For what its worth, a car in a private container shipped from England to California took 28 days from when I dropped it off to port and picked up in So Cal, with an insured value at $15k was $1100 and change. $3000 for a container? Thats ocean going robbery.

A friend shipped his Jag XK140 OTS with an estimated value of about $50k, insured and in a private container, from California to Belgium (est. 6 wks) for under $2k.

You can ship a car containerized and insured to or from Australia or New Zealand for less then $3k and thats a much longer ocean going trip for sure.

You might want to do some research first to see if these prices are the norm. $900 is one thing, a container is usually not 3-4 times the price.

I'd check about getting a container just for yourself then. You can ask about being able to load it yourself or at least supervise someone else doing it. The dealerships might be able to provide you with some suggestions also.

The FOC isn't that active out here, but I'm probably still going to join once I get my cars gremlins worked out. They haven't done a drive/meet in a couple years, but I think it'd be awesome to get one organized.

If you have any concerns about the safety inspection once you get here, I know a place that is pretty sleazy about it.

Im going to buy a home in Hawaii, and ship my cars there. I want to find the safest way to ship my cars, and if i can, one in which no one else drives or moves them.

Here's a link to their website:

http://www.matson.com/autoship.html

They were pretty helpful when I shipped my car. Decent customer service, the only negative thing I can say is they can't give you specific shipping/arrival dates, but I don't think the like to have exotics in their possession long. They said it would take 4-6 weeks to ship my car, and from drop-off to pickup it was 11 days.

Are you moving out here or just selling a car to someone out here?

I just did it back in December. From the West Coast it's about $900. Or you can get the entire container for around $3000(I think). Matson is the only company that can ship low vehicles, the other company wouldn't have anything to do with my 308. You can ship it directly from the East Coast too, I'm not sure the shipping costs though.

Make sure the car is clean, leave a note inside the car regarding any odd operating conditions. I left one reminding who ever operated it that 1st gear is in an odd spot and told them not to wash it when it arrives. They wash them as a courtesy and I'd rather not have someone else wash my car. Also make sure you get a copy of all documented damage befor the car is shipped in case they give you new scratches.

You'll be required to have you car(s) insured and with current tags. Also tell your insurance company you're shipping the car, I've heard some companies add "marine coverage". When the car arrives you'll have 30 days to get it safety inspected and registered. The 30 days doesn't matter much, just make sure you don't show the papers when you try to register it and you won't have any added fees there.

If there's anything else you need to know just let me know.

Allan, this is just my guess, but they will put your cars on a truck or train and ship them to california, then they will go on a container ship and get shipped to Hawaii. just my 0.2.

Anyone ever done this? Any info on the most reliable way? Costs involved?
