Yes, you've been on the giving end of that, but have you ever had someone scream at you for damaging your own car? I'm very careful with my cars (though I should wash them more than I do...) but I accidentally bottomed out my Viper on a @$*($%!@#$ sewer grate in front of a Subway last fall; I walk inside and this blue collar guy with a vein popping out of his head is lecturing me on how to drive MY car.

I was already disturbed enough, he didn't have to rub it in. He must have thought I didn't pay for it myself or something...

John, i know exactly how you feel... When i'm putt-putting down the road, i see these real nice cars and the people don't know how to park them or i hear people grinding gears as they're driving- UGH...!

i'm not sure what it's called, but i believe it's Lexus' latest model- looks almost like the prototype in the movie Minority Report... i was at CVS, getting into my car when a guy was coming, pulling into the spot next to me... i'm not a huge fan of Lexus, but they have some real nice cars, regardless- this was one of them... Now i back into all the spaces i pull into, but this guy was coming in nose first and was barely able to do it... & finally, the inevitable happened- he scraped the nose of the car on the curb... Big, loud, hideous, scraping noise; i felt it in the pit of my stomach... He was an older fellow, too... Just goes to show that, no matter how old some people are, they just don't fit the "worthy" DEScription...

DES, good points. Kenny, I am not jealous of what you have, as I would venture to say I have some pretty nice cars, but the reason you got to me is I saw this girl at the Porsche dealership looking at a 911 Cabriolet, she was about 16 and her dad just bought the car for her flat out, then and there and then I heard her say "Where should we go first, audio illusion (sound shop) or that rims place... she then proceeded to drive this BEAUTIFUL car down the lots driveway which is steep, and drove the front bumper HARD into the road. She just drove away, never signalling, going WAY too fast for the conditions (rain) and her dad chuckled as the salesman winced when she hit the front bumper and her dad said "She had a boxster before, but she wound up driving it INTO someones house. I was justing thinking, oh my god, this girl crashed a boxster, can't drive and it doesn't matter ONE BIT because she has an unlimited supply of Porsches, and I took it out on you... Sorry about that... BTW, I was looking at a GT2 at the dealership, OH MY GOD that car is nice, but they wouldn't let me test drive it in the snow so I'm coming back in a few days and hopefully I'll trade the vette and the spyder in on it.

John, when i see kids like Kenny drive by me in their BMWs, Lexuses or even sometimes Ferraris, i wanna kick myself in the sac- how do they have what they have and i don't...? Simple... That's life... i didn't get a bad turn or poor cards or whatever, i have the same opportunities as everyone else, i just play differently than others... If Kenny blows by my Sentra in a Diablo, i'll be chasing after him- but not to find out how or why he's got what he has, but to race him.

More power to you, Kenny, with whatever you get... i believe John means well, i just think we're all used to seeing the "spoiled brat rich kids" get something, f*ck it up, then get mommy and daddy to buy them another, right away, which is sometimes unnerving... Not saying you're a spoiled brat rich kid, but it's easy for the blind eye to see how you might stereotypically slip into that category...

i learned early on that youth does not preclude wisdom and just 'cause you're young, doesn't mean you don't know what you're doing or don't DEServe what you have... Just my two fifths of a nickle... :-)

John, I believe the original post was before 9/11- since then, like everyone else, I've taken a huge hit- the only exotic I could afford now would be a 1/18 scale Viper, and thats used off ebay lol

Kenny, how about getting a JOB and paying for your own car? The fact is, these cars your talking about are meant to be milestones that you reach through hard work or good investments and then enjoy. If your daddy gives you 50K to play with and a BMW at 16, then a lambo or Ferrari at 17, what will you have to work towards, what will motivate you to leave your mark on the world? I like to think I have a pretty nice stable, and I HUSTLED in real estate investments to earn them. I'm only 27, so it doesn't take long to do, but I EARNED every one of these cars, it just doesn't seem right to me for a 17 to have a Lambo, you haven't earned it or accomplished anything, yet you get something that most accomplished men dream about. Bottom line, you are spoiled and you won't make anything of yourself if you always accept handouts from your daddy. I know that sounds harsh, but its the unfortunate truth. I was in your position, my granparents bought me a new vette when I turned 18, but I didn't accept it because I knew if I was to enjoy a beautiful car like that, I had to pay for it with 100% my money. That said, I am jealous of your position ;)

