Bill, LOL! Good one! Yeah, I only do that in winter. That Viking garb is just too heavy for Texas summers!!!

It's hard for me to get stressed. I'm a pretty lowkey person. In fact, my wife gets upset how laissez faire I can be. Things just roll off my back without leaving any residue. But if I do get a little stressed, exercise does the trick. Maybe the 200 miles of bicycling a week is a stress inhibitor???

My remedy is not for everyone. I like playing first-person shooter games to relax, which I think would do the exact opposite for many others. Gives me the rush when I get a head-shot.

Oh, and flying a plane sure does take my mind off of my practice. Can't think about anything else. I went up this morning. It's terrific to soar like an eagle (OK, a turkey!) on a beautiful clear morning.

Joseph...I spent 3 years in TKD. It was great, but I smoke a bit more than I should and the workouts got difficult! I encourage anyone to get into martial arts. You get a good workout while you gain confidence about yourself and your ability to defend ones self if the need arises. I hope to get back into it soon:-)

I prefer martial arts (tae kwon do specifically) to working out because the schedule and built-in reward system (higher belts) encourages me to keep going back. It is also more social (IMHO) and I always come out more relaxed than when I went in. Meditating doesn't work for me, the last thing I want to do when I'm dwelling on something is spend an hour alone in a quiet room; I need to get the idea out of my head.

I can't say that I have *completely* learnt to relax. The reality is that escaping stress/relaxing typically involves escaping work. And that can be impossible especially if you own manage your own business or are in a particularly high powered job - there are only a few things that let me leave behind work....

1. Have one friggin guess (hint: see hot chicks thread...)

2. Ed is absolutely utterly right....
Lifting weights/working out is absolutely excellent stress relief IMO.. you can get soooo angry with some people that you don't feel like lying down etc... lifting weights helps you VENT that anger/frustration and when you come out of the gym particularly if you've had a satisfying workout you can feel mildy euphoric.

Re: stress management. I think that waiting until you are stressed out is part of the problem. I have worked out 3 mornings a week for 23 years. If you get a good nights sleep, work out, and eat right, I think that you can handle a good deal more stress. And, keeping your blood work looking good is important. Don't smoke at all and watch your weight. Far too many Americans don't take care of themselves, then get all stressed out because they didn't.

So, an ounce of prevention is, in fact, worth a pound of cure. Not preaching, sharing. You asked.

You'll learn to relax when you have a coronary or breakdown..The body and mind need rest...period....What good is all the work if you collapse before you can enjoy what it got you. I think about things which are peaceful and just clean fun...biggest part is deciding you ARE going to relax and then DO IT...NO thinking of other ...It doesn't take much but 20 minutes of mental relaxation will do wonders...REad psychcybernetics and learn about "creating" the peaceful place in your mind where you are relaxed in the mist of complete chaos..

I get up early on a Sunday before all the nuts hit the road and go for a ride up to the Cavecreek area on my Harley. No stereo, just the wind , sound of the engine and beautiful scenery. It even looks different not being in a car.

Marq-Patrick...The $500 fishing boat was a humbling experience! I am holding the boat at the dock (a '67 16 foot 40HP green piece of %$#&) while all the boys are putting their $40K ski boats in the water! Regardless, I had fun! I could have been in the middle of the lake in a float tube and it would have been just as relaxing!..Ps: $400 or the $500 is the value of the trailer!

I drive, work out or just go for a walk. I used to live a mile from work, so the walk home was the perfect pressure valve. Now I'm a few miles away, and the el train only seems to exacerbate a bad mood. Thinking about plunking down $500 for one of those fishing boats...

I see that a lot of you have things you do to rid yourself of stress. More power to you; I'm, seriously, envious of your ability to do that. My problem is that when I do something that is generally considered 'relaxing', I still find my mind racing at some god-forsaken speed thinking of things I need to get done, etc... I do not know how to 'turn it off'.
Perhaps William's choice, meditation, should be something I should look into.

It took me along time to learn to relax, and compartmentalize. Had to live through the suicide of a family member and a few other tragedies to really internalize some of the basic truths about life. Having said that, substances are a false respite (and actually make things worse), and working at relaxing is just what it sounds like. Easy answer: i do what i feel like doing, whether its driving, reading, walking, smoking a good cigar, watching an old movie, etc. Exercise is also wonderful. I remember vacations where i spent the entire time on the phone, reading faxes, etc. Life is too short...

Cant beat laying down on a bed and listening to some good old classical music. Either I close my eyes and daydream while I listen, or it puts me right to sleep if im really exhausted. I promise that youll never have a more relaxing nap if you fall asleep to classical music.

Assuming most of us here are professionals and work stupid hours, just seeing what everyone does to relieve stress. I did not do the normal 16 hours at my home office today (its Saturday) and I went fishing all day. Not that I really like to fish, but it was extremely relaxing being captive on a buddies new $500 boat! I feel that my blood pressure went down a few notches! I do not always make time to relax, but after today, I may do more stuff like this...What do you do to staive off a heart attack?
