John, I do save boxes. I don't save too many, but I have a few. They are nice for display. Ah, the elusive Gold Medal. I don't have a solid place to find any. They are getting more and more difficult to find. The last ones I found were in Hong Kong(probably the worlds best source for rare and collectible cigars). If you ever come across a good source please let me know, I will do the same for you. I'd like to get several boxes to set aside as I am currently out. |

Do any of you save your empty cigar boxes? I like to save the nicer ones and set them up for display in my house. |

Tyler Sounds like your idea could be a very rewarding and satisfying experience. I have been looking for Gold Medals for a good while now. Know of any solid place to find a few? Best of luck! |

John, there are so many "perfect" cigars. I would be hard pressed to nail down one single cigar that is perfect. I want different characteristics in a cigar at different times. I also enjoy varying sizes although Torpedos are probably my all around favorite. Here are a few of the things that my favorites have in common. Spiciness, peppery finish, starts stong, finishes even stronger. My vote for best smoke period. Bolivar Gold Medal. Will come back with more details later. |

Well this starts a whole new topic...what you would look for in the PERFECT cigat... I would look for a smooth, strong choclaty taste, hint of coffe, some cinnamon, no spiceyness or fruityness, VERY creamy, maybe even a little sweet...looks wise it would be a oily maduro, can't think of the name for the size, but like a RyJ churchill with perfect white ash and a nice, full draw... |

John, I agree with everything you said. I have a little advantage in this area as several of the largest cigar manufacturers are close friends. I've intimately familiar with all the processes involved and I'm interested in doing this mostly for my own satisfaction(a little profit would be a nice bonus). It would be made in Costa Rica or Honduras. I have no interest in any U.S. tobacco.

The reason Im thinking about all this is, if you watch the movie, you will realize HOW intricate the proccess really is, for exaple, how the leaves are stacked to dry out and where and how long has a HUGE affect of the taste of the cigar and thats just one MINUTE detail of teh whole process... I would reccomend (if it is to your tastes) to make the cigar very creamy, it is a very cuban characteristic and I love it in a cigar. |

I think its a GREAT idea, BUT remember, even the companies that have been producing cigars for ages and know all the intricacies of doing so can make pretty crummy cigars, and I think it would be VERY tough to make a good cigar growing in U.S soil (assuming thats where you live) and once you have the chance to taste the cigar to determine if its any good, the capital will have been spent. In making a good cigar yuo have to look at soil, climate, leaf, growing conditions, picking time, drying time, rolling technique etc etc...but if you can get help from someone in the know, and are able to make a nice cigar that caters to YOUR tastes, WOW that would be incredible and possible profitable. |

Okay, its called "The Fabulous Story of the Cuban Cigar" you can get it on amazon.com on DVD. Here is a blurb about it...I recomend it, great movie to watch while smoking a nice cuban. Welcome to Havana, Cuba...home of the legendary Cuban Cigar! This is a fascinating place where a stick of rolled tobacco leaf is turned into an intricate art form -- producing a desire of international passion. The secret of this extraordinary cigar is born from the rich Cuban soil, her special seed and the magnificent leaf itself. The island's famous tobacco growing regions, including the legendary Vegas of the Vuelta Abajo, are hailed as those which produce the legendary "Havana smoke" -- renowned for being the best the world has to offer and "The Puro"...meaning of pure Havana origin. You will discover the Cuban cigar's history from the experts including the Havana historian, the Cuban peasant with his hands of gold and the legends collector. Through human contrasts and into the discovery of a living tradition, this film follows the footsteps of the "Havana myth" that they each personify in their own way. For the pleasure of the aficionado, the connoisseur and cigar lovers everywhere, this wonderful documentary will take you on a journey into the mystical world of the Cuban cigar and the magic that surrounds it. Enjoy! Documentary / 60 minutes (sufficient to smoking a Grand Corona!)

Matthew, it will be a few years. I'm not interested in entering the market quite yet. Still debating setting up my own factory versus using a friend to produce my cigars for me. LOTS of details to work out first. |

John, sounds about right. Funny, but I've never felt like I "needed" a cigar. I've gone years without smoking them before. I have some friends who are cigarette smokers and are most certainly addicted. I can't relate to that, thank God. |

Tyler, let me know when you have a test product ready. On the strong side, with food, scotch or red wine, maduro and aged would be great with me. For a drive and a smoke, easy draw and lighter taste is the call of the day. |

"John, I'm obsessed!" Don't get addicted, I've heard (dont know if its true) that nicotine enters the body from cigar smoke through the mouth (absorbed by the tissue) and enters the blood stream like ciggerettes (or however you spell that) and can be addictive. PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong so I don't have to worry about it ;) BTW, for anyone else obsessed with cigars, there is a video, a documentary, the name of which I cna't remember, but on cuban cigars, its GREAT it shows all the techniques for growing, the art of rolling, the PROPER way to light and smoke one, the history of them, etc etc etc and GREAT images of thousands of perfect cohibas piled high on tables etc...I smoked a cohiba esplendido while drinking lagavulin (or however you spell THAT) 18 it was a nice evening... |

John, I'm obsessed! I LOVE cigars. I enjoy all aspects of cigars, from the seed to the ash so to speak. They are one of the pleasures in life I am most passionate about. No, joke, I am considering producing my own cigar. Probably won't become a reality for a few years, but I'm slowly getting there. |

This Onyx was beautiful, dark oily brown, long, pure white ash, even burn...but it was only good, not excellent, probably wouldn't buy them regularily, but its a nice, strong, flavourful cigar. |