400 bucks. www.valentine1.com - trust me, you can go cheaper, but once you've had a V1, you know why you shelled out the extra bucks. ebay? nah - don't trust it, just get one from valentine. group buy? no such thing. discount? no such thing. dealer? no such thing. only direct.

Randy, i'm positive... You're friend has definitely gotten more tickets than i and the most i've ever gotten at one time was 3 or 4 (a few times)... i have absolutely no intentions of breaking anyone's ticket record- i'd like to keep my number down, as low as possible (although, i just got one tonight; inspection sticker, he let me off, easy- car is registered in NY with a CT inspection sticker- he coulda got me for the busted head light and speeding, too. & get this- he asked me to get out of the car and gave me a sobriety test...! he had me 'follow the pen with my eyes, without moving my head' and recite the alphabet...! He asked me why i was so defensive, LOL... i was annoyed...! Still, he was a nice guy)...

i got my agent to look around and he found another company and they literally cut the rate in half- $3,150 and i only have liability on my car- the minimum amount of insurance you're legally allowed to have in NY...
As far as having trouble with my right foot- it's funny you should mention that; i seem to have more trouble lately than ever before... i was pulled over on Friday for 56 in a 30 (he let me off with a warning) and tonight, the cop could've written me up for 55 in a 40... Not to mention, after he left, i got on the parkway and was 4 miles under doubling the speed limit... i easily double it around town, too, when it's late and no one's around... i'm doin' 75-80 in a 40 without even blinking... It's not good, but i really can't help it... Not too long ago, a very close friend of mine asked me to drive the whole way home, from her house to my house, without going over the speed limit... The trip normally takes 10 minutes- it took over 20 and i almost pulled my hair out... The last thing i want is for my license to be suspended again... The first time they suspended it- i didn't even have one yet...! Figure that one out...! i don't want my uncle to think that the 10k my uncle spent in legal fees in CT, trying to keep me out of prison for ignoring a slew of tickets went unappreciated, so i DO try to be conservative when i'm behind the wheel... But driving is the only thing that makes me happy, so sometimes, it's kinda hard...

Like you, i'm certainly not proud of any of this, but it comes with the territory... Maybe as i get older, this will fizzle out and i'll drive at a more appropriate speed...

How much is a Valentine 1, by the way...? i've never had a radar detector, but i'm sure i would benefit from one...

DES - are you *sure* about that? I only know one person who has more tickets than I do, and he's twice my age and that also includes one venture of his which tacked on 13 tickets of 'aggrivated' motor violations in one night. Personally, being just a few months under 30, comparing to the majority of people - I have more tickets than you and all your friends put together. Its not something to be proud of, but lets put it this way - I have several file folders full of tickets and court information.

The V1 is a lifesaver - I REPEAT... THE V1 IS A LIFESAVER!

I really can't imagine paying that much for insurance. Have you tried 500 deductables? or even 1000? Never know if you are shelling out big bucks for 100 deductables and other add-ons that you wouldn't need with a Sentra.

Trust me, I don't think you've had that much trouble with the right foot. Have you been to Defensive Driving Level II yet? If not... then you have a ways to go. =D *chuckles*

Hey Kenny--Hasn't the market been a little kinder to your money in the last 6 months? With a little shrewd investing, by the time you reach the ripe old age of 21, you should be able to buy a fleet of cars! Just a thought.

