Peter, S/N 3 indeed had a different body shape. Of this car very few pics exist because it was finished just in time for the Mille Miglia. These two are the only ones. There are more pics of after the crash. This is also the reason why nobody can tell what the car looked like, especially from the rear. I also show you a pic of how #2 was found in the car lot in 1983. It is the car in the left upper part of the pic.

Thanks for the additional article Thomas and excellent pictures Boudewijn! Concerning car #1, did it carry the same body shape/style as this one? |

Another article & pics - all credited to one individual. http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/frame.mv?file=car.mv&num=1729 [After a bit of research on other articles] My understanding is that this took the two third place finishes in the Mille Miglia of 1949 and 1950 (driven by Fangio and Zanardi in '50), and the 1950 Targa Florio victory. Is this correct? Stunning car & well done summary and photos, Boudewijn. |

The Alfa Romeo Competizione is a rare breed. Only 3 were made: S/N's 920001, 920002 and 920003. The first participated in the Mille Miglia 1948 with Sanesi and crashed out. It received a new body from the factory. The wherabouts today are not known. S/N 920003 originally was just a rolling chassis and received a Touring body in 1950. It was named the 6C 3000 C50 because of its experimental 3 litre engine. It took part in the 1950 Mille Miglia and again crashed out with Sanesi at the wheel. The car was a total loss and was discarded by the factory. The engine survives in the Alfa Museum. The car I saw at the "Concours het Loo" is S/N 920002. Originally it was sold to Franco Rol, a well known privateer driver. It finished a credible 3rd place overall in the 1949 Mille Miglia. For years the car hang about in a car cemetery 100 km south-east of Paris. The cemetery was "discovered" in 1983 and this car was rediscovered. Today being restored it is a beautiful monument of the past.
