Troy, I would say the 6000 figure is probably about right for US cars. Hard to say really, as DeTomaso did not keep good records of their US sold cars, and Ford is not forthcoming on allowing access to their Pantera records. And I would have no real guess on remaining stock Panteras. Ben, did the tube frame Pantera you refer to, belong to Dennis Quella of Colorado? If so, that is one mean machine. Full on race car. Warren, Panteras can range from $20K to $100K depending on year, model, rarity, etc. Having said that, you can pick up a average driver for $25K but the nicer ones start at around $30K and go up. A nice mid 1980's GT5-S would be about $50K. |

I've seen a 540cid, 13.5:1 compression, tube framed Pantara that would do a pretty good job on an F355 850bhp will do that. Stock for stock, the 355 wins, and not by a little. |

My digital camera is on the fritz, so I scanned in an old pic from '89. The only differences are (well, different house too) new tires: 305/50-15s in back and 245/50-15s in front.

Not really Mitch, even if it helped a few tenths in the 1/4, it wont change their 100mph trap time, compared to the 355's 110mph. |

A 1971 Pantera on 1971 tires is a 14 sec car, but a 1971 Pantera on modern max-performance or r-compound or drag racing rubber is a different story entirely! Tires do make at least this much difference. |

I believe that they made about 6000 Panteras for the U.S. market. Out of those how many would you say are stock. |

I think you would actually be surprised at the number of Panteras that are not modified. I think we all see modified Panteras so much because those are typically the ones that get driven a lot, and are involved in the clubs. But there are a lot of Panteras just sitting out there somewhere, that aren't driven regularly, if at all, and are still bone stock. We just never see them. |

I would say if you took 10 Panteras at random 8 would be modified. In the Pantera community it is accepted to modify a car. |

Are there any stock Panteras any more? I have seen over a dozen in the last two years, and they were all modified quite extensively, some were practically race cars! :-) |

1 second in the 1/4 is a huge difference. Night and day. Means the 355 would be many bus lengths ahead. No doubt a modded Pantera could keep up with or beat a 355. |

A 355 is 13sec in the 1/4 mile, a stock '71 Pantera is 14sec, not much 'kill' there. So all these years later, and it's got 1 second on it? Still doesn't matter, most of the Panteras are modded and won't have any trouble keeping up with a 355, if not spanking it, WITH a 30 year old, carb'd motor. |

Well, I don't care what Road and Track says. I like Matt, have gone toe-to-toe with 355s in my STOCK Pantera and have stayed with them up to a point. It's still not "KILL" and I reiterate its all done in a THIRTY year old car. |

Im sorry, but a stock Pantera is a 14 second 1/4 mile at just 100Mph car, while the 355 can pull high 12's at about 110mph. Thats KILL. |

I'm with Matt. I'd say close, but not even. Not kill like allan says. Still, not too bad for a THIRTY year old car. |

BTW, that bsmotoring.com site is wrong. The GT5 was not produced in 1974, not until mutch later. Elvis also did not own a GT5, but just a regular Pantera (you can see it at: http://www.panteracars.com/elvis1001.htm). It is right that Panteras will supposedly get light on the front end if not spoiler is not attached. Once that is done, it's not supposed to be a problem at all, with the modded ones reaching 200mph. |

I have a friend in Tulsa with a '97 355. He and I both got on it one time, he in his 355, I in my Pantera. I probably shocked the hell out of him, that my 30 year old car was able to keep up. Was I beating him? No, he was slowly pulling away from me. Once we reach 130mph, I let off. Come to find out months later, I had a bad cam (cam gear bad, and two flat lobes). I'd like to go for a rematch! Put it this way, a stock Pantera, no, I will say it is not faster 0-60 or top end than a 355. But with some minor mods, it sure could. |

Then and Now comparisons of various cars. http://www.bsmotoring.com/2003/jul19_1.htm In the 2nd summary, Pantera vs. Jaguar S-Type R. Note the Ford GT 40 mk III vs. Volvo S60R ass-whoopin'. Ferrari's aren't mentioned, but it's safe to say (to put it mildly) you answered correctly. |

A friend of mine says his Pantera is faster than a 355. I told him that a Pantera was a fast for it's time but can not compete with todays exotics. |
