going with Martin on this one, somebody probably has an unairworthy 727 and they are switching the parts over as we speak, next to the 707 the 27's are one of the most dependable commercial aircraft ever built, damn things are built like tanks, if youve got the parts to keep them going the airframes go on almost indefinetly

If they can loose a plane, now I don't feel so bad if I missplace my keys.

It is standing in some bush runway and being dismanled probably.

Sean,

Thanks. I realize there isn't a world order of airline authority (or is there?), and so the option to turn it off is probably a given. Seems self-defeating, as far as the funtionality of the box, though.

Also, if it was a privately owned aircraft based in Africa it probably also has a missile warning system on board. Very common for privately owned jet aircraft and expensive piston twins in Africa since shoulder launched anti-aircraft weapons are very common.

There's not exactly a lot of radar stations all over Africa.

Dan, all planes have an IFF transponder that can be switched off or on. It is an electronic box that sends out an identification signal while in flight. I'm sure this one's was turned off when it left the airport.

A 727 does not exactly
have the latest RAM on
board. "radar absorbing
material" ie... Stealth.

Smuggling operation ?

" The privately owned Boeing 727 did not have a flight plan or tell the control tower its final destination, said the official, who asked not to be identified."

I'm certain that it was plained, who knows if will be converted to a flying bomb of mass destruction. Damn, I sometimes hate these modern times we live in.

I'm completely uneducated about this, but aren't there tracking systems on larger planes like this? Or radar 'logs' or something?

Well, If it is used for an attack, I highly doubt it will be on the US --my guess is the middle east somewhere or Europe. The 727 just couldnt get from Africa or Europe to the US --especially without being noticed.

I sure hope they find it soon before they crash that thing into some religious site in Israel or major european city.

Sounds extemely odd to me because a 727 is a big bird.
