I must admit that Dave Goldmans Omega is beautiful, I bouht two years ago this month a Tag Link auto chrono black face, it has started to loose a few minutes a month, guess it needs service but do not want to send it off without something to wear. Thinking of Seadweller but don't really want to shell out the bucks for it. Also considering a Mavado, any suggestions

Jeffrey, I have an Omega Speedmaster and a Tag Kirium Chrono. I actually prefer the Tag because it's more versatile (I boat/beach/pool a lot), but I wear the Omega more because it's automatic and if you don't wear it, it dies. Drives me nuts.

I have an Omega Seamaster with the blue dial and the blue face. I have had this watch for the past 4 years and I never atke it off. I even bathe with it. I am going to let my 9 1/2 month old son have this watch for his high school graduation gift. I am also looking at the IWC Portugeese (sp. I went to Jamaica last year and had a deal on one, but didn't have the money at the time. The retail price was $12,500 but he offered to give me an Omega Constellation with diamond bezel and a watch winder with the IWC for only $7,500. Next time, I will have the money for sure, don't see many deals like that floating around. :-)

I Love watches, pens, and cars.

I have a IWC gold wristwatch with papers and documentation that shows it was originally sold in Zurick in 1949. I also own a Patek Annual Calendar in wt gold and my daily watch is a steel and gold Omega Speedmaster. I would like to get a Rolex Daytona (the only Rolex worth owning), but I need more money :-)

Wow thats a hell of a collection Adrian! I would love to have a nice watch collection like that but not enough funds, ahhh maybe someday.

Right now I have a TAG Chrono that I've had for about 5 years.

Did someone mention pens? I have like three Mount Blanc's that I love but really never get a chance to use considering everything is e-mail or MS Word. I guess it's for the better my penminship is horrific!

Art -

That Omega is a classic beauty. If I had the $2400 bux required to buy one, I'd do it! I even like the fact that it needs winding every day.

I'm jealous, if you didn't notice.

I am torn between a TAG and the Omega. I will admit that in the first 40 years I have not been much of a jewerly junkie. But my wife thinks I need a good watch to replace the crap I usually wear. At this point I have Two Movados... A sport and a Sapphire. Seems fine to me but she disagrees. Which do you guys like better.. the TAG or the Omega?

Art Chambers, I have the same Omega, got it in about 64 I think, still keeps good time if you wind it every day. I also have a President, which I hardly ever wear anymore (It's a to set the date) Have had several Porsche watches, (the originals), then a Girrard Pereguax titanium Ferrari (great watch) Now wearing a black plastic Swatch I got to go snorkeling in Playacar.

Got a small wrist (relatively), don't like the big Panerai's so I usually wear a Rolex SS Date or SS Blancpain Flyback for work and most other times Casio digi. Date with the wife, Patek or the Vacheron. How often? buy sell trade one once a year or so, but rarely (can't remember the last time) do I ever buy new. Lots of watches that are in great shape on the pre-owned market.

The Don, damn that bites. When my four year old was two I had just had my Day Date serviced. They had it for their usual 5 weeks. Picked it up and went home took it off and placed it on a shelf in my study. I took a phone call and carried my son as I spoke.Without paying attention I must have gotten near the book case ,he grabbed the watch and out of the corner of my eye saw the watch fly across the room, good arm on him. Watch landed face down ( slate floor). Didn't pick it up for a half hour. Found out right there that I could never strike my child in anger. Picked up the pieces (crystal shattered) drove back to the service center and told them to call me when it was fixed again.

Adrian,

Unfortunately, you can tell by my high post count, that I don't have a life at all. I spend my days rotting in front of my computer because I've been stripped of Italian machinery in my garage.

I have started a whole bunch of companies and it is becoming a full time job managing them even with management in place. So, since I receive around 400 emails a day which are related to issues at work, I spend my days developing an advanced form of carpal tunnel syndrome and advanced arthritis.

Can't wait for the day I centralize redundant management and have some sort of holding company run the other companies. Or something... Then I'll truly be free to be as worthless as I please.

Cheers

Adrian,

I think you just schooled just about everyone here! WOW! Great collection.

The only watch worth anything near a Breguet Tourbillon belongs to my wife. A gift from my father. Come to think of it, it's not near that price either (it's a lot higher...hehehe...had to brag about that one). A jewelled Piaget manual wind watch that used to belong to my mother who entrusted it to her before she passed away.

Peter, actually I'm a little embarassed over my addictive/compulsive/obsessive personality. On the onee hand it has made me a lot of money and on the other, I go crazy when I latch on to something. As you can see!
I have actually started to sell off some of the watches. Mostly because I don't wear them these days. I will probably only keep the high complications. Will post pics if I ever can drag myself to the safety deposit boxes.

