For automotives I prefer the British mags. They seem less biased and always include a bit of wit. FORZA of course and Most all of the Digital and recording monthly's. Vintage Guitar shopper and once in a great while MAxim or Stuff |

I always read "Car Craft" when I go to Barnes and Nobles Booksellers. It's a good magazine. |

Check out Grass Roots Motorsport if you see one on a shelf sometime. It is thick, has lots of info, and overall is very good. |

Cars: growing up my brother and i kept a subscription to Motor Trend. loved it. first of all the subscription was like $12 a year. and we still talk about the concept cars we saw in those magazines, what they turned out to be when they hit the streets, and the influence they have had on other cars. some of our favorites are the Boxster, viper, and corvette indy. business: I love Inc. magazine too. forgot to add it to my list in the other thread. Used to read another called Fortune Small Business that was good. Computers: since i do (read: try to) 3d graphics as a hobby, i read Computer Arts and 3D world. They are good for software reviews, free software, and behind-the-scenes looks at the technology involed in pulling off movies like Finding Nemo, Monsters, Inc., Spiderman, Hulk, etc. Design: being involved in architecture and design, i like Architectural Record and metropolis, although these mags have way too many ads. How magazine involves the graphic design industry. and Abitare is a great Italian magazine about architectue, Interior, and furniture design.

Sports Car Marketplace is a great read. Keeps one in tune with the market. Also like Sports Car International because they only do sports car write ups. Also, they always do a classic car article. |

Racecar engineering can be interesting, CAR and EVO are definetly solid, and then Economist, I guess, since it's in magazine format. ONly other publication I read regularly is the newspaper (WSJ). --Dan |

On the bike thing, i was buying all these British sport bike magazines which compete with each other for shots of nubile chicks, along with spreads on high performance bikes. On cars, i buy/read most all of them, including the ones devoted to "classic" cars. Among the ones devoted to current autos, i like CAR. Sportscar Marketplace is also alot of fun, with pics and prices, along with articles by Sheehan and others on their marque specialties. One of the highest quality ones that i get is the American Express "Departures" magazine, which has a Robb Report perspective, but mainly on travel. I used to be consumed by Stereophile (J. Gordon Holt era) and The Absolute Sound, among others. When i was doing alot of flying, i used to buy magazines by the suitcase full, just to keep myself occupied on planes. The bonus is that you can clip out the stuff you want, and chuck the rest. Cavallino remains impressive, largely because of the quality and vintage of the photos.

I used to subscribe to soooo many rags and ended up tossing 1/2 them out. I found a few "diamonds in the rough" (if you will). My areas of interest are/were business, cars, motorcycles, electronics, computers, and metalworking. Cars: I like Motor Trend. Car&Driver and Road&Track seem to have euro-car fetishes. C&D is the worst - those guys seem to sport wood for any euro car and consider themselves part of the wine and cheese crowd. I LIKE when MT does burnout shots, and honest reviews. I also have to say AutoWeek is good for genuine NEWS about the auto industry. Anyone got any other picks? Business: My top is Inc. magazine. By FAR! I've subscribed to many, and Inc does articles that actually answer questions. Ever notice they will do an "article" on something or other, and they talk about the subject but offer no real insight, advice, or recommendations? I find Inc will pick a subject, analyze it, flesh it out, and offer a good summation. Entrepreneur was OK, but it's too filled with "wannabe business-dude" stuff. I don't want a hype mag telling me how to make millions, I want real insight into MY business and what I might face today and tomorrow. The WSJ is a good overall business-related text. Kinda a data-view of the business world, and you are better making your own conclusions, IMO. There should be some good picks here! Motorcycles: Cycle World is the only one I really care for. I bet there are alot of other picks though. I HATE the rags that are so biased either toward or against specific bikes. I also hate those that pick the bike with the lowest 1/4 time and proclaim it the new asskicker. I prefer a review of the field, not a 3-page bung-smootch to the manufacturer. Electronics: I'm talking circuit design... i don't really know of any? Anyone got any picks? Metalworking: Home Shop Machinist. Really interesting stuff and shows you how you can do pro-level stuff in your po-po level shop. General: Just for fun, I also find Popular Mechanics very interesting - as a MechE (by schooling). Also like The Robb Report (did I spell that right?). just fun to pontificate on what I would spend my day buying if I was Bill Gates rich. Popular Electronics is good too. I find some articles in Readers Digest worthwhile, although I rarely have time for them. Should be some good picks here! let's hear them. Enlighen me. |
