Rob,

I think that would be a good idea to do an alternate dinner once a month or so during the week. It's easier to visit at a little quieter venue, plus you get a date-credit with the wife, and you can go out for a bit of partying afterwards. If you're into that kind of thing.

I really enjoyed the event-the martini(s) weren't bad either. It was nice to visit with the Lamborghini of Dallas guys.I think they are going to be very receptive to providing great service, even to us lowly F-car owners.

Hey Rob,

Yep, mine was the Speed Yellow 996 (latest model) twin turbo, or at least it says that in my Porsche 101 handbook. ;) Phenomenally capable (and fast) car. So much so, it can seem tame. My only real complaint is lack of exhaust note with stock setup, but that can be cured aftermarket. I have a Boxster, also, which is actually a more fun/tossable car, if less blindingly fast.

If we can't get together on the track, maybe we can get the PCA/FCA folks together at a restaurant. Sure is nice to look at something besides the same old cars time and time again. :-)

Again, enjoyed it. Thanks.

I did get to talk to Sam on Saturday and his mechanic has a '84 308QV for sale. But, I would have to sell the E55 and buy a beater daily driver before I could go after an F-car.

Jim,

Which Maserati?

The Red late model Spyder belongs to a fellow out of Austin.

The 67 Ghibli belongs to a guy in Dallas. He was told about the event by friends.

Both car were pretty much perfect.

Hill, it was nice meeting you, sorry I couldn't hang around and talk longer. By the time I made the rounds it was 8:30 and I only had one drink in me and no food! Rob gets cranky.

I wanted to get a closer look at your car. Was yours the hot yellow 996? That's a turbo, right? I need to take Porsche 101.

The Yellow 328 is another almost perfect car, like Bob's. Give me a second and I'll remember their name. They're not FerrariChat.com users. They were the couple at the end of the table. Rodney and Marci will know them. Sam is the one who had a 308 and just got the 456.

Kevin Doukas talked about wanting to change locations, where as others talked about leaving it in the same spot. We can leave ECN in the same spot, but do some "dinners" now and then at other locales. Whatcha think?

Hey Rob, Nice meeting you. Took off for dinner down in Dallas, but was nice to "kick tires" for a while. And the building provided the perfect amount of shade to keep it from getting too hot.

As a Porsche owner, it was nice to look at some other cars for a change.

Until next time.

Sorry I couldn't make it. I had a detail job that lasted until ~300PM. When my fiance got home from riding (she shows horses), she wanted to see "Finding Nemo" at the movies. Let's just say she can be real...persuasive. The movie was pretty darn good, though!

I hope I can make the next one.

Here are a couple of pictures I took as well. I'd never seen a Ghibli before, so I took one of it.

As for the chicky-snacks, they unfortunately were not wearing Chicky Snack nametags. I mean how embarassing if it would have been to hit on Rob's wife who I only met later that night?

Real good time. My voice toast from yelling over the music late last night, but worth it.

The Fiero/512 conglomeration kit was a funny experience. That guy couldn't get away from Rob fast enough, hehe.

Actually a better turnout than I expected with the IRL race going on. It about tied our Ferrari record count, but we had more variety of other cars and a large total head count. Thanks to Stephanie and Susan for all the "chickie snacks". A total of 6 beautiful single women. All the single guys were sitting at one end of the table and the girls on the other end. Pretty funny. We set a record too for how late we stayed. Greg Brendel and Emily, Ron and Stephanie, Matt Bradly, other Matt, Jennie and I left 1:30am or so.

Ferraris...

365 2+2
(2) 308's
(3) 328's
(2) 348's
512 TR
(2) 360's
456
550

The variety...

(2) Panteras
(2) Lotus
NSX
(2+) Porsches
Masserati

Funniest of the nite was this nice looking white something or another that pulled up. Looked kinda like a 308, but had side intakes and rear bonnet like a BB. It had a sunroof! Looked good, but we didn't know what it was. I went over to the owner and he saw my FCA red shirt and he tried to get away, but I snagged him long enough to get "Fiero" out of him. I'm sure he was horrified to see the real Ferraris outside. Although by that late there were only about 3-4 of our Ferraris left. It was really a neat looking car, even though it wasn't a Ferrari.

