Dan, that's why the GT4 out-sold the other Italian 2+2 "middies" (Urraco & Merak).

The rear seats are an absolute joke on a Merak, not only can you not put people back there, but you can't even put stuff there as well.

But it is one sweet shape though...

That would be why I have an Indy and not a Bora. The Merak is roomy compared to a Bora. The Indy is much more comfortable.

I think the 308GT4 is a good value for the money.

Good Luck

asthetically meraks were always my favorite car, especially the early ones with european bumpers and flat rear hood. i have looked at and test drove several meraks over the last 6 months, waiting for the right one to buy. then for kicks last week tried a 1978 ferrari 308 gt4 dino...wow...wound up buying it on the spot...

i am about 6'2" the merak has no head room for me and visibility is low. the engine compartment extends into the cab in an unsightly hump and overall the cab is very unrefined. (and the brakes take some getting used to)

the gt4 however fits me like a glove head room to spare, amazing visibility and no clausterphobic feelings, even has a scalloped back seat useable for stuff (not people). the cab interior and gauge layout is nicely refined. and then the performance was mind blowing.

i am not trying to playhate the merak as i still think they are one of the most beautiful cars ever. just that it is almost equal in price to the gt4 dino's which seem to me like a class above.

sincerely,

dan

I would look @ a 80SS rather. Of course the 80s are also not going to be under 10K. I have not seen a 75 for under 14K that was really in great condition. I have seen a couple of dogs, but the cost to get them into good shape would be prohibitive.

Wait a minute. I should clarify my previous post. I don't think Citroen put Maserati up for sale until the Spring of '75, so if the car is an early '75 it could be "Citroen". Late '75 would be a "true" Maserati. By the way, Citroen did not design the Merak engine. It was designed and built by Maserati. One of the reasons Citroen bought Maserati in the first place was to acquire the Maser V-6 for use in their "SM". The Citroen contribution to the early Meraks and Boras was mostly with the complex hydraulic systems and odd-ball looking interior design. The later cars ditched the French hydraulics and had a traditional "Italian" (i.e. tasteful) interior. Another big reason for looking for a later car.

Erich, the '75 is post-citroen, and the SS is the one to buy. Just be VERY careful in checking out the car. Have someone truly knowlegable in Maseratis give it a complete going over before you think about buying it. Major repairs to these cars can be disasterously expensive. There is a huge latitude to the term "very good condition".

Sam:

I couldn't access your e-mail address so hopefully this will work. What about a 1975 SS? I recently found one in very good condition for under $10,000. It would primarily be a weekend car. Also, I found asking prices for '75, but what would one expect to pay? And does anyone know of a child's car seat which will fit in back? Thanks, Erich

Greg, I owned one for over ten years and just sold it a few months ago and would be happy to answer all questions. Do not get the early french, citroen models---if you see a large spare tire hump in the rear deck, run the other way. Do buy a late model SS...the car is amazing! Solid large trunk up front..nothing else on the road looks like it or ever will, yes parts are tough and expensive but they are avaiable. car is a blast solid, strong, nimble quiet 2+2 comfort you will never find in a Ferrari a great gearbox, very ez to work on and all for less than
$16K don't pay more! Do get the most complete original version you can and that will be tough but you will have the world calss road car for less than a Miata - all maseratis are sooooo... under valuaed and now they are owned by Ferrari and will be reintroduced to USA!

Finding Maseratis parts makes finding Ferrari parts seem like getting things for your Chevy, honestly. They're alright, my neighbor's (he's my age) grandfather had one, it was pretty cool I must admit, but I like the Ferrari much more. It's all about what your taste is really, but you are a brave man if you own one.

All I know is that under that beautiful Guigiaro skin lies a Citroën V-6. Hey, it looks like a Bora (with a REAL Maserati motor in it), but costs about half as much. Plus-two seats in the back that are totally useless (smaller than my GT4). Odd brake pedal system. Odd looking dashboard which thankfully got replaced with the Bora item with the SS model.

The SS model is the one to go for. Parts are VERY scarce. There are people brave enough to own one. A retired gentleman here in B.C. owns one, said he always wanted one for years. He just loves it. That's what counts.

Hi, I recently got interested in Meraks but don't know too much about them. Does anyone have any info on them or owns/owned one? Thanks.
