Peter Let me get you to earn some brownie points dear, why not START the car for her.... "Honey I started your car and let it warm up/cool down for you - because I want you comfortable...." She'll think of you as Mister Romance for the kind gesture.....and you make sure the car warms up.

hmmmmmmm now if men would treat their women like their cars and let them warm up!!!! Seriously - I fully agree that there are many women that do not know a THING about their vehicles. I've taught many how important it is to have correct tire pressure, oil changes ....etc etc. Peter - try and have a chat with her about the car - a lot of women just don't know. For any of you local Toronto guys - we are having a female only high performance driving school July 27th - why not send your wife or girlfriend. All female instructors - a great day to learn some safety (stop/avoid...skid control) and basic performance driving. Nika www.racerchicks.com

In my experience most women don't seem to have any comprehension about how a car should be treated. Though I suppose women might say most men don't know how to take care of their skin and exfoliate or something... If all she does is drive it cold then you (almost) have nothing to complain about. My last girlfriend would run her car until it started getting hot, very hot. That is she drove it so long between oil changes that it got to the point of having no oil. I would put a couple quarts in so there would be something on the dipstick and tell her to take it straight to Jiffy Lube. A few months later the car would start getting hot again. The thing would be out of oil again, oops, she never got around to getting the oil changed. She did that at least half a dozen times while I was with her. It was a testament to the strength of Mazda engines, I can't imagine what would happen to a Ferrari engine if run out of oil on multiple occasions. My mother does the turn & go in her C5. Doesn't bother me too much as she has the automatic tranny and the Corvette runs pretty low RPMs unless you really stomp on it. What really gave me a heart attack is when she tried to do a burnout the day after she purchased it. Put it in neutral, rev engine, shift into drive. arrggghhh.... That and she ignores the tire pressure warning and drives around on the run flat tires. Too bad there aren't more women like Nika around. |

Newer cars you drive lightly until operating temperature. Its in my manual.. and probably listed the same in most mass produced cars like mine. Sunny |

It is my understanding that new cars do not benefit much from a warm up period. As long as you drive slowly for the first few miles. Tolerances are tighter . I bought a S2000 and my biggest pain with it is that you have to wait till you see three bars of temp to use the full 9000 rpm's . I live next to some killer corners and the thing will cut out at 6000 rpm's until it's at 3 bars. But that said I turn my cars over every 1.5 to 2 years. Let the next guy deal with any problems. WFO (even with a cold motor) |

Every morning, I watch my girlfriend get in her new car, turn the key and drive...No warm up at all. This is such a pet peeve of mine. Just seeing if I am alone. What is with this with women? EVERY girlfriend I have ever had does this and it drives me nuts! I tell them that their car will last about as long as their makeup, but they just don't care. In the big picture, I will have to pick up the repair bills! |
