Peter, but by the end of the day, we are going home in a Ferrari, and they in a Civic.

Quite simply, who would you rather be? :-)

It was quite awhile ago, but I'm pretty sure it did have glass covered headlights. If the brits made halfway decent engines they would have some wicked cars. It was cool though.

Bret,

The car you saw was an E-Type or XKE (same thing). Thats what was in both the Avengers and Austin Powers. Did it have glass covered headlights?

An E-type is an awesome car. The best years are '65 to '67 4.2 liter. The factory claimed 265bhp but reality was more like 215bhp. Still, they are quick cars and a blast to drive. I have owned tons of these as I used to restore and sell them. A nice roadster is among the most beautiful and fun cars you can own. The coupes many people think look better than the roadsters and cost much less. A really nice coupe can be had for $25K. Dont buy a post 1967 car, they are dogs. The V12's also suck: heavy and a maintenace nightmare. Alloy heads on an iron block is never a good idea!

Speaking of driving out of control, today a brand new lamborghini diablo 6.0vt crashed head on into a volvo while racing a corvette, which also crashed, in Oceanside which is a down the shore type town not too far from me.

lambo crash

The silver block is the lamborghini, the blue one is the vette, and the green one is the volvo. The lambo and volvo drivers both died, but the passengers which were their wives both survived. The vette driver and passenger were unharmed. The vette pulled up next to the lambo and the two sat their revving their engines, when the light changed the vette took off and the lambo crossed the double lines to race after him. The vette slid out of control and into a tree or embankment, not much damage at all. The lambo went head on (driver's side) into the volvo which was coming the other way. The lambo was destroyed and the volvo rolled over. You could only really tell it was a diablo by looking at the back of it. It was weird seeing such a beautiful car all wrecked on the news.

Yeah they were right in the center and then the forked off just a little bit at the end. They were chromed and welded to the frame just behind the cats. I don't know much about Jaguars to be honest.

"...from the rear wheel sloped up sharply..." Hmmm, sounds more like an E-Type. Bret, were the tail pipes right next to each other, in the center?

Yeah it was a cool car. It had such nice classic lines to it, from that long stereotypical jaguar hood all the way to the back that sat high. The exhausts on it were pretty cool, all chromed with the little cats, it was all really visible because it's weird how the top lines of the trunk were normal, but the bottom of the trunk, like from the rear wheel sloped up sharply which is why you could see the exhaust so easily. An interesting car to say the least. It would've been cooler if it was the same year Ferrari.

The British car that Bret is describing is probably an XK-150

Apparently this movie is set to be released in Canada with a French title "Rapides et Dangereux" which from what I hear is loosely translated as......

I WISH I HAD A V-8!! LOL

check out

http://www.beaterz.com/

great stuff there, coffee can exhausts, shopping cart handle-bar style spoilers, all that junk.

regardless of the topic "who can beat who", you gotta at least give it to them for being economical - they can still push 20-30mpg which is a good thing. much better than my 302 pushing 7-12 during the high school/college years when the choices I had were between gas and food.

but back on the topic of this thread - I agree that this is a movie that will inspire kids in a negative way in how they behave on the streets and highways. its not a good thing, and I'm sure there will be critics that will attack the movie in the next few weeks after its release.

quite different than most high speed action movies since the premise of the movie is about racing in the streets.

Oh, at least these imports have an inspiring exaust note coming out of that 5 inch tip!! That sound is the best sound in the world.

BTW, im being sarcastic. Their exhausts sound "flatulent". IMO, they sound better stock.

Where i'm from there all so many of those cars. They think their cars are the fastest things on the planet and they drive like they are paul tracy (meaning they take stupid risks and usualy mess up their cars). My firend likes to shut them up in his camaro. But some of them really arent that bad. Theres some 25 year old guy who has a turboed honda civic. He also has an is300 thats going to florida in a few weeks for twin turbos. His MOM has a modena on order thats coming next spring (they also have a 308 or 328, im not sure because i've never been in his garage, but a friend of mine has and from what he tells me, thats what it seems to be.) Sorry i got off track a little. But mostly, all the rice-mobiles are extremely slow. I always laugh to myself when i see a VTEC or a type-r sticker on a 80's accord or any other car i know didnt come with that engine or in that model. At least there is a hemi 'cuda in the movie to partially redeem it.

Don't you think little imports of today are like the hot rods your dad worked on days of yesterday.

Speaking of old British cars, today at the gym there was a forest green jaguar, and old one that looked like it was from the 60s. It looked like the one in the movie the avengers (but not a coupe) or the austin powers car (it was a convertible). It didnt seem to have any lettering on it other than jaguar, but it looked really nice. I parked next to him. Does anyone know what kind of car this might be?

I guess every generation has their own thing. I had rather see them tinkering with a car than secluded in a back room playing video games. I also had rather hear the sound of a Honda revving up to 7000 RPMs than some stupid bass speaker vibrating my spine. If the kids will trade their stereos for glass packs, they get a thumbs up from me.

Hey, I remember when it was allthe rage to take way underpowered british sports cars, --sptifires, healys, tr6's fiats morris minors and turn them into fierce off-road rally machines... it was fun and I think this is inthe same traddition...you can afford a cheap car and have fun incrementally upgrading it as your cash flow and individuality permit.... hey has anyone caught wind of the new subaru with 113hp /liter and 0-60 in well under 6 sec for 24K out there... this thing is cashing in on this trend but can dust off and out handle most every pre1990 modena machine but hey,,, it still looks like a subaru

I'm going to one of those ghetto extravaganzas tonight. They're alright once in awhile. Some of those kids put a lot of work into their cars, but it's nothing like seeing Ferraris and all, but at least it keeps a lot of kids out of trouble. Their driving isn't exactly exemplary, but there are always a lot of cops at these things so all the cowboys get tickets right in the beginning.

RICECOP.COM....who thinks of that....

Boy, that Dodge Neon with the double wing is something. The 30HP that the car has stock must be reduced to 15HP due to excessive weight and additional air resistance that spoiler gives that car....

I never can understand these kids. I guess with the ever increasing prices of American and European cars there really isnt anywhere for them to turn for performance except the Asian markets. I still think a used Vette would be better than a new Civic or whatever ghettofied. I could never drive one of those cars, I would feel so like weird.

Anytime here in Vancouver too, I work nightshift most times and the industrial park with their straight roads are a haven for them on Friday nights. I've waited several minutes trying to get out of our lot for the traffic to clear. F----n kids. Our local drag strips have been opening up on Fridays just to try to alleviate it, but hardly makes a dent on it. F----n kids!

I haven't yet, but here in SF we have a VERY high Asian population compared to most other places (in the USA) and an EXTREMELY high population of these "rice rockets". About 1 in every 10 cars on the streets is a Japanese car modified in some form or fashion.

Any critics see the new movie " The Fast and the Furious" - where all the kids have suped up Honda Civics with Nitrous Packs?