Thanks John and John,

I am seriously looking into a 348 now. My uncle (Dan Perkins) owns a series of dealerships around the east coast- Ford/Chevy/GM- alot of American stuff, and he said his technicians would be able to work on the car. The question is whether I want a TS or a plain old Spyder.- Chances are I want to get the Targa due to the fact that I can track it, and enjoy the open air. I've heard that the targa tops never cover the whole between the A and B pillar- and that rain gets in when its on. Is it true? Any other comments on it?

Kenny,
I love the car it is a truly awesome drive and the sound as everyone says is great once you open it up with a Tubi or by removing the cats. At first it was actually a quite car, most people I know didnt hear it or thought it sounded like a honda at low RPM's. That all changed when the cats came off, now it sounds much better. As far as positives they are as follows:

1.) Gives you the best feeling in the world when you turn the key and pop her into first gear. It still makes me excited to drive it each and every time!!
2.) Above mentioned sound.
3.) How well it handles. No body roll, and once you add spacers to widen the rear track it becomes much less twitchy.
4.) Down shifting from 5th to 3rd and blowing past some car to pass them on a open two lane!
5.) The way the car fits me is much better than the 355 I think. It to me feel more race carish and far more exotic than the 355. I have driven both and just "feel" like I am driving something special behind the wheel of the 348.
6.) Power at HIGH RPM's 6000+
7.) I'd be a liar if I didnt say I loved the attention that it gets....everyone who normally wouldnt look your way twice wants to be your friend. Its fun to see the same people that flip me off in my Accord or my TransAm suddenly waving me in.

Negatives:
1.) Had to do 30K shortly after getting the car....and found out that 30K isnt a week long procedure more like month long!! That and it empties your pocket book ($5k), but the good news is that then I know everything is solid in the engine.
2.) Clutch is HEAVY making it a bear to drive in major rush hour traffic....thank god I only got stuck in it once.
3.) For me being 6'3" the seats were really uncomfortable so I replaced them with OMP seats which make all the difference in the world.
4.) Speedo quit working for me.

Other than that the car has been a dream to drive and own. You have the usual thinks like the front dragging on every bump higher than 4" or letting the baby warm up properly before driving it, but thats half the fun! If your every interested or get the chance to get to Minnesota I would let you take a spin in mine to see what you think of it if you are truly interested in buying one. I was lucky and got to test drive a 355,348, and 328 before making my mine up on this baby. If you want to know anything else let me know I would be glad to help you out!!

I'm 23 and currently drive a 348. I have been insured on Vettes before when I was younger and the insurance was unreal....so much so that I would store the car for 6 months so I only had to pay once. I know from talking to people that insurance on Lambo is more than on a Ferrari because they are seen as a higher risk car.

No it wont effect the price one bit because there is no insurance company that will insure you like that. I have to go through geico because I am to young to be insure through a place that does classics and exotics with a milage limit. I would suggest that if you can get your father to insure it and just not mention you will drive it every now and then. But man its going to be expensive either way.

Kenny,
Not to burst your bubble but you better set your sights a little lower than a Viper, 348 or Lambo. Insurance is going to KILL you!!!! Even if you insure the car through your father you are still going to pay out the ear to probably the tune of $3000 every six months. I called Geico to confirm and if I put my 18 year old brother on the policy for my 348 my insurance went to $2893 for 6 months. Shoot a little lower like a 308, 328 or some thing along those lines Bret on here could probably let you know what it cost to insure that car. Anyway just wanted to warn you before you made the leap to buy....I paid the price once on a vette I bought when I was 17 and didnt check insurance rates :0(

eh, its too late now. I think they sold the car to some European dealership for twice the price that they offered it to us at... Thinking about it now, I do not regret passing on the car- it would be a helluva lot of work, expensive as hell, and probably too much to deal with.

Hmmm... Jota? I don't know much about Lambo, but I think this model was Miura based, developed by Bob Wallace, VERY RARE.

