Interesting in that statistic is that the 1995 F355s are stolen more than a 1997. I tried to get a quote for my F355B 1995 and the rate was very high compared to the F355 Spider, 1998 I had, which was 35% less. Now I know, because these idiots look for the year and make and model not the model itself. Why steal a 1995 if you can have a 1997??? Unless the owners of the 1995s get so pissed that the loss in vlaue is so bad that they "have them stolen". Of the valve guide repair would be too high.

Some of these cars are being recovered. The rate of recovery is actually pretty good for high end exotics like an F40 or the older vintage cars. It can take years though. I talked to an insurance investigator I met at Cavallino Classic this year and he told me it sometimes takes decades till the car is recovered but they usually get them. They will in some cases steel them right back if they encounter them in a country that has "unusual" laws for theft recovery on cars. They take the car from the individual and drive it into a secure location and ship it out to a country that is friendly and officially recover it there.

I wonder what the market is for stolen F-cars as the community keeps such good track of them... Are they being butchered for parts? I know of a practise where guys buy a wrecked car that still has the registration papers, then steal one exactly like it (same color, year etc), exchange S/N with the wrecked one and sell it on. I don't see that happen with a F-car. So where do they go? People that KNOW they are buying a stolen car? Jack |

Faisal , one of the F40 belonged to a TV celeb here . It was stolen at his home in the south of France . Never recovered ! The other belonged to a very nice parisian owner , his F40 was parked in a exotic only garage , and was stolen with 4 other exotics ( Astons and other F cars ) . It was all planned as they didnt touch any other car ! Still not recovered as of today , it happened earlier this year , now he bought an F40 with LM specs

This reminds me of the time when Gerhard Berger, who was driving for Ferrari at the time, had his F40 stolen. Apparently he had left it outside a hotel in Rome, with the engine running, while he went inside. When asked how long he had left the car, he thought that it had been about 20 minutes ! While I don't condone theft, the temptation must have been enormous ! Ron |

Andrew, yikes! Were any of them recovered. What were the circumstances around the F40 thefts? Taken from garages, transporters, or off the street? I remember reading about the F50. -f |

Good to see all the zeroes. Surprised at the 94 512s...why is that so popular? |

Insurance rates seem to indicate not. I know that there have been some high-profile cases, but I was thinking more along the lines of 308s, 328s, 348s, 355s, 360s, 455s, 550s, 575s, Testarossas, 512Ms, 512BBs, etc. And any ideas as to what happens to them? Is there such a demand for them in the South American/Middle Eastern/African countries where stolen cars usually end up? Or do they mostly get chopped? Joyriders? Any recovery experts/auto-theft detectives out there? |
