For those who still have their old school book reports:
Catcher in the Sky. Or, if the RC air part will be used to harass perps, rather than just observe:

Fisal, As is ' He's an Arse'? The airship would be too slow. A gas plane can cover a great distance and sneak up on people. Ones firsth thought is 'Hey, I hear a chainsaw! Here's some intersting stuff! I have been talking to the Director of Development, a Col. at the Marine Warfighting Lab in Quantico,VA regarding the R/C spy plane, the Dragon Eye. This is the most advanced syatem out there. The Marines seem to be ahead of the rest of the forces. This plane is laptop/GPS controlled. The design was done by L3 Communications in S. CA. and is currently out to bid to two vendors. What we saw in the Iraq war was the 'Pointer', a plane that was developed by the Army. This uses an uplink radio for the controls. The Navy has their 'Silver Fox'. This plane uses a conventional R/C TX box...I guess the Navy can be behind the technology a bit because they probably have the fastest planes! |

Also, Peter, if it is to be deployed over the same secured property/perimeter, wouldn't one or several tethered hot-air ballons/dirigible type of craft be better? Silent, unlimited hang time, etc.? It could have a solar-charged battery to power the steering props? |

Tim..Not entirely correct. In Reno, RC planes are used to keep the geese off the runway and out of the flight path for planes on short finals and takeoffs. GE jet engines don't do well with a 20 pound bird sucked in the intakes, especially on takeoff! Such an event could ruin one's entire day. |

I dont know if an airport is going to wnt small planes buzzing around in its airspace. Those things are affected majorly by wind (a buddy of mine flies them) and i dont think a jet engine would do too well after an RC plane ingestion. |

I may have come across wrong. Computer monitoring software is usually promoted for keeping an eye on your kids, to make sure they're not up to no good. But in reality it's used for spying on spouses, acquiring passwords and reading personal stuff. So while the plane is proted for security, I was just wondering what alternative uses there would be. How loud is the plane motor? Most of the gas ones I've heard buzz pretty loud. |

Ben..Great info and suggestions. The GPS is a great idea, but I need to keep the cost for the assembled package around $995. I should have the camera in by Monday and it is ready to be mounted on my plane. At $1295, It will have a 6" TV monitor that will be available that plugs into a cars cig lighter. I see you are in Healdsburg, CA. I get up to Petaluma about twice a month. Maybe we can meet in Santa Rosa for a quick lunch...BTW, Nightfly is a great idea, but the plane can only be flown in daylight hours. Also, I thought about its use in the vinyards and ranches in the Napa area. Another application would be on slope gliders that can be motor launched to scout out downed planes on hillsides in the event a chopper is not available on an ASAP basis. |

"DragonFly", "FireSpy", or 80s style "NightRanger" (heh.) A "swarm" of DragonFlys has a nice ring to it (and a nice volume for you! Peter- one of my clients is a company called L3 Wescam (www.wescam.com) If you're familiar with the Predator UAV, they make their camera systems. My specality is digital systems and next generation video transmission/storage/targeting. There is much in guidance for RC and missile systems in convergance, you could command these planes to fly patterns autonomonisly via a simple dGPS and INS combo. Shoot me an email sometime |

Hi all... My company, Performance Devices Inc. is in the final stages of development of a gas powered, remote controlled surveillance airplane that will be marketed as an extension of security services for sites such as airports, sensitive and secured government sites, etc. With a 1500' range (which is in the general visual site of the operator), these planes will be able to perform perimeter field surveillance providing a direct and live digital video feed that can be viewed live and/or recorded. The 'pool' of available individuals to operate these planes is great due to the fact that in every major community, there are local flying clubs in abundance. In parallel to the above, Performance Devices is in the process of providing the Marine Corps Warfighting Lab in Quantico,VA with the only Military Approved radio RC crystals available. The initial target for our product to this facility is for use in the 'Dragon Eye' RC plane that was used in forward surveillance in the Iraq war. At this time, a name for the plane needs to be developed. I am hopeful that you will please think of a name or two (for the plane) and please reply back to me. |
