I must respond to my son Dana's comments about our recent run from Bellingham to Laconner with the Ferrari bunch on Chuckanut Drive. I haven't had so much fun in years! The cars, the people, and the weather were very nice. The speeds were, as Dana put it, " spitited" and what a great way to be introduced to the Ferrai marque. In the past I have owned several sports cars, a 1959 Austin-Healy 100-6, a 1963 Alfa Julietta Spider, and a 1964 Alfa Sprint. After I bought my first Alfa I found out that the Healy was nothing but a small two seat truck. I thought that the Alfa's were a much better handling car than the Porsche but less muscular. But if you want to talk muscle one must experience a well prepared Ferrari.
I DID enjoy our run down Chuckanut, Dana, but that smile on my face at the end of it was really a grimace because I had soiled my pants.

WM Hart,

It is a true story, a lady was buried in her beloved Daytona wearing a light blue nightgown, it was in the early 70s I believe

Wayne, I' more sure of the last name than of the first. The footage on the "F for Ferrari" video isn't all that clear on names just a short sound bite. But I do remember from my youth seeing a news item on TV about a woman being buried in her Ferrari. (back when this type of stuff was really unusual.)

Ron, I actually have the picture of my dad smiling 'that' smile but for the life of me I cannot get images to load to this site! I did it once then never again.
The pictures of the run I speak about this spring can be found in the thread 'Chukanut Drive'.
Frank's last ride in the black Testarosa is tomorrow (Friday).

It was just a hundred miles or so down the road from the 1967 Impala Arizona Rocket Car.(which was actually a 1959 Impala mounted on a mine car track, but I digress.)

"Sandy West" from Texas? Now it's beginning to sound like an urban legend.

My niece's SO, a founding member of the LA Grim Society, told me the lady in question was buried in(if memory serves) San Antonio TX. I think her name was Sandy West. At the start of the video "F for Ferrari" is some old footage of the event.

It's nice to see F-Car owners doing things like this.. I think it's pretty nice of you to do this..

I guess it would really be out of line to ask for pics on this one...

Found this true story all over the Web:

Upon the death of sculptor Ed Kienholz in 1994: "his corpulent, embalmed body was wedged into the front seat of a brown 1940 Packard coupe. There was a dollar and a deck of cards in his pocket, a bottle of 1931 Chianti beside him, and the ashes of his dog Smash in the trunk. He was set for the Afterlife. To the whine of bagpipes, the Packard, steered by his widow Nancy Reddin Kienholz, rolled like a funeral barge into the big hole: the most Egyptian funeral ever held in the American West, a fitting [exit] for this profuse, energetic, sometimes brilliant, and sometimes hopelessly vulgar artist." --Robert Hughes, Time Magazine, May 6, 1996

Not a Ferrari, though.

I've heard the burrial story also, except it was a Rolls Royce. I think it is an urban legand that changes depending on who's telling it.

William, that's a sad story for him and his wife, my condolences...

However, i hope my final act will be a bit more dramatic... Sirens blazing, twisted metal, broken glass... Maybe a little fire, illuminating an otherwise blackened night sky... Some gasps from onlookers as they view the results... No skid marks, though - i don't want to have stopped or tried to stop... Yeah... :-)

There's this old joke i remember: "i want to die in my sleep, like my uncle; not screaming in terror, like his passengers..."
i'd prefer to be the passenger...

i remember this really old episode of 21 Jumpstreet (remember, with Johnny Depp...?) Where one of the guys goes undercover into a high school and meets some kid whose got AIDS... the kid riDES a motorcycle and says he dreams of one day getting on his bike and flying down the road, right into the sunset- literally. That sounds cool to me... :-)

Sorry Wayne, He wasn't buried in the car. It was later sold to help out his wife & family. I think it wound up somewhere in Houston. I'm just commenting on Des' "i've always dreamed of dying in a car." It just reminded me of what happened.

Bill, DES: I haven't heard that one but I was curious, so I did some Web snooping:

1. In an interview with "STUFF" magazine in 2001, Engelbert Humperdinck claims, "There was a guy who got buried in his Ferrari with the tape deck playing my song, 'Release Me.' They covered him up while it was playing."

2. Artist Jack Nichelson (not the actor) states that the inspiration for his work, "The Lost Bugatti Memorial Reliquary" was a story he had once read about a woman who chose to be buried in her Ferrari.

True? Myth? Who knows?

Des,

Back in Ft. Worth, my next door neighbor had a custom 79 308 GTSi Turbo. It was his pride & joy, He didnt drive it much so it was a rare site to see. Back in 1997, He & his wife went out for a drive. It seemed like a perfect day. Although Mr. Moncrief had a heart condition, he lived life to the fullest. When they returned home. He suffered a massive heart attack in his Ferrari as his was putting it in park. He passed away in his car. Im not kidding. It was the worst experience for his wife., Im not sure if she has still gotten over it.

I guess this story struck me because of the relevance it has to a run I made with the Fclub here this spring. I brought my 77 year old dad with me as we chased 355's, 360's and a TR up I-5 and across the Skagit valley at spirited speeds. When we pulled in to town for lunch he had biggest grin on his face! Priceless! This from a man that used to be a pilot and ran Alfas back in the '60's. What a great way to share the love of a great automobile. Quality time too.
I was told ownership of these cars was an experience to be shared. I agree, it's adds that much more to it.
NOW, grab a friend and go for a drive!

Whart, i, too, have gained wind of such a story... Wayne...?

As far as this whole funeral/Testarossa thing is concerned, i think it rocks... My hat off to the owner of the TR for not getting the heebie jeebies about having an urn with someone's ashes in it, in his car... i've always dreamed of dying in a car... (although one time, the dream was with me in- you know what...? nevermind.)

DJ..You are a good man! Nice job. Last year, a pilot buddy of mine strated a cremation ash spreading business using my Cessna 172. He got his first customer in a week. When he went up to disperse the ashes of our local Chamber president, he opened the window and emptied the container of ashes....The problem is that about 90% of the ashes blew back in my plane...It was a mess! Per my request, he told the widow what happened and she was very understanding (to his suprise). I am not sure I would loan my 308 to him if he wants to start that business again!

Good idea to me. Not trying to be funny but as I skimmed over it I accidently missed the part saying that he was cremated. I was trying to figure out how to fit a casket into a Ferrari.:-) Duh!!

Not to be cheesy or anything but I think the only thing that would really throw things off is the color of the car. Since it's black I don't think it'll be an issue. I think most will understand and appreciate it.

I know this may strike some of you as odd but I feel compelled to share this.
A friend of mine just purchased a 1988.5 TR and is in the process of learning about the 'ownership experience', the good and the bad aspects of it, especially when dealing with people's reaction to the car.
Here is the story;
My friend's father-in-law (Frank) asked for a ride in his Ferrari. Something he wanted to do before he died,(the man was terminally ill). They went for a ride and my friend put the car through it's paces. All the while his father-in-law was grinning like a kid in shear happiness.
Fast forward to this week, in my friends own words;
"My father-in-law died last week,.........anyway his funeral is Friday, first to his church then we go to the grave site....he was cremated. So we had a family meeting tonight (wifes side)on the funeral, they needed a driver for him from the church to the site, and guess what, they were all looking at me!! His wife said,'He loved your car', so me and my black Ferrari will lead the group (with Frank next to me) to his final resting place!! I think ENZO would have loved that!! Took me a while to warm up to it, but you know?, it's all good!! This might be a first???"

I don't know about the rest of you guys but a ride in a Ferrari as a last wish has to say SOMETHING about this marque!. Personally I would be honored to do what my friend was asked to do.

DJ