Peters,

will take a better photo tomorrow,

hardly ever wear the Patek as it was left to me by my grandfather, its really slim and very comfortable (compared to Tag and Acurist) the only problem I have with it is that financialy and emotionaly it's just too much to use everyday (especialy as I lost the mont blanc pen..), have even been looking for a replica that I could wear, so far have only seen gucci's and cartier tank's, apart from that the dunhill's at $1000 are way too much to spend on a watch that's just going to get scratched and covered in s**t........maybe its just an English thing but I don't want to wear a watch that cost as much as a car!, do Tag's and Rolex's cost that much over their?

Taek- I agree with you. I think the Omega is underated too. I chose the Speedmaster automatic over a Submariner as my first "nice" watch because I've always thought of Rolex's as slightly pretentious. I've since rethought my position hence my lust for the Daytona. I still don't think I could go for a 18K/diamond encrusted watch though. I'll remain partial to automatic chronograph's! Now let's see some pics of these watches. I'll post mine tomorrow when I locate my "misplaced" camera.

Another thread of sickness!!! I started collecting watches 8 years ago, starting with a vintage Patek dresswatch. Manual movement with minute and second hand. The band is integrated into the case, and the band is chain-style. Gave it to my best friend and mentor a few years ago for his birthday.
From that watch on, it's been a real sickness. If the following makes you sick, or if you think it's bragging, please do not read. Not meant to come across as anything but sharing.
Patek 3940 Perpetual, Patek 3970E ,Calatrava
Audemar Piguet Limited Edition Tourbillon Skeleton with visible hammer
Breguet Tourbillon
IWC Portugueser and Split second
Vacheron Constantin 1970
Concord Impressario Chronograph with Zenith movement
Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso Duo, Tourbillon, Minute Repeater, Atmos Clock (my fav)
IWC DaVinci tourbillon
Ulysse Nardin Planetarium
Cartier single button Chrono, Pasha etc
A bunch of Rolex' inc my father's gold GMT
Too many Swatches to remember

...all in the bank vault!!! Had to keep them all away because it was getting too addictive, you think?

Anyone collect pens?

I've got an Omega that I've had since the middle 60s. It's the watch they took to the moon, but mine was built before they did, and I don't have the engraving on the back. I've also got a rolex, Datejust.

I usually wear the Rolex because it keeps good time and I don't have the auto winder, and if I don't wear it, I have to reset it, except when I'm in trial, then I usually get a $10 watch to wear, don't want the juries thinking I'm rich and flashy.

Nebula,

The face is blue and the bezel is a polished steel color. I was thinking of going with the traditional blue colored bezel but realized they scratched too much once they age. I think watches should be kept for a long time. My ex-roommate has a Rolex that has been handed down something like two generations! Anyway, the steel bezel can be polished off. The numbers on the bezel are indented of course and are of a dark blue to match the face. I think Omegas are underrated. I've always wanted one and it was a pleasant surprise when my wife presented it to me.

I am looking for a Rolex Sea Dweller or a A Lange and Shoen Lange 1.

Get over it. I don't see anything wrong with what he's said....only with what you've said. Get that damn chip off your shoulder....your back will feel much better once you do.

Back to watches:

Taek - I LOVE the Seamaster Chrono. I wanted one a few years back, but they are a bit to pricey for a college student on the Montgomer GI bill. But that is a beautiful watch. Do you have the white or blue dial?

And does anyone have an Omega GMT? I should pick mine up in a month or so, but I have not yet decided on a white or black dial. Any suggestions?

Kendall,

Only recently did I come to appreciate the same, in a different context. Spent a month away from everything. No cell phone, rarely checked email due to lack of connectivity - just hanging out with family.

Coming back, the damn thing was backlogged for a month of messages and whatnot, and the phone was ringing incessantly. You come to appreciate not having any accountability. :-)

Scott,

There are about 100 Brooklands R Mulliner models. Great cars.

Sunny,

I'm not so sure about that XJ6 comparison. I've driven the modern ones and I think a properly sorted R could probably take it. Bentley are torque monsters.

WHart and Omar,

The S3 is comparable to the Silver Cloud III. I agree with you on the new stuff. Just not the same unless you get something like a Continental R Mulliner car. Or an Azure, love the convertible. My inlaws have recently gotten an Arnage Red Label and an Arnage R. They love the cars. My dad though, believes Bentley died in the 40s, soon after Rolls took it over. He still loves the marque because of what it means to him. He drives a Continental R Mulliner almost as a daily driver. The cars are very well put together. They tear down forests and strip farms full of cattle to make these things. Very comfortable.

Lou,

The new Rolls? Add me to the peanut gallery. Don't like it at all.

