I highly recommend the tour of Bob Smith's Coachworks. The Pantera club toured there a couple of months ago, and it was a really great time. Bob is a true craftsman, and had some incredible cars that I no doubt will never have the chance to see again (we're talking like 1 of 4 cars and such). Great time.

Mainly because the officers don't need to be responsible. For instance, you hit somebody and kill them on the poker run. If that persons family finds out you were on a "rally" it automatically becomes a race.

While you may not sue the officers, that persons attorneys will sue everybody possible.

Why does there need to be insurance? I'm going for a drive in my car. Nobody made me do it, and I have friends doing it to. We're all going to the same places and anything that I do wrong is my fault.

Since it's a "driving" event we'll do this one under the FCA. You'll have to be a documented FCA member to participate because of insurance. I don't think there will be additional charges for this beyond your $120 or so yearly fee, but I'll check. I think the locations should be half way a suprise except for the organizers. Jim, I can let you know the few good routes and locations I know close to DFW. Some places may have to be "sponsor" locations to get prizes our of them. Any entry fee can go back into the awards. We'll do some trophies like what Tillman does for the karting events and then just fun prizes for everything else.

Jim,

An entrance fee is fine and normally expected for such events. There are some questions here though.

1) Does FCA insurance cover the event? We normally do our events under SCCA cover for insurance purposes.

2) If FCA is covering the insurance is there any additional cost to the club that needs to be passed on? Our normal cost for SCCA coverage is about $75.

Observations:

People would rather have a plaque or some other award than cheesy give certificates. Many of the clubs do gift certificates for dinner or Car places etc. We have found that people really like a trophy, and yes they are cheap you can get a nice trophy for less than $10.

It would be nice to get out of city traffic.

Just some thoughts..

I am currently putting together a list of stops, times etc. I will coordinate with the appropriate owners/mgrs.

It is harder than I thought it would be to plan routes though. Any suggestions on good roads to drive on? I mean Tollway for speed....any curves anywhere? Also do you want to drag race from stop 1 to stop 2 or take some casual routes along the way.

I know it is about the cars, but I like to see things too.

So I am open to suggestions so I can please the most people.

What about charging for participation? Most do this, but since it is our first one hate to discourage participation, but if we buy any prizes need some $$. What about a $10 entry fee?

A poker run is a great idea. We have done them before. The best thing to do is arrange stops with somebody like a Ice Cream place, store... if possible. Makes it a lot less work.

Rob,

Marci has been talking to Bob Smith about an event for MAFFIAcarClub & North Texas Jaguar Drivers club. The problem is that Bob is busy until fall. He is building a new house. The Bob Smith visit will have to be scheduled for October or so.

Don't worry Jim, if you organize it, someone will let you ride so you aren't tagged as a dork! You can ride w/ me if I don't have to bring along a wife/kid.

It might be fun to include stops at Ferrari places like FOD, Norwoods, etc. Oh, and Krispy Kreme!

Bob Smith is famous for restoring classic Ferraris, his shop is in Gainsville. He has done all the best models like 250 GTO's and LM's.

You can be in charge of the Poker Run and do it how you wish. I can help you out if you want. I don't know how others do it, but I was thinking something along the lines of...

Meet location #1 at 9am. Get first card and find out location #2. Each location will give you another card and tell you the next location. Another option is to give all the locations and let people map the way they want to pick up the cards. Even have 7-8 total locations and some may not choose to go all, but then they'll have less cards for the final prizes. The last location could finish off someplace for a late lunch. I was thinking maybe up to 200 miles total driving around the DFW area.

Any type of car could participate.

I would be happy to have a F1 party at my house. It is not a BIG OLE FANCY house though. Here is a link if you care.

http://www.schad.nu/

Who is Bob Smith?

I can start working on the Poker Run thing. However as I don't have a Ferrari "yet" can I ride with somebody so I don't feel like a dork?!?!

You said all day....do you really mean all day? Meet for breakfast, drive, lunch, drive, dinner/dance/beverages? Or should we do a breakfast til 2pm thing and the tough guys can stay out late or do a noon to 7 thing?

It will work best with everyone present all the time so whatever is agreeable.

