974 Stingray Deluxe in Opaque Red, which apparently is a 1-year only color.

Just in case anyone cared :-)

There was a time when a Sting Ray bike was all I ever wanted on the planet...
This is WAY cool, or should I more appropriately say 'groovy baby'.

If the shifter is on the handlebars, it's probably a 1974 or later model. Before 1974, the shifter was mounted on the main bar that runs fore and aft from the handlebars to under the seat. At that time, the shifter was like the 4 speed shifter in a Sting Ray corvette. But thanks to the dawning of the "World of Whimpyness", somebody in the government decided that putting the shifter on the main bar would require a person to remove their hands from the handlebar in order to shift gears, which would cause them to immediately loose control of the bike and crash into a bus load of innocent orphans and kill themselves and everybody else. So starting in 1974 (I believe) the shifter was moved to the handlebars. And I'm not so sure that Banana Seat bicycles are even available today. Most likely because it would mean that TWO kids could ride on one bike at the same time, and in this politically correct world, that simply could not be tolerated.
Those bikes came in several versions called Apple Crate (red) and Orange Crate (orange). Don't know if the shifter location was optional before 1974 or not.
If you hadn't bought it for $25 or so, I would have! I have a 1930s vintage bike that I bought for $10 at a garage sale. One of these days I might fix it up. But your vintage Sting Ray is cooler AND worth more.
I also wonder how many hundreds of miles were put on that bike by kids who were NOT wearing one of those stupid politically correct bicycle helmets.

Can you find a year on it?

Look at this and see what you can find that's comparable:

I found this at a local garage sale for a very good (cheap!) price. I always wanted one when I was growing up. I know it's silly, but what the heck :-)

Are there any Schwinn experts here that can give me a lead on the year? Thanks.
