Remember vinyl hunting in LA in the 80's, when vinyl looked like it was going to disappear. Guy had two very large British monitor speakers, honestly can't remember what they were, Tannoys, whatever. Asked him why one was in one room, the other in a different room. He explained that he thought stereo was a gimmick, and he only did serious listening monophonically.

Yea, I had one but the record would skip while driving. Not to mention my records all melted in the Texas heat. Worst car stereo system I ever had.

DEs, when I was in college, the intro level computer course was on a Commodore Pet computer. You booted it up with a cassette tape. Hey... what about video games.... Pong, anyone? lol

Ed - LOL...! i've never even heard of 78s...! i used a dial-up connection for my computer at home until the computer broke; now i don't use anything. How about rotary phones...? Anyone still have those...?

How about computers...? When i was 10 or 11, i got my first computer; a TI 99/4A - it was like a huge calculator...! Beat that... :-) The monitor was a 13" television that i used to switch back and forth from computer screen to regular television... It was so slow, it made my father's 286 look like an Isaac Asimov space-age computer...!

LOL, Bob, i used to use them all the time... In fact, i had to use one the other day... & - i knew exactly where to find one...!

How about this...? used to hang wet clothes from the laundry on a clothes line and on these racks that would unfold upwards - can't remember the technical name for them...

Also used to listen to an 8-track player when i was a kid... my father was huge into music, had a cherry wood cabinet full of records and used to play them from time to time... i don't know if he had any 45s, though...

Have any of you young guys ever seen a payphone? It's a big black thing that used to hang on airport walls and outside of 7-11's. You actually put a quarter in it and you could call anybody locally! Unbelievable in its time!

Chris, was U of M Aero BS in '91. Would have loved to have stayed for grad school, but after being born in the U of M hospital, spending 4 years there, having a grandfather (aero) and uncle (Irish Lit) teach at U of M, numerous relatives working there, they still wanted to charge me out of state tuition. Said "screw that" and headed back to Texas and got PAID to go to Rice.

Don't remember Overture Audio. I'd always go to a place on State Street near Liberty (was an upstairs place with tons of used stuff) NS sometimes a place off Liberty next door to the Michigan Theater. Those were the days without the Rega. Had an el cheapo JC Penney rack system. The hum was terrible coming from the system.

Good luck with the Planar 25. It's a nice one. It would be nice to get a tube preamp. I've got a tube amp, and my phono amp is solid state. Just a little DB Systems box.

Hey James - does that mean you're a UofM grad?

Nice choice of turntable by the way. Did you ever get a chance to check out Overture Audio?

Chris, first off, I'm an Ann Arbor native. Born there, first 8 years there, back to college there, plenty of family there. May be there for Christmas.

1) the few shops that carry vinyl. Here in Houston that pretty much means Soundwaves in the Montrose area. Not much for dance tracks so they are my only choice. Still plenty of places for used vinyl. When I'm in Boston I'll head to Virgin or Newbury Comics on Newbury.

2) Both - certainly the older stuff is next to impossible to find new, except for some reissues (picked up The Cramps "Smell of Female" last fall on "Smellow Yellow" vinyl reissue. Get most of my indy label music on vinyl (Sleater Kinney, Fantastic Plastic Machine, Looper, etc)

3) Rega Planar 3 with Grado Reference Platinum

4) plenty. The first question asked is "Can you still buy records?"

In the Montrose area and up in Boston there are still quite a few vinyl buyers.

Cool! This should be a fun thread!

1) If I want the latest rock album, I can usually find it at Hot Topic. Actually, I was floored to see that they carried vinyl at all! Otherwise, Acoustic Sounds, Overture Audio in Ann Arbor, Dusty Groove, Ebay.

2) Depends on the album.

3) Denon DP2000 with Grado Gold cartridge. (Looking to upgrade to Rega Planar 25 and low output Grado Reference Sonata cartridge and tube phono preamp)

4) None of my friends get it - until I blow them away with a demo! Even my wife who could care less about fancy equipment prefers the sound now.
