My daily driver is an 83 X. Yeah, it's a POS, but I'm in college, footin' the bill, and I'm flat ass broke.

But I love italian, and the car is fun to drive. I get 33 mpg, and the mechanics are fine. It's zippy as hell, although slow as a dog. The suspension is pretty fun, too. I've taken 90 degree turns at 40 mph and the tires don't even squeal.

I bought it for 1000 bux a year ago. I've put nearly 10,000 miles on it, and I've had to replace almost 1000 bux worth of parts. No bad, considering the parts I replaced were nearly 20 years old with 110,000 miles on them.

It's fun and unique. It's no 308/328, and you won't pimp any ho in it, but it's fun none the less.

Hi Rob. I had 3 diffrent X's. Loved them reliability greatly improved when bertone took over starting in 83 they made something like 180 improvements if i recall over earlier. Parts r very cheap. With modern tires a very fun disposable car.

It was just more to find a car I could work on. However, it will be another year or so before I even have a place to work on it, maybe by then I can just get a Ferrari in need of some love.

Since I posted that message over a year ago I bought my race car, which is giving me my current fix for working on cars.

Rob, You will be disapointed.
There is nothing to compare between 328 and X1/9.
It is a slow, very light, bad brakes etc.
The exaust sound is so ridiculous compared with F engines

Ah the dreaded rust! Be careful on these as the cooling system uses the sills to carry coolant! Check also rear lower suspension bushings/balljoints, if they're gone the whole unit must be replaced. Rear brake calipers are unique to the car and expensive to replace/rebuild. Just like 308's handbrakes are useless. Cambelts should be changed every 36000mi. The rest of the motor is strong. Problems with fuel starvation not from cornering (like 308's) but from engine heat. Special fans and ducting supplied cooling air to the carbs, so better to look for latter FI cars. Weak syncros typical, especially jumping out of reverse.

Places like Bayless, Bruce's Parts Bin and International Auto sell high performance parts to help the asphyxiated US cars keep up with today's traffic. Besides, it'll make you feel like driving a mini Ferrari (but don't spend thousands trying to turn one into a Ferrari!).

I've started looking around and am amazed that I can get great condition X1/9's for the price of a good service on the 328. I've even been seeing that they share some of the same parts. I think my strategy will be to find a rust free good running one that can use some work. This will be good experience for me and there isn't much financial risk when I mess stuff up.

Let me know if you have any advice.
