Let's see if we can revive this thread. I've recently starting enjoying cigars, and I'm still on the lookout for 'the one' that Mike describes. I have recently smoked: 1) Macanudo Robusto - smoked out of a friends unmaintained humidor. Dry/bland..I will credit that to the humidor. 2) Paratages Sabroso Tube - smoked out of the same unmaintained humidor. Dry/bland..will credit that to the humidor. After another dryed out piece, I decided to go to my local smoke shop. I was on the lookout for some Bahia as recommended by Tyler, but the store doesn't seem to cary them. Bogus. I ended up having: 3) Ashton Cabinet 11 ($11) Very nice taste. This cigar reminded me of fresh tea and had a nice aftertaste. Very decent cigar, but a little too mild/light for me. Will have another one someday. 4) Partagas Maduro Naturales ($6) - This was my favorite to date...must be the Maduro wrapper.. Nice cool, smooth, clean draw. This tasted a bit like I always thought good cigar's smelled, (good) but still a little mild. Will have another one soon. 5) Romeo Y Julieta #2 ($5) - Decent taste, decently smooth. The wrapper was a little bit loose by the cap....made the cigar a bit chewy. To me, just average taste. Mild. Probably won't have another one anytime soon. I still have a Punch left to try tonight...., but so far haven't found that cheap smoke that I would smoke reliably. Will report on this one later....still looking for recomendations and prices. I have been looking for a 'spicey' or 'peppered' tasty cigar, and have not come across anything of that sort yet. I have a list started already thanks to a few members here, and will continue to add till I hit that jackpot. Also, I have a bullet cutter, and bought a cheap-o double Guillotine cutter to see if I prefer that. I do, and am now looking for places/recomendations on where to purchase a nice quality one. Thanks! Nick |

Another cheaper cigar worth trying would be a La Gloria Cubana(dominican variety). They can be found for a relatively nice price and are decent smokes. Try www.famous-smoke.com for a good bargain. I too recommend an Arturo Fuente. Enjoy |

Dan, the Dominican Montecristos are pretty mild and bland. Might try a Bahia Maduro pancho or robusto sometime. |

Ok, so I tried as Montecristo Robusto as my first cigar, and found it somewhat bland and disappointing. Any pointers? I did notice a slightly un-even burn as well, but that's most likely my novice fault. So, point away... --Dan |

wm hart, you hit the nail on the head. Mike, the cigars I listed would all be considered strong to very strong smokes. I enjoy very strong cigars. |

My vote: the Bolivars. Unfortunately, you have to get them from the little isle off the coast of Miami, and because they are not a BIG IMAGE brand, they are not counterfeited and bootlegged to the degree that Cohiba, Montecristo, etc. are. The only other problemo: they tend to be quite spicy. But, a hell of a good smoke, and can be had cheaper than some of the brands you mention. (There is actually a reverse snob thing too: i found it in wines, where people would exclaim what a great bargain some particular wine was, which, i suppose it was if you wanted to drink cheap wine. But to say that its comparable to the great ones is silly). Not defending elitism, but there is a reason why some things can command the price. Philosophically, you achieve your own comfort level of cost/benefit based partly on your pocketbook, partly on exposure and partly on your own set of values. I used to think spending money on a fancy hotel when i travelled was a waste. My views of that have changed, partly because life is short, discomfort not interesting, and like they say about cigars, why smoke a bad one when you can smoke a good one. |

When in high school playing Italian poker with the boys, it was the infamous Swisher Sweet. Mmmm good... at least until Mr. Pascarella caught us smoking them. |

