William, go to www.qbike.com or www.bestbikebuys.com to try and find the best deal for a new shock. Also, I've got a friend who is a MTBer and is running his own repair "shop" out of his garage (I know you're in Houston, he's in Clear Lake).

Tim, avoid Wheelsmith spokes like the plague... Only use DT when having your wheel built.

As for the rear shock Will, have you checked out Cambria Bikes? They always have clearances on last-year models of all parts...

Will's reccomendation on the Rynolite rim is a good choice....beefy, but not overly heavy either (and relativly inexpensive). If it for the rear, get a 36 spoke set up, front you can go 32 and be fine.

Brian and William, i ride on trails that are pretty rough. Being in the northeast, its very rocky. I weigh about 185. This isnt the first time my rim has bent, it is bent more than usual. I want to get a stronger one so i dont have to true the damn thing all the time. I havent ridden in a while, but i want to get back into it because i want some variation in my excersize. Running 6 days a week gets boring, so i wouldnt mind tossing in some riding for a few days a week with one of my friends. I should probably get a road bike, because its a better cardio workout i think, but being a college student, i dont want to drop the cash for one, and i also think trail riding would be 10x more fun.

Tim,

I use Sun Rynolite 559 x27mm. Yea, I a little wider but I was trashing rims like crazy. It's a DH rim but I'm 200 lbs. + so I tend to be harder on equipment. I recommend it. After riding full suspension this long, manufactures need to group complete bikes with a better set of rims. I've had the rim set for 3 years & no problems yet.

As for the rear shock, I contacted FOX & waiting a response, I worked in a bike shop in collage & I did rebuild some systems. When rebuilt, you tend to have a greater chance of failure with these older systems. Not worth the headache. Still shopping for a shock online, its a bit of a joke to me. I cant find what I want. Anyone here about the Aggressor 5th element? Expect to pay 250.00 to 375.00 for a no problems shock. Sometimes you got to spend some green so you don't have so many parts breaking. I'll post a photo of my overbuilt tank so you guys will understand.

William,

I was wrench in a bike shop for about 4 years during college. I spent lots of time fixing suspension parts (also raced expert class downhill). The Fox shocks are relativly easy to fix. I would reccomend either finding a good shop that has a mechanic qualified to rebuild suspensions, or better yet, send the shock back to Fox. They will charge you a fee, but it will be much cheaper than buing a new one. A rear shock should be rebuilt every year to two years depending on how much and how hard you ride. I used to rebuild the front and rear shocks on my DH bike 2x - 3x per year.

Tim - How much $$ do you want to spend? Are you going to get a whole new wheel or just have a new rim laced on to your current hub? What kind o riding do you do? How much do you weigh? Mavic, Sun and Bontrager all make a wide range of good rims depending on your needs.

Search online. I buy stuff from "pricepoint.com" and have been happy with them.

If they don't still make what you want, you can probably still find one on ebay.

I would go for another fox shock...I think they still make the vanilla. How many inches of travel can your frame handle?

I just back from an uneventful ride. It appears that I have blown my rear shock on my Santa Cruz Heckler. The seal is gone & there is oil leaking everywhere. Its down for the count. Auughhh! It was the shock that came with the frame when I got it back in 1998. I'm not sure if they still make the FOX Vanilla R series, there maybe no point in rebuilding it. It's a real pain if you ever tried. Any recommendations for a replacement rear shock?

Thanks.
