Scott,

There are about 100 Brooklands R Mulliner models. Great cars.

Sunny,

I'm not so sure about that XJ6 comparison. I've driven the modern ones and I think a properly sorted R could probably take it. Bentley are torque monsters.

WHart and Omar,

The S3 is comparable to the Silver Cloud III. I agree with you on the new stuff. Just not the same unless you get something like a Continental R Mulliner car. Or an Azure, love the convertible. My inlaws have recently gotten an Arnage Red Label and an Arnage R. They love the cars. My dad though, believes Bentley died in the 40s, soon after Rolls took it over. He still loves the marque because of what it means to him. He drives a Continental R Mulliner almost as a daily driver. The cars are very well put together. They tear down forests and strip farms full of cattle to make these things. Very comfortable.

Lou,

The new Rolls? Add me to the peanut gallery. Don't like it at all.

Cheers

Couldn't you get the Mulliner package in the Brooklands R model? I thought I saw it in DuPont Registry back in the day.

oh, and btw- saw this today in the new Robb Report...a Bentley Arnage Estate!

Arnages are beautiful.. But avoid the 99' model... Had the undesireable 4.4 twin turbo V8 borrowed from the 740i...

Parts are very expensive on any Rolls or Bentley.. Same as Ferrari.. Major 30k mile service is cheaper than a ferrari since the engine doesn't have to come out, but that's about it... Everything else is big $$$ to maintain and repair..

Sorry Sunny, but no XJ Jag comes close to the feel and presence of a Roller or Bentley.. You sit high up in a bentley/Rolls and immediately feel the unique craftmanship that went into these cars... The XJ is cramped and headroom has always been a problem.. Besides, no XJ engine, not even the V12 matches the smoothness and understressed 6.75 litre Ford designed V8

How do you guys feel about the Arnage? A nice 2000 can be had for about the same as a new s600. The main part of the depreciation has been taken and although I am sure there will be plenty more, it would be much slower from here on out.To me,a much better looking car, but not sure about reliabiliy.

I have to agree with Jim 100%. The new Roller is butt-fugly. Looks like an old Soviet Politburo Zil staff car designed by committee & then chopped up and the body parts reassembled. Mayback looks like an S-class on steriods that is just trying too hard.

Stepping back, I am amazed at the sudden lack of grace & beauty from the premium brands: Rolls, BMW, Maybach/Mercedes, Porsche/Cayenne. What's up with that? Why the sudden turns with the ugly sticks???

About the only upper-crust sedans that I think look good anymore are the Bentley Arnage & the Benz S-class.

IMHO the styling of the new UBBER rr in real life is as bad as the new 7 & 5 BMW. I don't think much of the Maybach either looks like a Lincoln town car to me. The front of the new rr is so massivly ugly that the flying lady looks like a midget. This is a bad BMW. RR's are dead.
In real life the new Bentley Coupe looked good but the interior tried too hard. The interior of my Maser coupe is MUCH better as are the rear seats more confortable. These brand engineered cars have none of the appeal of the original ones. I think Wm is right the older ones seem a lot of car for the money.

What do you guys think of the new BMW owned Rolls styling especially the front end and its massive grill?

Omar,
I had a Silver Spur. I beleive the difference in the Spur and Spirit is that the Spur is the LWB and the Spirit SWB. The Rolls I think is the more luxurious of the two while the Bentley is sportier. Had no major problem with the car. BTW the transmissin is GM. Watch out for hydraulic system leaks and that the car sits level. I drove it on a couple of 1500 mile trips with no problems. The car has a wonderful smell.

Taek-Ho, I didnt mean any disrespect, thats just how I could best descripe the pre-Sereph Spurs and such (and what my sister mistakes them for :-p )

I was thinking a daily use more or less. (unless thats really unreasonable for some reason or another)

I like the earlier ones, like the 4 headlight s3 Cloud; the fastback from the fifties (didn't this have a Rolls counterpart), and the unloved pininfarina-styled one from the 70-80's. Shadows seem to go for nothing these days, but i can't imagine parts are a bargain. The Carriage House guy in Greenwich usually has a nice selection of Rollers; there is a mid-80's Bentley convertible that is very old fashioned looking; nothing like the square lines of the later turbo'ed ones. Corniche convertibles, if they are old enough, also seem to be pretty cheap, parts and services issues nothwithstanding. These cars are so conspicuous, and the generations raised on them so long gone at this point, that there is very little interest in the older ones, i think, other than by true collectors. Thus, the drivers and the less collectible ones are, to my mind, a relative bargain, until something expensive breaks.

FWIW, Monaco Motors has a couple '90/'91 Turbo R's that are regulars for service and they invariably compare it to my XJ the few times it was there for routine service (fluids, brakes). They said my XJ was more comfortable, had better performance, and better handling and I was pretty shocked. The comments were not solicited.

The Bentley was more luxurious, no doubt, and you have to love the gorgeous front end. Yah, sure, its comparing it to a '97 XJ6, but its half again cheaper then the Turbo R's. What are you after... a daily beater or a car to cruise around in once in a while?

Having a front or rear set of brakes will run you $400, a tune up is $1000-1200, a pig on fluids, liberal on gasoline use, and a 10+ year old car might have some quirks (electrical). What I pay for maintenance +10-25% across the board, 33% more for a tune up when interval calls for it.

Anyway, the Turbo R would be a good car but its not something you'd chase NSX's up Mt Palomar Rd in, hehe. ;)

Omar, headlights depend on the model. For example, they'll be different between a Bentley Eight and a Turbo.

Bentley will have more sporting variations for sure.

80s Lincoln Towncar but better?! Omar, you've just put tears in my eyes.

I looked into the Bentleys and they just don't 'do it' for me the way the Rolls does with the upgraded lights...I *love* the look of that car...sorta like a modernized 80s lincoln towncar, but just BETTER.

How reliable are they overal? When you say they get pricey what do you mean? (Ferrari level? Mercedes level?) I live on the east coast, mostly in Baltimore during the year, would I have a good shop I could take her too her by?

I am just wondering, as I saw an add for a 97 Dawn with 50k miles for 55k dollars.

For a similar price range and IMO a better car I would look at a 90/91 Bentley Turbo R.

OOOOOO!! Yeah!! Good choice!!

Silver Spirits were from 1980-1989 I think. The Silver Spirit you are talking about if it's 94-97 is probably the "New" Silver Spirit which was limited to about 120 cars in 1995.

There were about 220 Silver Dawns and a tad over 500 Silver Spurs. But the numbers for the Spurs include the Limos. Spurs were from 95-98 for the modern ones and Dawns were from 94-98. A year before European introduction. From 96 or 97, don't remember, all Rolls cars were delivered as LWB models. Before you had a choice.

From 96 or 97 (whenever they went LWB), the Spurs had a turbo.

Maintenance is OK, but can get pricey. Gas mileage is not very good either. The pick of the bunch would be a post 1996/7 (again, whenenver they went turbo) RR Park Ward. A little over 40 of those were made.

Personally I would go with a Bentley.

The saying goes, RR is for chauffeurs, Bentleys are for drivers!

In case you were wondering...Yes, I love Bentleys. My dad beat that into my head from a young age, and boy am I glad! :-)

Cheers

I love the Silver Spirit body style (94-97?) How much do these cars go for? Thoughts on maintaince? Use as a daily?

There prices really confuse me..i see all over the place for similar year models.

Thanks all...they look like great, albiet it slow, highway crusiers.

Oh yea, whats the difference between the silver spur and sliver dawn?