Tyler, I also find higher priced cigars to be quality cigars, but two points I was making. 1) Whenever someone asks "what kind of XYZ do you prefer?" I notice people continually try to out-spend the others. not everyone, just some. A shoe thread goes from Walmart brand, to Nike, to Timberland, to Prada, to Bruno Magli. A watch thread goes from Swatch, to Sector, to Tag, to Movado, to Rolex, to Patek, to Cartier. Ad nauseum. 2) I would disagree that "the only good smoke is an expensive smoke". I know that's not what you said, but, there are some very good smokes that are cheap. Like I said in another thread, I have a friend who'se dad is very wealthy, and the guy has a humidor of smokes that start about $250 per for the cheapies. Some are good, some I don't like, they are all quality, but I've smoked some $20 cigars that are WAY better (to me) than some of his $300 cigars. I guess I would disagree that expensive = better. Ferrari is a great example. A big part of what makes a Ferrari expensive is that they have created a following an an allure, and the answer to why they charge so much is "because they can". Is a Ferrari 360 at $170k 4 times the car a Corvette at $40k is? Is a Murcielago twice the car of the 360? Probably if you are really into the image aspect, or, if you can just afford it and that last 1% is worth paying for. But alot of folks buy Ferraris and Murcies because they want to appear to have money. Same with people who often one-up everyone else with suggestions. Are Cartiers the only good watches? No, probably don't keep as good time as an average Citizen, but there is a certain amount of ego involved in buying those products. "the little things" are often what make people flash their cash to buy these things - so others will say "wow, look an XYZ!". I'm just trying to remove that aspect of the discussion. We can all talk about the most expensive cigars we know the name of and say that's our favorite over in the other thread... but in this one, we should talk about what we smoke day-to-day, or what someoen looking to get into a new smoke for a tenner can pick up on the way back from the office on Friday and enjoy without knowing they're smoking a c-note. Thanks for your comments and suggestions though - I guess I'm trying to expand my horizons and find some more cigars that are reasonably priced, and good. What would you say about the strengh of those you mentioned? The ones I like are mostly pretty mild - I like mild. What about your suggestions? Thank you for your comments Tyler. |

Well, Mike, I have to disagree with you a little. It is a fact that my favorite smokes are rare and expensive, but they are not my favorites because they are so. I have yet to converse with someone here who trys to play "one-upmanship" with cigars. Rare and expensive cigars are that way for a reason. I think you find that with most products in the world. The best is always rare and expensive. It's the little things that make them so. Here are my picks for excellent smokes under $10.00 Bahia Trinidad: churchill, torpedo, robusto, rothschild Bahia Gold Natural: Churchill, No. 2 Bahia White Gold: Churchill Bahia Gold Maduro: Serie A, No. 4(look fast the Gold Maduros have been discontinued, the new blend will be out in several months) Hoyo De Nicaragua-Antonio: Robusto Camacho Diploma: robusto Camacho Corojo: corona, churchill, torpedo La Flor Dominicana Ligero: Torpedo Camacho SLR: Toro

The holy grail of any cigar smoker is a good cigar that DOESN'T cost an arm and a leg. With all due respect to other members, often when someone posts "what type of XXXXX do you like?" (where XXXX may be wine, cigars, cars, shoes, etc, etc) it seems like many play the game of one-upmanship by naming ever more rare or expensive products. So forget about what the snobs think... what LOW PRICE cigar do you like? I would consider LOW PRICE to be something around $10 per or less. I will name a few 1) DIAMOND CROWN - best...cigar... evar! $10-15/ea depending on size and where you get them. 2) Partagas. In their own glass tube... I get them for about $7/ea at my local smoke shop 3) Te-Amo. Not bad for a cheap smoke - 80% of the quality and enjoyment, for 30% of the price! About $3-4 where I get my smokes 4) Romeo y Julieta. Maybe a step up from the Te Amo.. about $5/ea where I get mine. Maybe a little better than the $3 stuff but a bit more $$ 5) Arturo Fuente. A wide range of smokes... decent quality, decent price Ok, what else? Forget about the stuff you only buy at exclusive shops in big cities - I'm talking the stuff that even some convenience stores carry - the ones with the little humidors behind the counter. Or the stuff you can get at the counter of a decent restaurant. Name your good CHEAP smoke, and the price! My backup smoke that is smooth, tasty, and makes ya feel good is the old Marlboro Light 100's! Only $5 for 20!!!! |