Ok, I haven't heard back from FOD yet about having an FCA meeting there early January, so what if I propose the schedule and then we can discus it from here. Here's generally what I propose, from here we'll nail down exact dates and times...

-12 TBC Karting events already set for 2nd Tuesday of month at 7pm.
-Exotic Car Night every 3 months on Saturday evenings, unless we want to move around we'll continue at Carsons since they like us so much, good parking, and it's a fun place inside too (at night!).
-F1 watching parties for every Saturday night or Sunday noon live races. We'll by default have these at the M.A.T., but we can move around to other bars or house if we wish.
-At least one track weekend with The Driver's Edge at MSR.
-Poker Run in late Spring.
-Rally up to tour Bob Smith's.
-Norwood Dyno Day.
-Hopefully some type of casual concours.

After seeing the kart tracks Tim and Chris have I would love to. My driveway will be curvey anyway. There just won't be any runoff areas and those dang trees will hurt. Especially since every 10 laps you have to stop and slug a beer down.

DO NOT pre pay for the entire year b/c if they go under you get squat and will be in line with all other creditors.

For $1500 an hour times multiple events....we can build a track on robs land instead of his house!

There used to be some kind of indoor track near 635 and Miller Rd, but I never went in there. Tell him the old way stands, or we move on. If he's THAT busy on Tuesdays, we don't want to go anyway.

Trying to Be Closed, hahaha! Tanked Business Class...

I agree, I wouldn't give money like that to a risky totally unestablished business like that. I really don't know what all the local location options are, but a couple of years ago, I raced at another indoor facility in N. Richland Hills. Their carts were pretty cool, because they actually emitted noxious fumes and the kinds of noises reserved only for internal combusion engines. (I suppose I'd insert a smiley face here if I had a clue about how to do that)

It's obvious, look how expensive their building is and how little traffic they get. There's issues there, unless they get bought out by someone with money, I doubt they'll be around the entire year. I wouldn't give them a cent.

I'll be the bad guy if we want, I kinda like it sometimes. I would say $35 a head like earlier this year and we'll commit to the entire year. ...or else no go. How much are they going to be for walk ins? $50 for 3 races? Man, they are a sinking ship. If they don't agree, then tough, we'll go elsewhere or just be walk ins if the price goes back to the neighborhood of $35 for 3 races.

TBC... Trying to Be Closed.

Ok, here's an update.

They are raising the price to $800/hour, which would work out to $50+ per hour/per person at 15 people. Absolutely ridiculous, and I'm pretty sure that they're not going to be able to hold that price.

However, they also state that we can continue to have it at $35/person, if we book all of the events now. That's not really a problem, except they want a 10% deposit on _all_ the booking, and that's well over $600. They originally wanted 50%. Somehow I suspect they're having money problems.

I cannot and will not cover that. Suggestions? We don't have a chapter fund, so that's no solution.

I doubt if they get the much walk up traffic even on a good day. $1500 an hour is a joke. If they force that pricing, I give them 6 months before the building is vacant.

On a personal note, it appears that I will miss at least the first 3 months of the season as well as most of the DFW FCA events between January and March. I have been asked to move to NYC for 3 months to work on a big trial. Ah, the joys of being a new attorney. Nothing firm yet, but I have to committ by tommorrow and I think it is a good opportunity. I will just have to try to hook up with the NYC chatters sometime.

Rob,

Eddie was quoting $1500/hour (no typo) to rent the track. I just laughed at him and asked him if he really thought they were that busy on Tuesday nights. I also told him that we just were not going to pay that kind of price.

I don't think the owner will stick to that price. If he/she does, the walk-up business will be dead.

As I said, this is all preliminary.

I do like the thought of a weekend trip to Houston, especially if something was going on down there.

Just a heads up: I spoke with TBC today about our January event, and apparently they're under new ownership. The new owners are re-evaluating the pricing, and it may be significantly higher come February. I'll keep everyone informed, but the initial pricing numbers are just insane and I cannot see them being realistic.

January is not changed: $30/person. Call your friends to come out, this might be the last event. :-(

May 13
June 10

Fall Series:
