I have a herniated disk. Every now and then if I do something mindless, it acts up causing pain in my legs, etc. The original injury occurred 30 years ago.

Whenever it gets to bothering me I grind up some ice and put it in a zip lock bag. I place it on the floor and lie on the bag. This helps in my case by relieving the pain that can be considerable with the disk pressing on a nerve.

I am not a medical doctor and just offer this as something I do that has worked for me over the years.

Really what I wanted to say was get over it! It happens to all of us, you'll do fine without anthing else. But to a nonmedical person this sounds rude. Many think medicine is some great secret society with all this hidden knowledge, mostly its common sense(what ever that is) and trial and error to see what works.
But to say that I need to very careful, with the usual disclaimer as above.

I agree but I only can give advice, I don't know the whole clinical picture.
I think the biggest issue here is not getting to worried about back pain, it happens to all of us and usually resolves on it own.

A study was done on back pain after 5 years and those with surgery did the same as those without. I think the best advise is not get too excited, relax and see you physician if it doesn't resolve in the time frame you think it should or has in the past.

Again the worst is loss of function or sensation and I don't think that is happening here.

Roentgen,

I thought about adding this.....

"Going to see your primary physician is just my current opinion, please seek care from your primary care physician."

But it just sounded dumb once I wrote it!!!!

The first thing to remember is that the vast majority of problems with the lower back get better on their own. The things to be concerned about is loss of function or sensation. Pain is not included here as being a long range problem, it may feel that way but really not.
Go about your daily duties, don't stop movemnt.

Talk with an orthopedist they deal with these problems all day long.

And of course the usual disclaimer: seek your care from your own primary care physician don't take my or anyone elses opinion.

Pretty sound advise from the Doctor of Strange. Never hurts to have it checked out.

Go now. If you really hurt your self, it could make treatment harder if you wait. It could also make the injury worse.

Saturday morning I was working out in my garage. As I set down my curl bar on the ground I felt this PAINFUL sting in my lower back just a little left of my spine. I thought at first I may have pulled a muscle but the more I ask about it the more I think I may have ruptured a disc.

It was real bad when I first did it and it seems to be getting a little better but it still hurts pretty bad. If I move a certain way I get this sharp jolt of pain that I feel in my hips and legs. I don't want to hurt it anymore but I have to work and stuff fortunatly I have a desk job but even this is uncomfortable. Ok so bring on the bad news. I'll probably head tot he doctor this weekend if it doesn't let up. Thanks for reading :-)