Yes, 911's have just dominated GT racing the past few years. Factory support, inexpensive pre built car, and competitive. The factory even has it's own drivers that they loan out to privatiers. Wish Ferrari did more of this, just like the good ole days.

As the president of the FCA DFW we can't have timed FCA competitive track events. Al browses FC too. :-)

As a soon to be member of MSR and not affiliated with FCA we should all "hang" out some day. AMB transponders and hot lap timers, that would be fun.

Rob,

Not even "pseudo" timed events with Hot Lap timers in each car and such? Everyone makes DE's into "personal" timed events even though insurance prevents the club from officially capturing them.

I guess we are getting a little gray, but track events in general are very gray with respect to insurance anyway, right?

Just dreamin, I 'spose. :-) I am just happy to see 360s and 550s getting into the act in ALMS, etc. Was getting tired of seeing 911s race 911s in GT class...

Hill, LOL, I know that and you know that, but any head to head comparison is pretty dumb for that matter. "360 Killer" and "4RE ETR".

Kevin Doukas (PCA & FCA) wanted to set up a Porsche vs. Ferrari match at MSR. We can't do timed events through the FCA though.

Challenge cars really don't run more HP than stock, so any Porsche Cup car with half a driver can man handle a Challenge car. Now promise not to bring Steve Hill out. That boy can drive!

I wish I had some hard statistics, but my guess at the distribution of exotic car owners (one car family only, not a collection) would be...

40% Porsche
30% Vipers
5% Ferrari
5% Lotus
1% Lamborghini
1% Pantera

Yes, I know it doesn't add up to 100%, but basically I think everyone will agree with my numbers. I think this is reason there's so much unqualified "noise". Talk to the actual Ferrari owners and don't learn about Ferraris from the 95% that don't know.

No doubt a Ferrari is more expensive per mile to maintain than a Porsche or Viper. I would also be more secure driving a Porsche or Viper as a daily driver. Historically Ferrari also has a much better resale. Many factors and if you are a one sports car family and it needs to be a daily driver, I wouldn't recomend a Ferrari. I would pick a Porsche or something like a 55 SL.

Only thing I'm defending against is the 95% of noise coming from non Ferrari owners trying to take shots at the "ultimate comparisson" Ferrari about reliability or performance.

"360 Killer", "4RE ETR" (Viper Club local prez), and etc... There's a reason manufacturers and other exotic owners compare against one marquee. We're flattered. :-) I never claim and it's hard to find many Ferrari owners claiming to be the fastest, most reliable, or best bang for the buck.

Re: challenge car

Hey Rob, It is never fair to compare a race car to a street car. You know that. Plus, we all also know the driver makes the real difference anyway.

That's it! We need our own Porsche - Ferrari Challenge out at MSR! Would that be amazing or what? :-)

Hey Dario,

Definitely, come on out.

I love all great cars. And your concerns are simliar to mine...Porsche TT is a supercar I can buy and drive and not have to dump a ton of money into continuously. I asked an FoD salesman about taking a 348/355 to the track and he said "no problem, as long as you bring it in for a service after every track visit..." Huh? I am sure the service would be a reasonable price. On the TT, I can do all the usual track-support servicing myself (tires, oil, pads, rotors, etc) at a somewhat acceptable price. I guess I am not sure that would be the case, especially for an out of warranty car like a 348 or 355. Disclaimer: All I know of Ferrari reliability is admittedly heresay. I have no first hand experience.

Plus, Boardwalk gives me a loaner to drive every time I need to come in with either the Boxster or the TT. Could FoD do that? There are lots of little things like that which make ownership more or less user friendly...

As for performance, a stock TT is wicked quick, but for very reasonable money, it can be made to produce gobs more RELIABLE horsepower, making it a total monster.

But a 360 is about as sexy as sexy gets, so there you go.

