I've been lucky to see a lot of big names at small venues. I'd rather see a lesser band in a 500-or-less-seat theater than the Stones at Soldier Field. Smashing Pumpkins headlined with Chile Peppers about 10 years ago--that was awesome. Also saw Stanley Jordan in a small club from about 6 feet away. |

Earth Wind and Fire was unbelievable live! but I'd have to say that Prince was my all time favorite live performer, I've seen him in his glory days of Purple Rain and I saw him last year in a much smaller venue, he just keeps getting Funkier! |

Well, the best was the Allman Bros. But one of the best shows that I have ever seen was a recent Paul McCartney concert (putting on flame suit). No really, he put on a great show. Dale |

I remember some prominent radio personality saying that the Ramones were the #2 rock and rol band, right behind the beatles. They influenced most, if not all, of the bands i love today. |

Saw Stevie Ray at Lakewood amphitheatre in Atlanta with BB King, Dr. John others.... impressive jamming. Several Grateful Dead shows stand out. When those guys were really hitting it, on an upbeat vibe, it was incredible. There were times where they were literally playing 3 songs at the same time and yet all 3 were distinct. Mind blowing. When in school in the late 80's I saw REM play the 40 watt club incognito several times. Always good shows if Stipe was not blasted. One of the best shows I ever saw was the Ramones. The stage was totally dark, the lights suddenly go on with the Ramones all standing there ready to play. Joey steps to the mike and very quickly says: "hello, were the Ramones". They instantly launch into Blitzkrieg bop. They play for 2.5 hours solid. ZERO break between songs. As one song is ending, they scream 1,2,3,4 and INSTANTLY launch into the next. Just as the last song is ending, Joey again steps quickly to the mike, says: "thankyou, Goodnight". the lights all go out, thats it. BANG. 2.5 hours of insanity. IT was a blast! |

This will sound insane to some, but because of the work i do, i have over the years gotten to see a fair amount of bands (unfortunately, it still does not revive any I missed, eg Hendrix). Anyway, I've been attending these R&R Hall of Fame, Grammy, etc. events for years, where you get to see alot of these bands in a very intimate environment. Granted, some of them are past their prime. And, even though the opening event for the R&R H o F in Cleveland had everybody from James Brown and Aretha to the (then) latest pop bands, i will tell you, hands down, one of the best performers i have ever heard, is.................... Al Green. |

Tim I think I heard that stat on 60 minutes when they did a special on them. I'm sure other bands can bring in alot of people as well of coarse.Well if your judging their music based on the everyday album I would understand that comment.Glen Ballard ruined that he gave them alittle to much advice. I hate to say this but I find it hard to accept your assessment of any music when you mention Bon Jovi. Let the 80's go man. |

Aaron, i would like to see proof of that stat. Im not saying that its totally wrong, i just want to see it.(i would have guessed it was bruce springstein, since he toured all last year, selling out stadiums). Also, i would be willing to bet that if it's true, they probably had more shows than anyone else. other bands could easily draw more people. People like DMB because his music is different and no one else does anyhtng like it. Well theres a reason for that. His music is garbage. I hear Bon Jovi is pretty good live. Im seeing him at giants stadium this summer. |

I'm surprised i didn't see this thread earlier. Well I'm going with my favorite band the Dave Matthews Band. More people saw a DMB concert last year than any other band. On a side note i hate to say it but Mick Jagger is one of the worst singers i've ever heard. But that's just my opinion. |

I bet everyone at those shows back in the 60's and 70's wsa on some kind of drug. Inthe 90's, i think way more people (eg. me) just do some drinking rather than doing drugs. Alot of people still get high for shows too, not me though. I like a different kind of bud, known as budweiser. (lame attempt at a joke). As a side note, i saw Everclear this saturday during the day, and they put on a nice show. for those who may not remember who they are, they had some hits in the late 90's, one ofthem being that song "Father of Mine". It was alot of fun to see them live, since i listened to their popular CD when i was in highscool. good fun music. |

Jonas, maybe all those pyrotechnics are to distract you from seeing that they suck. The chili peppers did what they did with only a big TV screen behind them, showing them, and lights. The best part, i thought, was when they ended the show with 'Give it away", the stage went dark. Then, in a minute, a single spotlight shines on john frusciante, who is sitting on a speaker and playing the intro to "Under the Bridge". Best encore ever. There really arent too many current singers that can sing better than anthony keidis. |

I've seen most, but not all of 'em. Missed Hendrix. One of the best, believe it or not, was Living Colour (who opened for the Stones on one tour). Saw them many times, including at a concert in Monmartre in Paris (before the war) and they were brilliant. One of the best on the road, Asleep @ the Wheel, plays Bob Wills stuff-sort of "Big Band Country" not the hokum of Lyle Lovett, but the real deal. Oh yeah, and Lowell George was pretty good in his day. And Joe Walsh in the James Gang era. (Although when i saw him play with the Eagles a few years ago, you'd swear he was playing note for note the recording). One of the most dynamic performances i've seen is Iggy Pop, backed by Sonic Youth. |

My wife and I recently saw the Stones @ Turner Field in Atlanta. It was the single best concert I have ever seen and I have been to a lot of concerts over the years. Those old farts can run circles around any band half thier age. It was absolutely amazing. What is interesting about it is I have never really been into the Stones but since the concert I have a new respect for them. I actually bought my first Stones album the next day and I will definately go see them again if they come here! |

http://www.rollingstone.com/survey/dynamic/ I've seen almost none of these bands live, but i like alot of them. I just went to a Red Hot Chili Peppers concert last weekend, and it was unbelieveable. They have arguably the 2nd best bassist (2nd only to victor wooten), THE best singer, and one of the best guitarists. They also go nuts when playing thier songs, so they got my vote. They've proven themselves in their 20 years of making music. Even though i've never seen them live, U2 would probably my 2nd pick. I have seen videos of their performances, and they look amazing live. They are also my 3rd favorite band. What's your pick? |
