I saw my first Murcielago on Saturday. Luckily, it was parked and I was able to spend about 15 minutes looking it over from all directions.

Firstly....the chrome yellow paint on this particular example was fantastic !!!

Secondly....this car does not photograph well at all I think. My initial impression of photos was of a large, cumbersome looking car. This vehicle is actually a lot smaller than I expected....and much lower in profile as well.

Thirdly.....the back end (grills, taillight assy and area where license plate goes) still looks awful....even in person, althought it is not as bad as in photographs. I imagine on a black or dark blue car this effect would be minimized....it certainly would be my choice in any event.

Last.....when the owner drove away some 30 minutes later.....I was having lunch across the street, it sounded like every other car out there.

On a scale of 10 it's a 8.0 for me.....I like the Diablo 6.0 better for overall curb appeal/optical dynamics etc.

Allan....

DAUER build about 20 street legal 962's in 1994. In fact....Porsche AG supported the one that won LeMans that year.

I know a guy who is having a company build him a street legal 962, using many genuine factory parts. It will be faster than any real 962 as it will be around 1900pds, 800hp+nos. It will also have a/c. The company is called Gunnar racing, and all they do is restore Porsche factory race cars.

Paul, if you're referring to my profile, it's a Dauer LM962... the picture is from an article on the Sultan of Brunei- those two are his, along with 4 others he owns... i like the Dauer 'cause of the way it looks (i mean, just look at it- doesn't it just look obscenely fast...?) and has the 0-60 top speed locked, as far as i know- in only 2.6 seconds...! If anyone knows of something faster, please enlighten me...

What's that black car pictured in your profile?

Remember the origional LP400 Countach? I like it the best of the Countach series because it was clean and true to the designer. I never liked all the added on flairs and wings that it grew over the years. Very hard to find a good example of the earliest version so perhaps sales weren't so good.
I wonder if the new Lambo will go the same route by adding things to the body.

I think that it is the best looking Lambo yet. Saw it in person at the Carmel Concorso. Very impressive.

Don't like the looks although it does look a little better in reality than pics will show. Seems a car that will be very colour conscious due to its apparent lack of curves. Very bland/bordering on ugly in certain view aspects, no suprise its of German design origin and to me it does have some A6 in it (ugh)...piech has a lot to answer for, leave the design of the fluffy bits to those who have an eye and flair for it (Italians) and the oily and electronic bits to the Germans.

The Diablo (I think the design wears its spoilers very well) or very early unspoilered Countach for me

I'm fond of the Countach and Miura but the Diablo was too much. The new Murcielago has some falts but is looks killer.

As a passionate driver (without a passionate sports car) i look forward to one day driving a lamborghini... especially the Murcielago, which is supposed to be ergonomically designed to be more of a joy to drive...

As for its appearance, i must concede i'm drawn into a world unlike any other whenever i see a picture... not as lucky as some of you, i've not yet been afforded the opportunity to see one, in person...

As for my favorite Lamborghini, i'd have to go with the '98 Diablo SV Roadster drop top... (without the painted "SV" letters on the sides, thank you...) anyone who thinks metal can't be sexy has never seen one of these...

It's an AWD Lambo engine & transmission.

Murcielago is GORGEOUS in person. There was a guy there with 2 (this one & a grey one) as well as a yellow 360 Spider. All with Florida plates & all covered with bugs.

I have to admit William that I took am a sucker for those big wings, a lambo needs one imho and the Murcielago would be a lot nicer with one of them instead of that electro-porsche wing in the back.

William...got a big kick out of the "BIG Honking wing" line -- as did my wife when I told her about it at dinner -- that was hilarious! We finally were fortunate to see a Murcie "in the flesh" at the Mt. Dora show recently, and concur that it needs one of those!

Well I'll have to ammend myself here :-) since I just returned from an Italian tour including the Lambo factory I have revised my attitude & I like the Murcielago a lot more tho it still needs a BIG Honking wing like my Countach. I was able to tell the President of Lambo that I wanted a BIG Honking wing & he fessed up that they r looking into it. There r cool people at Lambo these days :-)

The Murcielago definately has some Audi (read German) influence, but while they left the design pretty clean and straightforward, they left room to sculpt and perfect that design probably over the coming years. The biggest improvement is in it's drivability. The cabin is snug, tight, doesn't rattle or feel cheap. The guages are better positioned, the steering is direct and tight with good road feel and the clutch and transmission are light years ahead of it's predecessor. Lamborghini did retain the raunchyness in this car. Plenty of chain and cam noise and terrific exhaust note, but now you don't have to be a body builder to drive it.