Looking forward to Saturday night! :-)

I think that's every non owners scare and rightly so. The market for the new Ferraris is different than for the older ones. It's my experience (doing this dumb site for 2.5 years and seeing 200k+ messages) that any used Ferrari typical turns into less maintenance than the buyer expected, but new Ferraris are bought by those that expect the same reliability as their Porsche and Mercedes. I'm not saying it wouldn't be great if Ferrari was that reliable, but that's the price you pay for having a car you don't see every day. I see a 996 turbo at least twice a week. With an exotic car comes the good and bad. You can't treat it like your VW.

My 1986 328 has been far less expensive and trouble free than my 1993 BMW 325is.

There are Ferrari enthusiasts and there are non Ferrari enthusiasts.

No Rob,

Not worried about standard service issues, worried about buying a 360 and having is sit in a shop for months at a time, horror stories of 360's brand new still in the shop, this is what I've gathered from THIS board ... for 1.25 years I've driven the Porsche TT from new and racked up 33,000 trouble free miles, and if there was anything minor it was quick in and quick out for service ... money is not an issue I just want to be able to drive the car ... when competition gets tough and Ferrari realises there market segment will have options (Gallardo), the whole prestige and beauty of the car will fall short to it's reliablity however, I will admit I love a Ferrari and its presence so as soon as I buy a bigger house I will add a Ferrari to the stable, this way WHEN it goes in for service I will have another supercar to drive? Until then only have room for the one that doesn't go limp when I need it ...

WHAT A WASTE!

Reliability issues? $120k car and you're worried about a $7k major service every 30,000 miles on a 360? I think the depreciation alone would cover the maintenance variance.

BTW, I really don't know what it costs to maintain a 996 Turbo. My guess is 20k would be about $1,000 and the 40k maybe $2,000?

We know you can kill a 360. Can you kill a 355 Challenge? My first time out in it and in less than a lap this Turbo went from horizon to rear view...

Great, we'll still have a good turnout, even though several are going to IRL. I promise I won't make the mistake next year.

Jerry will be at the IRL so it looks like I will bring the Ferrari and one of my girlfriends.

Jason, we usually have 12-14 Ferraris. Who knows this time around with the IRL race and other summer activities. Matt and I will at least be there! I would expect at least 10.

I won't take the challenge car to Carsons. If Matt and I run MSR on Saturday, you can come out and watch and get some rides. I might not even have the car by then and I know I won't have the passenger seat, but I can give you rides in my street car.

We may end up doing the Maffia club rally vs. MSR. Don't worry about seeing the car, as much as I'll be at TWS you'll probably get sick of all the times you'll see it.

Hmm, I swore I checked the TMS schedule when I set this date up, but I guess not. The IRL races have been my favorite the past few years. Oh well, still one more IRL race this year. I'm sure we'll loose a couple because of this. Greg has season tickets.

It's also the Saturday night after I get home from vacation. Not sure how I'm going to get a kitchen pass after being gone for a week.

I don't mean to speak for Rob, but I can't imagine how he'll get the challenge there, it's not street legal. I guess he might trailer it, but that seems like a lot of work just to let people look at it.

Rob,

How many cars you got coming? And if I make it, would we be able to go check out the challenge?

Matt, want to do this if we don't go to MSR? Or would you rather do the Maffia event besides MSR anyway?

When: Saturday, June 7, 6pm.

Where: Carsons Palace
17727 Dallas Pkwy.
Suite #150
Dallas, TX 75287
972.931.9111
http://www.carsonspalace.com/

What: DFW Exotic Car Nights #4. Mingle among the cars at 6pm for an hour or so and then we'll go inside for a sit down dinner. Die hards will stay late into the night dancing to the live band.

Over 12 Ferraris attended each of the first three events. Carsons is very Ferrari friendly as we'll get the first few rows for parking and they'll provide security the entire night. The word has got out what a fun event this is. Here are some pics from the first three events...

Everyone, member of FCA or not is welcome, a Ferrari of course is not required. We're also having a special guest appearance from "The Don" in from Cali driving a 355 Spider for the weekend.

Thanks,
rob
