Agreed on the Spanish women! I must go to Spain soon...

I forgot to put in my favorite line about the motorcycle crash. When I say I totalled my shoulder I usually say "and ending my chances of pitching for the Dodgers." Of course I had no chance anyway but it gets 'em every time. ha!

Rich,

I think there's been a lull, because all of the older grads claim the same as you. German chicks...my god. I love the spaniards, but germany has some gorgeous women!

Got me Mike! As I recall, I was pretty much hooked up with one girl most of the time and busy surfing and doing college radio and a band and all that junk to dedicate myself fully to exploring the rest of the female student body. Oh yeah, I went to classes somewhere in there as well. Then towards the end I decided the American chicks were too boring and started dating German girls who were working as Au Pairs in Montecito. Now that was where it was at!

Just take it slow on those Montecito hill roads late at night - I totalled my restored '67 Triumph T100 (and my shoulder!) up there trying to get one of those girls back to my place in SB as fast as possible! She got a concussion (this was 1990 prior to the mandatory helmet laws) but she didn't leave me, ha! Maybe it just added to the whole experience for her: spend a year in america (on a 90 day visa!), go out with college boy, ride all over the place on his motorcycle, then one night take a trip to the emergency room...the american dream, no?

Dan, sorry to hear that the girls have gotten ugly since my time there, ha! Sure, I saw some scary ones but overall it was a pleasant. So much so that it took me 5 years for my BA!

Looks like Cal Tech is #4. Here's a site that has the US News rankings for various branches of engineering:

Thanks for the info Rich...

I had no idea Berkeley was #2... looks more and more appealing.

What about CalTech? Where did it make the list? Did it?

In light of recent Supreme Court rulings, we shoud all keep in mind the effect of one's race and whether one is a "legacy" student. (George W. Bush got into Yale you know, ha!)

As a Californian native, let me pimp the UC schools a bit. You really need to look at the rankings because schools that may have top reputations overall might not have strong programs for the field you want to go into. I checked the web and it seems that: MIT is ranked #1 in chemical engineering with Berkeley being #2. Stanford is #6. UCLA is #22. Yale is not in the top 25.

My alma mater, University of California at Santa Barbara (go Gauchos!) is #12. Considering the weather and the quality of female students (in short, ugly girls go to schools where they can hide behind lots of clothing and UCSB is a bikini sort of place), I don't think UCSB can be beat! (as an undergrad they may let you out of the lab now and then).

My sister just got accepted to Yale for their grad school program. She had good grades (mostly all A's) in HS and good SAT's. She got a bachelors from Bowdoin in Biochemistry - probably a 3.7GPA or so. Took 2-3 years off and did basically nothing LOL, and then applied to Yale and got in.

Weather is OK - I love New England. Cold in winter, mostly hot in summer, temperate in fall and spring. Really nice place to live, IMO.

As for the money, it's EXPENSIVE. Her first year is somewhere on the order of $50,000. She is in an accelerated program for 3 years but she has to go to classes over the summers as well. The price drops each year (they probably figure some drop out, so they get their dough the first year!). I think the total cost is something like $120k for the 3 years.

She got a full scholarship. Some in grants, some in loans. After a certain age, or maybe after undergrad, they don't consider family income (my father was relieved!) so they considered her based on only her own income, which was like MAYBE $8-10k a year, if that.

Personally, I dropped out of a state school to get into the business world. It was one of the best decisions of my life. I see absolutely ZERO value in an ivy-league education. None whatsoever. I don't even think college is worth it if it costs more than $50k for all 4 years.

Just MHO of course.

FYI, Yale and Stanford rarely accept any community college students...

Thanks Nebula (along with the others)

I almost forgot about Berkeley (the school I was planning for anyway)...

I think both UCs are awesome and wouldn't mind going to either one.

I should just wait until transfer time to take the sats then no?

I'll be starting in the fall at the community college... And I'll be shooting for a 4.0...

It's funny... high school was the only time I never got a gpa of 4.0 or higher... Alas, a university won't look at your grades as a whippersnapper.

