1. the transmission went not because its american, but because you beat the hell out of it.

2. you need a CAR, not a friggin motorcycle

3. you need a CAR THAT RUNS, not one thats gonna cost you lots of dough to fix up. if you're going to spend all this money on restoring a 30yr old porsche why not just spend that to fix the goddamn saturn. oh, thats right, cause its a porsche.. yawn..

4. you beat the hell out of your cars and put almost 2k miles on them a week.. lets get serious here.. i love you, now wake up!

just my 2 pennies.

If you really want some horsepower, you can do like many other 914 owners have done and drop a small-block Chevy V-8 motor in!! The factory actually built a couple of 8-cyl. 914's (just not with Chevy motors, of course ). That would be some kind of power-to-weight ratio.

DES, my friend's was a track car. He is a big fellow about 240 lbs. Together, he and his 914 weighed about 2400 pounds. It only had 90 hp he said. That is 26 pounds per hp. A Saturn probably weighs 3100 lbs. I'm guessing it has about 182 hp with the V-6. So if you weigh 200 lbs, the hp/wt ratio is 18+. A V-6 Saturn has a quarter mile time in the mid/upper 15's. I have the think the 914 time would be in the 17's.

You can bet that it will handle better than the Saturn.

He would go to PCA events with it and always had a trail of cars behind him waiting to pass.

DES...those 914's are fun little cars! My neighbor had a white/tan one back in '83, and it was a real treat to drive, especially with the targa top removed on sunny days -- pretty quick & peppy too!

I've been researching them lately, and watching the market -- thinking about getting one.

The later '73 2.0 liter 4's are rather desireable. The 6 cylinder models are in short supply; and if you should stumble across a '72 914/6, then you've found a rare one (only about 240 made for the Euro market).

AutomobileAtlanta specializes in the 914, and they have a few fully restored examples that they'd be glad to sell for quite a bit of $$$$.

Good luck on your search...keep us posted.

Jordan, i've changed up my whole game plan; i knew from the get-go i shouldn't have bought an american car and i did, anyway and this is what i get... i'm getting rid of the car and i'll either buy something else or :::gasp::: a motorcycle - something i've wanted for a long time... So the Porsche is still on my mind, just a little further back... i'll keep you posted... :-)

i took pictures of it last night; i'll post them later...

Dont give up on it, to be honest, you would be better off just buying one that is running well. You can get a really nice 914 (2.0s might be just a tad more expensive but not much) for 5k or under. You just have to be patient and look hard. Ebay occasionally gets a nice one for cheap, but most --like now, are pretty bad.

They are cool cars!

Just got back from the mechanic; transmission alone for the Saturn will be $300... No time or money for a Porsche project, i gotta figure something out in the way of a new car... Oh well... Thanks, everyone, though - i appreciate the input...

For those of your who are going to the GP in Montreal you will probably see him with it...

Mark, thanks. Lawrence, is it faster than a Saturn...?

i'm going there on Saturdy and i'm going to ask if it's for sale and for how much and yadda yadda... i'll guess that the engine is in the back - right...?

Like you said, Mark, i should look for rust... Problem is, i don't know anything about cars - at all...! If they guy points to a carburetor and says it's a brake disc, i'll believe him...!

Any key questions i should ask or anything i should check for, like oil in the transmission fluid or transmission fluid in the oil, yadda yadda yadda...

This is really just some chance encounter; i know old Porsches sell really cheap, so if all they want is a few hundred bucks, i'll jump on it, provided it's not going to be a financial nightmare to repair... If they want a lot for it or it seems like it's going to need thousands and thousands of dollars before it'll run, then i might walk away... Any suggestions would be great... Thanks, everyone... :-)

I had a 2 litre 914 when I was in High School. The car had all the performance mods available "in the day". It was a great car.

I would check rust. These cars are notorous. Also check around the lower end of the engine bay.

Of course when I owned my 914 it was a couple of years old. Now you are talking about a 30 year old car.

They make fun cars but the 2 liter engine boxer 4 is underpowered. In standard form, the 2.0 is very slow. Don't have one but a friend of mine did.

Check for rust, then check again - floor pans, front trunk area and suspension points.

You will be amazed at the aftermarket stuff available for these cars (search Automotion, Stoddards, Performance Products). With some engine mods and all the suspension and brake mods these can be VERY fun cars. I had a 911 and have a 308 but have always considered a 914 for a fun car; there are some excellent books dedicated to 914 mods and restoration.

And you can do all this for about the price of a Ferrari 30K service

Anyone have any info on this car...? A local Mitsubishi dealership has one behind their building; flat tire and yadda yadda... What if i bought it (i the price was reasonable) and slowly had it restored...?

Opinions, suggestions, etc. - all welcome. Thanks... :-)