If it were me, I would've gotten it and fabricated the unobtainium pieces.

Depreciation... Times like this, it would be worth it to take the bite and save such a rare car.

I believe it was some sort of Miura. I think that when they left the car in storage, they forgot to drain one of the engine compartments, and it bled through, leaving damage that couldn't be repaired- you had to replace it, and it wouldn't be worth it- because the parts are soo damn rare- and it would depreciate.

Im surprised this post is still getting responses! Its about 6 months old... Turns out that the car had rust on the under-belly and we decided to give up on it. I am turing 17 on the 16th (of April), and will drop by MillerMotorCars for a 348TB- see what they have there, or what they can find. Sounds like the insurance is going to be a b*tch, so I might have to wait a while before buying... Damn!

Hi (again) everybody. It's been some time since I posted here, actually since my 348 crash last October but I do periodically read the postings. As I said before you can take me out of the Ferrari but you can't take the Ferrari out of me.

My automotive effort are turned torwards restoring/refurbishing a 1987 Lambo Japla. Here's the story for anyone interested.

http://pages.sbcglobal.net/lxmichaels/Default.htm

A very interesting car. dual personality, sometimes like a Ferrari and the rest a strange Italian cousin. having lots of fun with it. Hopefully ready in time for Consorso Italiano in August.

Lot's of new Ferrari chatters, good stuff!

Hey Kenny,
I live in Atlanta, and I would be happy to go look it over for you. I would venture to say that whatever Lambo he is referring to must be a V8 model....but I cannot think of any V8 that there were only 3 imported. Perhaps a Silhoulette? Anyway, my company links buyers and sellers of exotics together. Let me know if I can help you out. Good luck!

It's pretty easy getting into these cars....even if you have enough money to put it on the road. Just remember there is year 2, 3, 4 etc. You'll need to save money, and plenty of it, for maintenance. Good luck and live your dreams.

What specifically is this model of Lambo? Even if its been preserved correctly, it would still need lots of work to get road-worthy. Every rubber hose, gasket, and seal should be replaced. But if you're left with ten-large after buying, you should have enough to cover those parts. Parts will be expensive and without as many specialists around to carry these parts (as compared to Ferrari. Look at all of the independants in the back of Forza mag. And Lambo? Hello, out there somewhere?). It sounds like the car is in good shape (exterior/interior...?). Just needs life to be breathed into it, right?

At 16, I know I would've creamed my pants if I had a Lambo. Besides, if you do get this project car, it would make a great Father-Son project. As much as I say here that I've done this and I've repaired that on my car, its my Dad and I that have been working on my GT4. He has done so much for me. He's totally responsible for my gas-tank refinishing and currently is working on my wheels. He gets more of a kick out of it than me!

Hey,

After watching my stock simmer in the market for the past 6 months, I have been looking at alternate ways of income. I have a little under 50k in the market right now which I am eager to pull. Real estate is way to expensive for a 16 year old kid, that is out of the question. Technology changes to quickly. I have been looking at cars to invest in; growing up around British cars made me first turn towards an E-Type Jaguar, but the exotic-ness just isn't there. I have thought about other cars in the 50k range like a 92-95 Viper, but this car isn't at all appealing to my father. I have been looking for a 308, 328 or 348 for a few weeks now, but from what I have heard, the more appealing 348 is nothing but trouble. Tonight, at dinner, my father brought up the fact that a business partner of his collects cars in Atlanta and his father had recently passed away. From what I could understand, his father had put away a Lamborghini- drained the engine and put it on stilts, perfect condition. My father did not pick up the name or the year of the Lamborghini, but was told that is was 1 of 3 to be delivered to the United States of that model and was extremely rare. He was told that it would sell for about 40 thousand.

What is the difference between Lamborghini servicing and Ferrari servicing? Is there a price difference? Have you any experience with the Countach (25th aniversary I am pushing for)? What kind of expensives might I have for that car.
