I have one Rat Terrier. His name is Shadow, and he weighs about 25lbs.

When he was a puppy, he would bite my ears when I would lay down on the couch to watch TV, but he doesn't do that anymore. He also howls a lot when I leave. He is territorial, so he barks at everything that passes in front of the house, and barks wildly at the Westie that lives across the street. He's gained some weight since we had him neutered, but not much.

His nickname was "The Urinator" when he was a puppy. We don't call him that anymore, since he no longer 'marks his territory' on the couch, carpet, walls, and air conditioner intake vents (I think he knows what the intake vent does and what would happen if he peed directly into it), but now he walks up to me and stares at me, pawing my knee and whimpering a little till I let him outside.

I've had him since he was 6 weeks old and I love this dog. I bought him from an older couple who had bred their rat terriers and were selling the puppies. He recently turned six years old.

I forgot to mention that he can junp very high, about three feet in the air, probably higher.

Miniature Schnauzer. Got her from the humane society. Someone had abandoned her and the rest of the litter along with the mother. She appeared to be about 8 wks old when we got her. Now I wish we had gotten another of the pups to go with her. Have had her for four years now.

Schnauzers are great rat and mouse killers. When we first moved into our current home three years ago, we found out there was a rat nest somewhere along the back fence under some heavy underbrush. How did we know??? Grace (her name, but not Mercy) brought us eight dead rats over the first three days we were there. Chased one into the pool and would not let it out. It finally drowned. Have no rat problems now. Have only seen one in the past three years since she did her "ethnic cleansing". I heard that Schnauzers were originally trained for rat hunting in Europe. They are excellent.

PeterS,

I would recommend a Pug as a great compromise. In my opinion, they have the best characteristics of both worlds:
- Small but beefy and muscular.
- Cute yet mean looking.
- Cudly at times, but mostly playful.
- Enjoy the outdoors but like being inside.
- Don't bark (but snort like pigs!)

I was pleased to see that none of the posts sported and of the fluffy little rat-lap dogs! My girlfriend wants one of these small things while I want a black lab. A friend of mine has (from his new wife) two of those little lap dogs, you know, the ones that have to have the pink bow on their heads. Its a shame when she is gone for a few days because HE has to walk them around! Great to see real dogs on the posts! You guys have some taste!..Ps. Since I threatened Tony, its been a nice weekend without his posts!

I have a German Shepard, and really only because she came at the right time. I got her form a family that couldn't take her of her anymore, though they were doing a fantastic job.

She is awesome, well tempered, but protects my house and truck like she means it. And she does. But on the other hand once you're inside she's social (sometimes a bit shy) and likes it when other dogs come over to play.

I take her to work everyday, and that really helps with this breed. They need to spend a lot of time with their master and be mentally stimulated to remain healthy and composed. Sometimes I think she's smarter than me.

Vincent.

Our puppies all nipped at our fingers. With their needle like puppy teeth, it was very unpleasant. What I did was coat my hands with Tobasco Sauce and let her have a nibble. Two doses worked on our first dog but the second dog was a little more hard headed. She's 8 months old and doesn't nip fingers/hands anymore.

We have never had a problem with dogs chewing inanimate objects. We get them lots of toys and spend a lot of time playing with them. My wife is a stay at home wife so she had the time. I would spend a lot of time in evenings.

We are seriously thinking about getting our pet a sister or brother.

Ronald,

It's a puppy thing especially with small breeds. Make sure you have plenty of dog toys. Also make sure you puppy proof a room for him.

When ours were young they chewed on walls, window ledges etc. Our painter fixed it all once they were old enough to stop chewing.

3 sussex spaniels. 1 from England. 1 from here. The third was my pick of the litter from their breeding.

We wanted a new dog after our 11 yr old cocker had to be put to sleep. It came down to the clumber spaniel, the german wirehaird pointing griffon, or the sussex. All three are pretty rare, the latter both being excellent gun dogs. There are only about 400 or so Sussex Spaniels in this country...we were able to find one in England...the rest is history.