Ben - thanks.

And BTW, I noticed the Lambo M. was going down Mopac last night between 12 and 1am. Odd.. I still don't like it. Its different! But.. its just not as smooth as the Diablo. Perhaps time and the "Edge" look will work its way into my tastes, but to me, the edge look should stay in cars that I'd rather not have: Avalanche, Mustang, etc.

I've seen the yellow Murcielago here in Austin too. They guy driving it looked an awful lot like Michael Dell...
BretM (Bretm)
Posted on Wednesday, January 09, 2002 - 9:57 am:

Get this, it was designed by a guy named Luc Dockerwolke. LOL. No wonder it has such a kraut design with all those soft curves, kind of like an Audi on steroids (no surprise). Dockerwolke, that inspires me to think of greats like Pininfarina, Farina, Zagato, Vignale, right... I don't care how nice it is, I just can't like it. A quote (loosely) from a Ferrari and Lambo owner in C&D this month: "The Ferrari is like the nice girl that you take home to mom and dad. The Lamborghini is the wild slut that you sleep with on the side." I'm sorry Audi, but this is no wild slut when compared to the Countach and Diablo.

there's a new Yellow Murcielago here in Austin, TX - know of anyone who took delivery that quickly?

I don't like it, I still love the Diablo lines and curves. It will take me a while to get used to the type of design that was probably inspired by the Chevy Avalanche and Pontiac Aztec (or should I say Ponticrap Ass-tech?).

I have the new R&T aswell. That 550 is one heck of a looker. But for the sticker price I would take something else thank you. I love those carbon fiber w/ leather seats though. Looks the part, for sure! Pure Italian GT.

The new Murcielago is great. What I would spent 550 drop top cash on. Both are heavy beasts but the Audifed Lamborghini has that true supercar preformance every kid my age dreams of. :)

I love it, the styling does look sort of deliberate, function before form and not aggressive, unlike the later Countach's and the whole model run for the Diablos. On the other hand, I still like the Diablo SE. Overall, the car looks most menacing from the back with those bazooka sized exhaust outlets
Dave L (Davel)
Posted on Tuesday, October 23, 2001 - 9:42 pm:

Looks like a neat car. Evolutionary in styling versus a revolution that was the Countach :) But I will say this. Last Sunday I had the pure pleasure of driving a very nice 2500 mile 98 Diablo SV here. OH MY what a complete and total rush and an amazingly easy car to drive. If I was a man with the means I would buy one. Great paint, flawless interior lovely Italian V12 sounds and 535 HP!! Super William what do you think? I was more than impressed like flying the FA-18d on the ground!!
Carl Gustaf Landin (Gustaf)
Posted on Friday, September 28, 2001 - 9:23 am:

I have found that pictures seldom do cars of this type any justice. I think that the new design is excellent, especially the rear with its twin pipes and gorgeous light clusters. I think that it would still be an event to see it on the street. I just hope it sounds as aggressive as the outgoing Diablo.

I agree with you Peter, the Countach first prototype was the prettiest one. The last Diablo (VT 6.0) was also the nicest one with its clean unspoilt lines without any wings.
BretM (Bretm)
Posted on Monday, September 24, 2001 - 8:00 pm:

Something about it is unLambo. You're so used to seeing such a wild car all the way from the Miura, Jalpa, Countach, and Diablo. This thing just seems mundane compared to them. Not that it matters, but the average person would never pick it out on the street and be like damn look at that lamborghini. It seems more like a small Italian exotic manufacturer more than the replacement for the Diablo.
'75 308 GT4 (Peter)
Posted on Saturday, September 22, 2001 - 2:54 am:

"The Times They Are A Changing...".

I like it better than the Diablo. The Diablo looked fat right in the very beginning and with every subsequent evolution, they kept adding wings here and scoops there. Every attempt at the front bumper never changed its thick, blank look. Just add-ons.

This car reminds me of the prototype Countach LP500. That car was so clean and pure. The lines on the Murcielago echo that.

You must remember that the first generation Ferrari 456 had a speed-controlled wing under the rear bumper (The latest 456M has a fixed-wing).
William H (Countachxx)
Posted on Friday, September 21, 2001 - 10:08 am:

I'm a bit disappointed, the design is too tame & too german. Piech, Pres of VW hired a German to design it, 1st mistake. Lambos r about Big wings & Big attitude. These crappy little electric wings that go up & down may b fine for a Porsche, Audi, or Beetle but Absolutely DO NOT have any place on Lambos flagship