Cheers "

Chris,

The business is largely out of Asia, and I'd be lying if I said my old man doesn't have a lot of pull in most of those countries. He helped me out a lot from that front, but that is just facilitating the process and getting people to listen to me. Things take hours instead of days, etc. This is more of a problem in Asia than it is here. The business culture there is very very very different than it is in the U.S. It's hard for a group of fifty year olds sit and take orders from a 27 year old (any people who have done business in Asia will back me on this).

Nevertheless, the business could have still succeeded without his help. It just expedited things.

3k was used entirely for freight and taxes on the first shipment.

Back to watches, I think not having to wear one is the greatest luxury of all... Wearing one to me implies, being rushed, stressed, and being somewhere based on someone else's agenda or schedule...

I have an Omega Speedmaster Schumacher Edition (the red one) but I rarely if ever wear it...

Not that a watch ranks terribly high on my list,,, but I have to agree with Scott,,, I'd want the IWC Portegueser with a white dial...

Having met him a few times, I can vouch that Taek is a class act. And having grown up in the kind of situations you describe, I find no correlation to wealth and snobbery. There are just as many resentful, distasteful individuals in any socioeconomic category.

And again I have to agree with Taek when it comes to indulging with children. Making them work for the proverbial hard earned buck through manual labor isn't the only way to teach them certain values. If you think so, then you need to re-assess your own parenting skills and ideologies.

With respect to watches: buy them as you see fit. They're like cars, too many to buy, and not nearly enough money for them all. Some of the complications today are absolutely amazing.

Back to the watches though...

Dave,

I have an Omega too. I have an automatic (I love auto movements) Seamaster Chronograph which my wife gave to me on my birthday. I love these Omegas. It felt really heavy in the beginning but now that I'm used to it the sensation of not having a heavy watch is a weird one.

I took this thing diving, and it takes all sorts of day to day abuse and it doesn't miss a beat!

The only other nice watch I have is a white gold Rolex my in laws gave me as a wedding gift. Very nice watch but I unfortunately hardly wear it.

Gee Scott,

My dad doesn't own a Rolls either. Why don't you dump that bitter tone. It doesn't suit you.

I started my first business as a sophomore in college with little to no funding (proverbial college beer and food money) and virtually no help from my dad. Things got easier from there.

Annoying pricks are to be found everywhere in every socioeconomic demographic. I don't approve of people "holding that over everyone's head and acting like a total snob is not a respectable thing to do". But for every "rich kid" who is like that there are plenty more who aren't. Maybe they're not as visible because they don't flaunt it. Generalizations will always come back to bite you on the rump.

And you can ask just about everyone I've spoken to about business on this board (dispensing advice, et al) on or off line. I'm about as self-made as you can get.

My dad blessed me with advice, good education, and the morals I grew up with. Once I showed how I could succeed he plugged me in to some of his "connections", which made things very easy. But even that is earned.

Cheers

Nebula,

His post insinuates that I am the pot calling the kettle black. I simply wanted to set the record straight. Perhaps I am a little over the top at times; however, once I choose to defend myself, I am at least going to explain my position with enough detail so the other person can re-evaluate their position. Perhaps now, Kendall thinks differently. Maybe not.

Taek,
Fine. So someone at some point made that money. Good for them. However, I (and I hope you) would believe that holding that over everyone's head and acting like a total snob is not a respectable thing to do.

Moreover, I would think you would hope your children would have a sense of appreciation, respect, and humility for what they have, based on what you did...as opposed to the grand sense of entitlement that many of my peers have. Perhaps you think differently. I have no idea.
You and I come from two competely different worlds- my dad doesn't own a Rolls, nor is he able to set me up with people to help my fledgling business.

I have no problems with you wanting an expensive car or watch.. What bothers me is your outlook on life regarding others who have nothing to do with your potential happiness but only the fact they have something you wish to attain but frustrated that life is not working out the way you wished...

I NEVER got a job through connections whatsoever... I understood from attending a non-ivy school if I wanted to get my foot in the door in an industry I wanted to, I had to do temp jobs, consulting assignments starting out in the back office working my way up... In the process, I put up with racial, verbal, mental abuse in the workplace and in the end I still got laid off anyway...

It seems to me from my interaction with you, that you have champagne tastes on a beer budget but unwilling to deviate in working your way up from the bottom...

You asked for my advice, and I will repeat this again.. The schools you attended although good quality schools is NOT enough to comfortably attain a career in the respective industry you wish to get into namely VC work or as an in house counselor at an M&A firm.. Those jobs usually go to candidates from top 5 or 10 schools...

Scott:

Be greatful you are not a rich kid! You know how hard it is to make a buck and will enjoy it all the more when you are rich. It will happen if you want it. I paid for my law school too and it sucks having loan debt. I personally have a GMT and love it - will never get another watch. Find one you love, sell the rest and take a hard earned vacation. :-)

Scott,
you need to realize that you have a great life and that it's a privilege to grow up in this nation.