2 dogo argentinos. Specifically bred from 10 different types of dogs in the early 1900's in Argentina. I have them as family pets as well as for security. http://dogo.org "Coat of satin, body of steel, heart of gold" ( at least that's how one site describes them).

We have several animals. First we got a maile Siamese cat. He was very aloof and we spoilt him silly. He loves to cuddle up in your lap, and if you get up and disturb him, he gets very annoyed!

Next animal in the house was a sheltie. Wanted a collie, but figured that the smaller sized sheltie would be easier to care for. Have since discovered to our wonderment how incredibly gentle, sweet, and intelligent this breed is.

Then we got a Samoyed to keep the sheltie company. She was trembling with fear when we picked her up. But when we got home, she saw the sheltie, leaped out of my arms, and her tail didn't stop wagging. The sheltie didn't stop licking her for two days. Now, if they are separated, the one left behind sits by the window till the other one returns. Samoyed's a bit dorky, but super-friendly. And she loves to howl!

It's been one big happy family for 12+ years. If we had a bigger house, we'd have more. Our dream is to get a farm so we can have some shetland ponies and llamas as well.

Pets are fantastic!

Boxer and a Dalmatian. The Dalmatian is a bit neurotic but the Boxer is an absolute joy. He is friendly towards everyone young or old and he makes me laugh all day long. I've never heard a bad thing about the boxers. They really are terrific dogs.

It's funny about the two dogs. We were hesitant to get a second, since the one we have seems to enjoy 100% attention, sort of like an only child. But we kept thinking about it, and the more people we spoke with, the more we heard exactly the same thing. They would never NOT have two dogs again. My wife stays home all day, so the dog doesn't get too bored, but I like the idea of Senna having a pal.

I completely agree...the difference is noticable. On the food issues, yes it's important to research the different brands and what they use. All dog foods are not created equal.

It seems most dog foods are mostly some type of grain... uh... ain't dogs carnivores? :-)

I found two really good books on dogs both by Stanley Coren:
The Intelligence of Dogs and How to Speak Dog

I gave my Sheperd the intelligence test out of the one book and she scored very high... probably better then I would have. :-) The American Eskimo did not do so well. Oh well she makes up for it in looks.

I grew up with a German Shepard, loved the dog but just not cuddly like the Shih Tzu.

The Shih Tzu just basically never grow up. It doesn't make any difference on the age, they still want to run, play and yes okay destroy...

Two English Mastiffs. What they have in size, they lack in intelligence. Very gentle with children, as extensively tested by my daughter. Prone to drooling.

Also have a Jack Russell, mean little beast.

We feed our dog raw food one meal a day, and Solid Gold the others. Solid Gold only uses about 5-6 ingredients, plus a small bit of supplements to enhance the digestion. At first I thought my wife was being a little obsessive, but after reading info like that, it's amazing what some people let their dogs eat.

We have a 2 year-old Golden Retriever (see profile), and are getting another in August. Awesome dogs.

Tillman, you're so right. I remember how neurotic we were when we first got "Senna", even taking her to the vet one evening in a panic to have someone look at a bump on her belly that turned out to be a puppy zit. Well, we felt a little stupid, but I never knew puppies get zits!

Any of you do research on dog food or supplements? We uncovered a lot of interesting info about the differences, and a lot of brands have a lot of crap in them.

Bruce, what color is yours? Our first was white and was with us for almost 16 years. She weighed about 28 pounds. Missy is sort of chestnut with a white blaze on her chest. She has white feet and white on top of her snout. Missy is smaller and weighs about 17 pounds. Wonderful dogs.

Cocker Spaniel -- rescued from a owner who "couldn't handle" the dog's behaviour. Nothing decent treatment didn't cure.

Rat Terrier -- rescued from a college acquaintance that kept the dog caged up 23 hours a day. He's a real hoot, and keeps the Cocker entertained.

It's likely that we're going to end up with another Cocker. I'm paying for surgery on the dog to clean out badly infected ears and gums, because the owner kept her outside all the time with no attention.

I have no respect for people who won't help their pets because "it's too expensive". Pets are like kids -- if you can't afford them, and don't want to do the work to keep them healthy, then don't have them.
