Like it or not, Dr. Bose is a stellarly impressive businessman. I live not too far from "Bose Mountain" off Route 9 in Framingham where some of the offices and factory work is done. Just impressively successful. The sound quality never did much for me, but I am not aware of any audio entrepreneur as successful as Dr. Bose. Maybe he's not 100% audio genius, but he's 100% marketing genius, and 99% of the time that's 99% of the battle.

Chris, it's true, if you ever do pull a speaker out there is indeed an amp attached to each speaker. Like I said, it's not the best, ok, who am I kidding, the stereo in my daily driver Passat is really good, but for the time it came out (90-96) it did a decent job.

As for the Bose home stuff, I really can't complain about the Acoustic Wave...other than the $1100 price tag. Course, for my home theater, I prefer Yamaha, Macintosh and Pioneer. Although I'd really like to give Marantz a shot.

I too used to have a Z with a Bose system. Not only did it sound like crap, it was always blowing speakers, and they have the amps attached to the speakers or some such nonsense, meaning you have to replace the whole system. Could be salemen BS, but I found a guy who could replace just the speaker, not the system. Same problem developed months later. Fixed again...same problem, etc.

Won't go near them again...

Amar Bose is, in some ways, a genius. I was never taken by his original audio speakers, which involved using a number of small drivers, aiming most of them backwards, against the "back wall" and creating a huge image behind the speakers based on "direct reflection." But the guy was in the right place at the right time, adapted alot of his approaches to small, non-demanding utility systems, such as those found in backround music, car audio, etc. and did much to promote the sonic virtues of his brand, by selling packages. Most packaged systems at the time sounded worse. Its not really serious audio, although you can spend a bundle on it; He filed a suit against Consumer's Union years ago for a bad review. He has become a household name in a way that one of his other contemporaries, Henry Kloss, hasn't quite achieved. He did recognize the importance of psycho-acoustics at a time when mass market hi-fi was still confined to prosaic boxes. He has also made a very large pile of money. I'm not even sure if he is still alive, but would suspect that he is pretty elderly by now...NB. One web site claimed he was 68, as of 1999, so he's not as old as i thought.

For home audio you're paying for their advertising, not quality.

In terms of car audio or home audio?

I have a Bose in my 300ZX and after having it serviced once, it actually functions quite nicely. It's no Alpine/Sony/etc... but it does better than many stock systems I've heard.

In terms of home audio, I have the Acoustic Wave system that I use in the garage or whenever I'm out somewhere and it is awesome!

No highs, no lows...must be BOSE!

Came as OE on my Acura, sounds fine, but definately overhyped. Better than 95% of the systems that come as stock, but easily beat by aftermarket components

overhyped crap for the money... There's nothing special about them other than those tiny cube speakers they developed, and sleak ala Bang Olufsen wannabe deesign stereo systems... So is the Harmon Kardon system you find optional on some cars like the BMW... That sh8t is even worse..
