I have a Canon G3 its awesome - 4MP, all the features you need, great battery life. You can change lenses etc. I did a lot of research before buying. You can prbably get it for $600-$700. |

www.stevesdigicams.com for reviews. I have a Nikon Coolpix 5700 (5MP) and am perfectly happy with it. I replaced a Sony S85 (4MP) that was stolen from me, which was also great. Ernesto |

Marci & I both have Cannons. For the size you can't beat them. Very high quality pictures, standard flash cards.

Tim, another site you can check out is www.cnet.com. They have a lot of electronics reviews. Another thing about my Canon, it's almost the size of a standard camera, which I personally like. Some people may prefer something a little more compact. |

Olympus makes a really compact 3.2mp cam called the Stylus 300. One of the main features they are selling is the waterproof feature. I don't know how important that is to you. On the downside, Olympus uses it's own format for media storage. As for Canon, I would recommend the elph s400 (previously stated), and the Powershot G2 and G3 (a lighter update to the G2). I personally don't like the s45/50 line as it is too big to go in a pocket but doesn't feel as good as a larger cam like the G2/3 in my hand. A word of warning though- if you have imperfect vision, you might want to reconsider the Elph...it doesn't have a diopter control. The G2 and G3, however, do have such a feature. Another great feature that the G2/3 has is compatibility with 1gig microdrives. It's probably overkill, but you can take a ton of pics and movies and not worry about running out of space. Plus, microdrive prices went down significantly recently. Nikon makes an excellent 4mp camera called the Coolpix 4300. My GF has one, and it takes excellent pics. The two main drawbacks to it in my opinion is the lack of audio when recording movies, and it can be kind of slow to turn on/go from one pic to the next. But that may be a problem with all digital cameras. If you want a great website, check out www.dcresource.com. They have news re: release dates for new cams, very in-depth reviews of cams (including links to other web reviews), and a lot of discussion boards. Finally, you might want to look into getting your cam at Compusa. They have a Technology Assurance Plan (TAP) that covers just about anythign and everything you can think of. It's also hassle free. We've had 1 camera, 1 laptop, and 2 pda's replaced under this program. Best of all, they give you a great deal on credit towards a new piece of equipment. Examples: GF got full value for her 2 yr old pda to go towards a new one; while camera didn't get full value, they let her get any cam with the same MP. Not too bad. Compusa also doens't really don't look to see what's wrong with it- if a new model comes out that you want, drop yours and say it doesn't work. In comparison, Wolf/Ritz camera offers an extended warranty that covers everything short of loss. The nice thing about their warranty is that you can extend it as long as you like. This is especially nice if you are laying down some serious cash on a prosumer/pro digicam upwards of $2k digital SLR or are buying a non-digital SLR. Finally (sorry for the long post), don't be overly concerned with MP count. I've done quite a bit of research on cameras, and most people I've talked to think that you don't really need a 4mp if you're just gonna put pics on your computer or occasionally print at 4x6 of 5x7. If you are blowing pics up to at least 8x10, you should look into a higher MP rating. It might be a good idea to stop in to a local camera shop and look at some samples. I know Wolf has a photo album showing photos of various cams at various sizes (and of course they label what kind of cam took that pic). |

I've got a Canon PowerShot G2. It's 4 megapixels and very easy to use. Very versatile, and cost under $400. |

I have a Sony 5 megapixel with nightvision. If you want scenery style pics and size is not a concern, go for it. Canon also makes some really amazing 5 mega cameras that accept all of the lense attachments. But if cost is a concern the Canon's go for about $2k and the Sony is about $900 |

Tim: I really like the Elph S400. It is 4 megapixel about the size of a pack of cigs. Good picture quality as well. Get a larger memory card for whatever camera you get. Right now you can get a 256mb card for about 80 dollars at Circuit City. Thad Brown |

I picked up a Sony with a CR writer built in. It's bigger than those with flash cards, but it beats lugging a laptop around to download pictures at the end of the day. The mini CDRs hold 150 MB or so and cost a dime or so each. IMO that's better than spending a few hundred on memory sticks to get you through the trip. |

I'm in the market for one. Any advice? I'm looking for one thats relatively compact, but size isnt a restriction. One reason i've finally decided on getting one is because i'm going on a trip to Reindeer lake (in canada) this summer, and carrying rolls and rolls of film isnt somethnig i want to do. Plus, the picture quality would be better than if i scanned regular pictures. http://www.dpreview.com/ <- so far i've found this site that seems helpful. |