Nebula, how is UCLA? Are the requirements for transfer equal to Berkeley?

Thanks.

Nebula, Im hoping htat will happen to me. My grades arent THAT bad right now (HS) but I couldnt get in right away to a school like Yale. Yale has a good music program and hopefully Ill be able to transfer out there (unless I go to this academy in England instead).

If you are in NoCal, why not apply to Berkeley?

I did the same as you...horrible HS, blah blah blah. Started at a community college two years ago, managed a 4.0 GPA, and got into UCLA and Berkeley, both on a full ride. I was going to apply to Stanford, but I figured, why spend $80k at Stanford when I can spend nothing at Berkeley or UCLA?

I opted to go for UCLA, because they gave me double what Berkeley did. I'm taking my LSAT in the fall, and Law school is where I'll do my Ivy experience.

Do that. Go to a UC, spend a hell of a lot less, get the same education, and then apply to Yale for grad school.

I actualyl applied to Yale, straight out of high school though. Many of my friends applied as well and none of us got in. And I was not even close to the top of that group. One of my friends with a 1500 SAT score did not get in. Needless to say, I went to one of the other schools that accepted me.

My 2 cents is that without an SAT/ACT score and an impeccable HS record, you are going to be a long, long shot for Yale to consider.

i dont know about yale, but when talking to some reps from harvard they said that they do consider mare than the scores. any professional experience and recommendations from prfoessionals in the field, alumni, and past professors help too. also an essay written about why you chose them and what you intend to accomplish. maybe it is similar at yale?

but this was for the grad program though. i had this conversation a while ago so i hope im still correct.

Well as far as the weather it's hot as hell now! I think it all depends on how El Nino moves. Sometimes we have warmer winters (40's) and not much snow then some winters it's very cold (teens) and a lot of snow. We usually don't have a spring for some reason. Everything blooms in like a day then the temp shoots to the 90's. It's just a crapshoot. I was thinking of trying to get into Yale grad school so it would be interesting to hear some comments

How did you get in college without having taken the SAT's?? SAT scores are a must for anybody considering a quality 4 yr program..

I don't even think Yale would consider a transfer student from a junior college, the spread between the quality of students is too wide...

The tuition is around $28k per year for undergrad and around $30k for grad school, give or take a few grand depending what program you are enrolled in...

Generally its easier to get into a school as a transfer student, whicih is why i was thinking about transfering to cornell (good engineering dept). I have since decided not to because i really like where i go now, and even though its not as good a school as cornell, im still getting a good education.

lol

True saying such a thing in a British accent would be nice.

Well, my love for Northern California (don't ask why...) makes me more Stanford crazy than Yale crazy.

I'm not much of a musician though. :/

Yea, they are very tough ot hit. Ive known people who have gone to Harvard and Yale and so on and from what I know of the, they had straight A's (including honors and AP classes), great SAT scores, and lots of extra curricular activities (they were all great musicians in the orchestra). However, Ive heard that junior college transfer requirements arent as tough.

Why not give the schools a call and see what they say? You said it yourself, give it a shot. It would be nice to say *british accent* "I attended Yale..." :-)

I'd like to think luck will have something to do with it...

I donno... these kind of schools though... unless... you got a 4.0 in HS and a superhigh sat score... you might as well as forget it... :-(

Oh well... I might as well apply when the time comes anyway.

Well, I dont know much about acceptance, but you might want to check out the departments of both schools completely before deciding on which you would like to try for, but by all means, apply to both and maybe youll get lucky :-)

Has anybody here studied at Yale before? Either the college or the grad school.

Realistically, how much a semester? Besides tuition. How much are apartments over there? How is the weather in Connecticut?

I didn't too that well (meaning no stright A's) in HS... and I didn't take the sat. Would such a school accept me as a juniour college transfer student if I have a gpa of 3.9 or higher? I've never really considered an ivy leauge school.

Is Yale a better school than say Stanford?

I'm looking into chemical engineering.

Thanks.
