Jere Dunham, could you clarify on the 114 to Amarillo route? My maps show 114 terminating at Seymour, southwest of Wichita Falls, which is nowhere near Amarillo...maybe road merges, in which case, what's an alternate Hwy number?

Near Austin you can use the following strategy: heading south and/or west, take out your road map of the state of Texas, find all the roads with traffic and place an X over these roads. Find you starting point. Now pick a road without an X on it, and follow iit to the end, then find the shortest distance to another road without an X on it and head in that direction.

I have at least 15 different routes from my garage to my garage in Lost Creek that are between 150 and 250 miles in length that don't have me on a road with traffic more than 10 total minutes for the entire trip! (I found most of these on my Motorcycle) Several have been mentioned above, however more follow:

Hamilton pool (3238) to 962 to 281 to 972 to 71 to 2147 to Marble falls to 1431 to 'lime creek road'
1431 (although they ruined it by straighten it)
Willow City Loop
281 to Sandy to 290 to 1623 to Blanco
Blanco to 1623 to 1888 to Luchenbach
There is a road from Blanco to Comfort thats nice
Blanco to Wimberly either 2325 to 167 or Devils Backbone
Wimberly 3237 to 150 to Driftwood to Ben Mcullough (1826)

I live right out in that area and once you get past 2499 it's smooth sailing, hence why I see hundreds (literally) of motorcycle and bicycle riders on the weekends - can't beat it.

407 used to be a great drive, but with the expansion out there in Argyle the whole way is blocked with SUVs and other slowpokes.

If you do make the drive (which is beautiful), you can swing up through Denton instead of heading out to 35W. There's a turn off at a gas station, and if you head straight instead of turning left you eventually end up on Fort Worth Drive in Denton.

There's some nice drives west of 35W and also up in the Krum/Sanger area. I'll have to go scouting again to get actual road numbers.

A nice drive that isn't too far out of the immediate DFW area is taking 35E to exit 407 and head West. 407 is a small two lane farm to market road, which can be taken all the way to 35W. Alot of nice roads that curve. Also, another suggestion is to take Copper Canyon off of 407 and head North - GEORGEOS!!! Small two lane road with trees lining the entire drive. Check it out on Mapquest.com or Mapsco.

The Willow City Loop just outside of Fredericksburg. (keep an eye out for stray cows and low water crossings)

I'll second the vote for RR2222 west of Austin.
As Jesse Dayton and the Road Kings say it on "Live from the Satellite Lounge":

"It's got hills and curves, just like you.
Baby that's all I need"
Reverend Horton Heat

Check it out next time ya need some road tunes.

I have taken the Lotus a few times from Boerne to Fredericksburg, via Luckenbach, on 1376. Fun road - start with Riverwalk in San Antone, winery stop on the way to Luckenbach, take in a little music and Lone Star, then hit the micro brews in Fredericksburg. There are plenty of roads from there to continue on...

If anyone knows a good route from downtown Dallas to Muenster, let me know. I'll be heading up there this weekend for the Germanfest.

I think you'll enjoy parts of the Poker Run, really don't have the time to get too far out of town, but it's a good route for what we have.

The MG club did quite a nice rally going North from Little Elm that was quite nice. Some really nice twisty roads.

Evan, I have a 'drive' that goes from Allen to the west and north. I'll see if I can dig it up.

I've been a fan of highway 377 to Grandbury. from there you can take 67 to Cleburn. Also west of Weatherford, Mineral Wells is a nice drive.

One that most people overlook is 114 between Bridgeport and Amarillo. About 60 miles east of Amarillo on 114 are some wonderful switchbacks into canyons and over bluffs and the traffic is not bad.

What are the best backroads for performance or scenic driving, mostly around Dallas or Austin?
