Speaking of which, have you seen the Ventura V-matic Logo (I think that's the one). Very nearly bought one, just love the design. It was featured in a watch magazine article about auto industry instrument clusters being insprired by watch/chrono designs.

Breitling Navitimer.
Classic, functional.
The ultimate watch I always wanted.
I smile because it's the only time I still use my slide rule/E6B whizwheel skills.

All the young F-16 guys I know have a Breitling Aerospace, but us older guys......

I tried that on for fun at Tourneau and it swallowed my wrist - looked like a wall clock on a toothpick! Still, a beautiful watch :-)

I also tried on the IWC Pilot and Portugese - love them both, especially the Portugese, but same problem for me...

Dan,

Yes, at 2-3/32" it is the biggest case around. It took some time to get used to it.

Scott,

I got my uncle the Portuguese Automatic 2000 as a gift. The power reserve on that thing is AMAZING! A full week! He hasn't tried to see how long it would last, though. It's stunningly beautiful in simplicity.

I have a nice $10 (canadian dollars, so like $2 US) Yukon watch which I wear almost 24/7

add 5 bucks to get some links taken out, 5 bucks to replace the battery, so $20 total

then for special occasions, i.e. formal occasions, I have a nice knockoff Calvin Klein watch from China, for, amazingly, 10 bucks :-)

And did I understand correctly, some watches go for 1,000,000+?????!!!!!

Casio Divers MTD-1010
(resembles the Submariner)
This is my working on car watch, or whatever else that involves hands on.

Rolex GMT Master II (burg/blk)Stainless
I like the large diving style watches, the jewelry associate quickly changed my mind when showing me the features on the GMT series. I bought it a few years ago and the thing is a flawless time keeping instrument. I trust no other time peice. A while back I did some traveling with my former company and changing the time was easy as pulling the crown out to its middle position(3 position crown adjust)and moving the hour hand to the correct time zone. The 24 hour hand always kept my home state of California time. Its really slick!

I also own a high end faux stainless Rolex Daytona which fooled my Rolex jeweler until he started examining it a little more closer. I'd like to get the gold one for the complete heck of it(faux) but you know the faux underground can be, here today, gone tomarro. Anybody know where I could get one?

Jeff, you are one lucky SOB to have a stainless Daytona...I have been dying for one and haven't been willing to pay 2x retail on ebay for one. I thought I was getting one for a law school grad gift, but the 'rents never got on the wait list when I asked (back before I started law school).

As for me, I started with a Tag 6000 automatic (blue face) for college grad. For law school, I got a ss datejust with the jubilee bracelet, ivory arab face and fluted 18k wg bezel...I think it's a pretty understated piece that goes with just about anything (and you don't see that ivory arab face too often).

Next up is an IWC Portugeiser. Anyone wishing to donate upwards of $5800??? After that, who knows (maybe a Daytona, but I am really getting into the Muller Conquistador)

I started with a Tag, next got the TTSub blue dial,SS Sub, Explorer II white dial, SS Daytona white dial, Day Date white dial roman numerals day in German language, Yachtmaster, Breitling Emergency . I like big watches (I'm a big boy 235lbs )puny watches look stupid on me. Found that out when I got the Patek's. Plus I don't own a pair of long pants those watches look really stupid with board shorts .Now that I'm kicking back I could care less what time it is. Threw them in a old Nike shoebox that's sitting in one of my gun safes. My wife bugs me about that from time to time . Reminding me that I have that kind of money tied up in watches and when we are out I always ask her what time it is. She keeps reminding me that the cell phone has the time on it. The only purpose I can see to a high end watch is that sales clerks will kiss your rear if they spot one and have any watch savy. Thankfully I haven't lost any money if I wanted to dump them. In fact a few can make me a damn good profit if I decide to sell. I'm going to give my sons the Explorer II and the SS Sub when they turn 13 if they want them.

Here's a funny story that happened to me a few years back at the Rolex service center in Beverly Hills. It's located in a converted bank or something. Cruised in after surfing that morning. Two people waiting at the counter dressed in suits one male one female. I walked up between them and asked about a general cleaning wasn't wearing a watch just slaps, board shorts , H&K t-shirt ( German gun manf.). Old lady clerk looked me up and down and asked me which watch I had. I started pulling out watches from my pockets when I got to the Day Date I asked her to make sure they cleaned that one extra special cause the guy put up quite a fight and there was some blood on it. She freaked out on me till she ran the serial #'s and saw I had brought them in before and I was indeed the owner. Told her next time to pull the stick out of her rear and not to judge a book by it 's cover. My surfing buddy that came with me that day still cracks up over that.

I completely forgot, I also have a black Panerai with the burnt orange leather straps and LOVE it. It's the step down from the massive 44mm size and looks better on my wrist. I also have a great rep of the Chopard Mille Miglia and get compliments on it all the time.

DES, I used to feel the way you did about Rolex's, but somehow that changed. Now I think their bulky nature looks really masculine. I shy away from the gold except for one of my Daytonas which has the gold bezel, white face and alligator straps. This is probably my favorite and I only wear it on special occasions. It's funny to watch it draw people's eyes when your talking to them...you see them keep taking sidelong glances.

Ron - couldn't agree more, but my father passed both of these obsessions (cars/watches) on to me, so we're likely in the minority. My father always inculcated that watches and cars were art - masterworks of design and aesthetics as well as function. Gee, wonder how I ended up obsessed with Ferrari's?

Taek it is considered by watch critics the only italian made watch of today that can give the swiss a run for their money. I never said best ever, but best italian watch. Also it is less money then most of its competitors. Why not have an italian watch to go with the car?

Oh, OK.

Panerais are not considered the best watch ever made. There are many in line for that honor. It depends on what kind of watch you are matching up with though.

Has anyone seen Ulysse Nardin's Freak? Now THAT is a watch my friends. :-)

Those Pateks aren't bad eh? The seven figure watches are not wrist watches. They are limited edition pocket watches. It is currently the watch with the most complications. Patek also holds the honors for the most complicated wrist watch (an honor IWC used to have), and also the longest power reserve (10 days). They have so many accolades it's nauseating.

Breitling oozes timeless class though. The marine watches are fantastic in both function and aesthetics.

THE cool new movement is Chopard's LUC. Anyone seen one of these suckers? Purdy cool indeedy!

Rob, did you buy your Movado from www.time4jewels.com in Plano Texas who's name I posted a couple of months ago? If so, he's a great guy. I bought mine from him....well actually traded a power washer for it and I love it. I saw it in a local jewelry store for $895.00 and I think his price is about half.
Cheers!

Taek not the huge watch, but the fact it is made in italy and considered the best watch ever made there. Which is what I think Ferrari's are the best car made there. My mistake:-). The size has nothing to do with it, but the watch really looks classy.

The perfect watch for any f-car fan would have to be the Panerai which is the watch of the italian army. They are also huge. The best one IMO is the luminor marina which measures 44mm. It also looks like a hockey puck black with white numbers. Also the watch isn't bad at around $3700. Anyone else have an opinion on this watch?

If you are looking for techy then get the Breitling with the emergency tracker beacon. A pilot friend was showing me his. It is available for the average Joe now. You have to sign an agreement only to use it in case of emergency.

I personally don't do "cloned" copies. Just collect, trade etc. Just traded several vintage 30s watches for a Hamilton Ventura.

Okay watch collecting is pretty much as addictive as car collecting. In the case of watches you can't just have a 100...

I alternate between a Tag Kirium Chrono and an Omega Speedmaster. I love them both but the Omega drives me nuts because it's automatic and if I don't wear it over the weekend, it dies and I have to reset it. The Tag is probably my favorite. It's the most versatile watch I've ever owned.

I also like the $5 watch I bought last weekend at Wal Mart. The whole face lights up behind the hands!

i've got a Peugot at home, that i bought from Macy's... One tiny section of the wrist band (metal) kept turning my wrist green; brought it back, told them i wanted another... Got another; the same exact section kept doing the same exact thing... Gorgeous watch - at least in my opinion - but because it's defective, i only wear it a few times a year...

Pulsar, two tone gold and white gold plated watch; not Movado thin, but closer than any of my other watches... Has the clasp replaced; and now it needs to be replaced again; both times it was my fault, though; i sit there and play with it, non-stop, all day...

Got a Klaus Kobec through The duPont Registry for $200 - supposedly $600 less than what they usually cost... Waited for it to be shipped; it finally came in a nice wooden box, yadda yadda yadda - i take it out and the head is HUGE...! Holy crap, i wanted a wrist watch, not some high school lunch room clock with a wrist band...! It's a gorgeous watch, still, too big for my tastes...

i buy watches 'cause they look nice and couldn't care about the brand name; as long as they don't fall apart in two weeks.

However; the watch i've always dreamed of is the watch my father came home wearing, one day, when i was a little kid... His bosses wife owned a jewelry store, so he got his Movado for 80% off... It's the really, really thin one with the "diamond" were the '12' would be; no numbers, just an hour and a minute hand; black leather band - gorgeous...! i've always wanted that one and now i see Movado makes them with metal bands (which i prefer) so hopefully one day i'll get one...

As for now, i've stopped wearing watches altogether... i usually don't care what time it is and eagely await the day i no longer need to know the time...

Rolexes, Tags, et al always seem bulky to me and i can't imagine i've ever buy one... Rolexes especially (at least most of them) look gaudy... i'd prefer something sophisticatedly simple as opposed to ostentatiously attention-grabbing... Just my two lincolns...

I LOVE watches and cars - they just seem to go together. I love a nice timepiece strapped to my wrist, especially chronographs and will inherit some really nice pieces from my father someday. Til then I have a collection of 20+ that are mostly high-end replicas (the italian and some japanese versions that come with the swiss tags, boxes, and all paperwork). I've got submariners, daytonas, A. Lange & Sohn, Breguet, Omega Speedmaster, GP Ferrari chronos, Heuer Monaco, Brietlings, and many more. I could've bought a small number of originals, but given my love of watches, I opted for a bigger collection instead.

For the style RADO all the way. Titanium Composite with Sapphire Crystal.. Nicer design side by side with a Movado.

For more of a casual watch I like Raymond Wiel. I also rather enjoy my 30s Baume et Mercier.

Depends on what you are looking for. For a very very.. nice dress watch Patek Phillippe.

Tags are okay but a little heavy. I rarely wear my F1.

Now if you are looking for a really cool conversation piece take a look @ a late 50s Hamilton Ventura.

Depends on what you are looking for.

$40k doesnt sound so bad, considering, Pre-owned Tourbillon movement watches are actually known to appreciate over time because they are so rare.. Yes, you can probably get it cheaper from an estate sale, but if you do not buy it from a reputable dealer, you do not know who tinkered with the watches when they were serviced... It may contain un-original replacement parts installed because it is cheaper..

But I'm more modest than that,,, I been happy with my Omega Speedmaster schumacher edition watch I had for 5 years..

I would say TAG-Heuer. I had it since high school until it was stolen from fitness club locker. I had it about 13 years. Worked like a champ & never had any problems with it. I've never had a watch better than that one. My current watch is a MOMO titanium / carbon fiber speed edition. It looks nice but I've been having problems with the chronograph & battery. Not the best investment I must say.

Who pays 40K???? Certainly not me! They make cheaper watches, you know, and it is also smart to buy from estate sales & pre-owned... That's what I do!

I also have 2 Girard-Perregaux stainless Ferrari watches, one with a leather band (very nice) and 2 Rolexes given to me by my former CEO in a past life for performance: a stainless/gold Submariner, and a 18k President with white face & roman numerals.

40k for a watch? Jeez some of you guys really must have too much money on your hands. Wouldn't you rather have a 348?

Hands down has to be Breguet... Sophisticated, extremely rare, distinguished history, and classy

Movado or a Raymond Wiel (sp?)....Classy, sophisticated and understated. I like Tag Hauer but a bit bulky.......and Rolex is too much of a cliche.

Just MHO........ :-)
