Price sounds good to me Peter, You take the Euro and I'll take the US version. Nothing wrong with healthy pushrod V8 wrapped in Italian skin. DJ |

The 302 is good engine when set up properly. I like it over the 289 for the power if nothing else. DJ |

Federico, IMHO, the four-headlight version looks WAY better than the two-light. No difference between the two motors in respect to reliability, but it all depends on that motor in that car - have a mechanic check it out. Find out in better detail the four-light's body condition (your comment: "possibly rustless", worries me...). |

Almost incredibly I may have found two cars on sale... In your opinion shlould I favour: European car (4 headlights), possibly rustless body, overall very good original condition except for almost new (6k km) 289 engine fitted, asking around 30k OR American car (2 popup headlights),professionally restored, new 302 engine and trans, asking arond 35k??? Into further detail, wich engine shoul give better reliability/driving pleasure? |

The highest bid on that Mangusta was $31,000. The seller did not accept the bid so it did not sell at that price. |

Think how easy that Mangusta's Ford motor is to service though. Or NOT service as the case may be when compared to Italian engines. That is what is so attractive about DeTomaso's--powerful engines, cheap to maintain. Even cheaper to modify, if that's your thing. The number one thing I go for in a car is asthetics. Then power. What brand of engine is irregardless to me. As for price .. I think you could pick up a good Mangusta for $40K. There is one here in Dallas for sale at that price, but its been for sale for so long, I bet it could be had for a lot less. People don't really know about these cars. So they don't demand that much. However, that may all change after Quentin Tarantino's new "Kill Bill" movie comes out this October. David Carradine's character drives an original Mangusta in this movie. I wouldn't doubt if that sparked a seller's market, at least for a while. Sort of like the '67 Shelby GT500 in "Gone in 60 Seconds". Story is that Carradine was given a choice between a Pantera and a Mangusta and he chose the Mangusta.

I saw a Mangusta in one of the regional auto trader magazines a while back. I think they wanted $65,000. Too high in my opinion. Of course they only made 412 of those, or something like that. But something is weird about putting a not-so-exotic Ford engine in a futuristic exotic car like a Mangusta. I think that's what turns some people off. But a Bizzarini with a Chevy engine is alot cooler.

Federico-Also try www.pantera.go.cc The website is off the wall but the guy (Robert) who runs it is well versed on all the De Tomasos. He is here local and personally owns 3 Mangustas and 3 Panteras. |

Same here...I like them...very radical for their time. Here's a past discussion about them: http://www.ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/18/8147.html Saw one for sale a while back (can't remember the dealership / weblink). It was either dark red or burgundy with tan interior (I think)...but the engine and trannie were all chromed...absolutely beautiful. Seems like they were asking over $200k at the time. Here are a few more quick links: http://home.earthlink.net/~colours2000/ http://www.fast-autos.net/detomaso/detomasomangusta.html http://www.pim.net/bordinat.html http://www.dealsonwheels.com/search/detailbig.cfm/Autos__ID/62857 http://www.panteracars.com/102202cdoffer.htm |

I think they are fantastic looking cars. Parts aren't as plentiful as the much more numerous Pantera, but they can be had. Either through vendors such as Hall Pantera in CA, or you'll have to machine your own. I suggest hooking up with a local Mangusta owner if possible, or at the least joining the internet Pantera list (which actually incompasses all DeTomaso vehicles) to find Mangusta owners to ask questions. |
