Ralph, for some reason it was only until a few months ago that i had some desire to get a street bike. The scary thing is that a college student like me can actually afford one. I'm not sure if my parents would approve of me gettiung one though. I have toyed aroud with buying a used dirtbike, as one of my buddies has a quad (raptor 660) so we could go riding. There are plenty of places 20 minutes away from me, and my grandparents own over 100 acres in VT, with trails and gov't access roads (riding on them is legal) passing through. Also, i think riding one would teach me how to contorl a bike. |

Tim: Do not forget that power can get you out of problems. ie.... When you want to avoid getting "boxed in" while riding on the freeway. I always insist on having a (go to "escape") lane to run to. I always assume the motorist will do something stupid. I expect them to run stop lights, jump over to my lane etc.... I do not ride often. This helps to keep me alert all the time. I always assume the worst. The power obviously can help defensively. As you are aware you can wipe out on an old FZR 400 almost as effortlessly as the mighty GSX 1300R Hayabusa. The stock bike has been clocked at hi nine second 1/4 mile passes with a professional rider. Riding has also made me a better cautious autombile driver. I am agressive and cautious at the same time. Racing a bike on the track should be no more than a 600cc for quite some time. Alot of experienced street riders realize that there street 750's that are modified for off road are way too much on the track. I posted for you a few months ago to be careful, if you decide to ever purchase a sport bike. They are hard to get off once you have your own. That small entry level 600 can become a GSXR 1000 in as little as a month. It is summer and the dealers have lots of hot bikes to sell. Ralph |

Art, they do scare me. One of my friends had a new ZX600R for a few weeks before he decided to sell it. Damn that thing got up and went, and that was with his weight+mine on it. It didnt have such good top end though. I'll be more content (and safer) with a fast car. |

Tim: The Suzuki GSXR 1000 is a 750 with a larger crankshaft, etc. Weight difference about 15#. The 600 is a 750 with a little less weight, about 10# lighter. What I'm saying is that the 1000 weights about 25# more. Much easier to ride because of the torque, much easier to go faster because of the torque. If you plan on racing, I'd go with the smaller bike, because it will make you learn how to ride, but if you're just going to ride with your friends, get the 1000. If it scares you, use less throttle. (don't be ashamed, those liter bikes scare the crap out of an awful lot of people.) Art |

After riding the R1 for a while now I think I'm going to downgrade back to a 748 or the new 749 Ducs. I might go for a naked bike too. Maybe an Aprilia Tuono. It's a liter bike but at least it's a twin. If not the monster sounds good too. Cheers |

I've always been interested in sportbikes, but its not too likely that i'll ever own one because they are way to dangerous. If i did get one, it would be something small that handles like a race bike, like a GSXR-600 or a ZXR-600, not one of those heavy pigs with a 1000+cc engine. Half of my concern is that i dont have the self restraint to drive one responsibly and half that an idiot (99/100 of people on the road are idiots) will hit me. |

Rob where do you work ? I have a Leica. Dallas is just around the corner. I will trip the shutter at the correct moment. Perhaps we can put a $50.00 bill on the floor next to her bike. Ralph

Get teh 748 properly serviced. The clutch shouldn't be that stiff, unless you've modified it from stock. I'd check the cables, linkage, etc. something is wrong. That would be a perfect bike for a petite woman, relatively light, agile, and not so much power as to intimidate her. Art |

There is a HOT asian girl here at our office. 5 ft. 10 at least and always wears skirts. I don't know much about bikes, but I was told she drives the fastest one of all our co-workers. I have a friend with a mod R1 and they say her's is faster. I think it has a turbo on it. I love it! She drives it every day it doesn't rain. |

Taek: Don't forget about the Japanese Pocket Rockets. These are the small 400cc Crotch Rockets. There may be a distributor or two that has these brought in as "grey market" bikes. I assume they are street legal? I am not sure. I always wanted to purchase one. I never got around to sitting down and accomplishing it. I sat on a ZX-4R in H.K. They are real tiny. It felt good. I have the opposite problem Ralph. My wife wants to learn how to ride a bike but I'm at a loss as to bike choice. I had a Ducati 748S, but the clutch was too stiff and finding neutral was like playing the lottery...Good Luck!! Now I have an R1 and the bike scares the crap out of me! I'm thinking of getting one of those Aprilia RS250 two stroke dreams, but they're not street legal. The search continues. She's about 5'5" or 5'6" 110 pounds with winter clothes, soaking wet, holding a brick. No way I'll throw her on an R1. The wind might blow her right off the seat! I've been riding for about 6 years and the R1 makes me nervous at speed. Throttle control is so difficult at high revs. Crack that sucker to WOT and you'll flip the thing! Next time nix the Cavalier and shoot for the stars! Get a Mitsubishi Galant! or is it Mirage? Cheers |

WOW: I saw a gal riding a Green Kawi ZX-12 in Albuquerque with her boyfriend / Hub. He was also riding a ZX-12. They were going fast on the I 25 freeway. I was late for my flight from ABQ. I was happy to try and keep up with them. I tried to keep up with my Cavalier rental car. I gave up at 100 MPH. No contest; if you thought I had a chance. Perhaps I can rent something different next time ? She was not a big 200 pound gorilla. I am not positive, but she looked pretty good. She was wearing a helmut. Positively a female. You could tell from her pants etc.. I have seen gals riding sport 750's. I have never seen a gal ride something that big. There is a pretty girl here in Houston that rides a GSXR-750. She is petite and around 105 lbs. I often would street ride on the weekends at nite around 12 years ago. I live in a large city. I would seldom see women ride any type of bike. There seems to be quite a few more gals riding serious sport bikes today. I still have not had any luck in trying to get my wife to learn motorcycling. I told her she would look great meeting her girlfriends on occasions with an R6. I know it ain't going to ever happen. I asked her to name a price. She never answers that question. I gave up by now. Well next life ~ maybe ? You go girl !!!!! Ralph |