You are complaining about driving vacations and how it's such a sacrifice to save up for a watch. Have you considered that people are getting limbs hacked off in other parts of the world. That kids are eating dirt because they're hungry and there's no food?

It's incredible how much you have to be thankful for. I will give you five things I can think of right away:
1) You being mentally and physically healthy and safe. People not so blessed--see how they live.
2) Being in the US. People die trying to get here.
3) Loving parents. Just go see the neglect in orphanages.
4) Being educated in law. You are part of an elite group with unlimited earning potential.
5) Your ability to speak, read, write English. Try making a living without these abilities.

Life isn't fair. But you are one of the fortunate ones. It's up to you to make the best of your lot. That won't happen by resenting others. Please, stop griping.

Scott,

I think you should change your outlook a little bit. I know that if I work my ass off and become successful one of the rewards in life would be to give my kid a nice car, watch, etc. Almost inevitably, someone at one point had to work for that money.

Cheers

My wife bought me an Omega Speedmaster day/date/month blue face chrono for Xmas 2 years ago. I never was much into watches until I got that one. Now I'm thinking about a gold/stainless Daytona with white/gold face after we get out house built. My dad, BTW, is a HUGE timepiece nut. His pride and joy is a grandfather clock that he bought in kit form and assembled!

Relax Scott. Wow. I think you should re-read his post.

Anyways, I bought a Tag Kirium in 2000, sold it and bought an Omega Seamaster in 2001, sold that, and am currently in the process of buying an Omega Seamster GMT (lay-away). I, too, am a starving college student, but the Tag and Omega were purchased when I was in sales and making a few dollars.

First of all, nobody is buying me the third watch...I am. Second, I said I would not be buying it for at least a year or two. I clearly mentioned I could not afford anything right now, as I am unemployed. In two years, things should be different for me financially, which makes buying a toy at least a possibility. Fourth, I can always dream. That is the next watch I WANT. Hell, I can think of about 5 other watches I want right now...doesn't mean I can or will get any of them.

By the way, the IWC is not $7k, it's $5800. Plus, I can get about 10-15% off that retail price, plus I can get about $1500 in trade on the Tag IF I really wanted to get rid of it (which right now, I don't). So if you know the IWC downt to 5k or so, and take away another $1500 for the Tag, it's about $3500. In two years, that could be very doable.

As for my complaint regarding rich kids, yes, they bother the Hell out of me. Why? Because I have worked for or bought pretty much everything I own. I don't have a brand new 50k car and spend my summer loafing around the country club or in some i-bank internship that came about through a family connection. My POS car needs 4k in work, and I might get 4k in trade at a dealership. My parents sure as Hell aren't gonna help me with any of that...

Regarding your insinuation that I am a rich kid:

If you must know, I spent the first two years of college at home at a lousy state school to keep my education costs as cheap as possible, commuting 45 minutes each way and working on weekends. I made the most of the situation and did very well acadmecally, getting a bunch of awards. My first two years of college cost 6k total, and as I said, I worked for my own spending money. I was then able to transfer to a leading university where I took out as many loans as I could to attend...as did my parents.

The Tag was bought at a deep discount (roughly about 20% off with no tax) from a leading east coast watch store. Why? Because they were incredibly proud of the fact that I not only went, but graduated from college...one of the best in country. They grew up dirt poor and never had an opportunity to attend college. Being a first generation college grad meant a lot to them...so they did what they could, which was that watch.

As for the Rolex, my parents didn't help out much during law school at all...I took out loans to cover all of it and they rarely gave me money, and I received almost nothing for bday or xmas. I didn't go home for Thanksgiving, wasn't home long for Xmas, and drove home to NY from TN once a year to get my car inspected. The Rolex was their way of congratulating me for another history-making event in our family, and possibly making up for previous things they think they did wrong. IIRC, I think they got a deal on the watch too.

If you think I'm a rich kid, fine. I've flown on a plane a grand total of 4 times in my life, had 3 vacations (all driving) from 1983-1994, and have never been west of TN.

Clearly, I lead the jet set lifestyle.

Scott - I'm a watch junkie too. Doesn't sound like too much to me :-) I have a Tag 2000 Exclusive with the rose gold and a Movado Vizio Chrono (both new in the last three years) - but I sure wouldn't mind a Patek! Not a collector - just like fancy timepieces. If you have the means, I say go for it!

Whether you are a collector or not, just wondering...

First watch (Tag 6000 Automatic, blue face) came at college graduation, and then another (Rolex Datejust, ivory arab face, white gold fluted bezel, jubilee bracelet)at law school graduation. I already want another watch, probably the IWC Portugeiser (not that i can afford it right now).

Assuming I got one in another year or 2, that works out to 3 watches 6-7 years. That seems like a lot...is this normal for a watch junkie?
