Dale,

No idea yet. He is currently at his home in Aspen and I do not know when he is coming back. I will try to set it up with him. I will get back to everyone.

I received word from my friend yesterday that as of this Friday he will be getting a new Enzo. He said he called FoD looking for me to help him locate one. Since I was no longer there and I had not contacted him yet to let him know where I am now, he contacted the man who arranged purchase of his McLaren and received his help in locating one. I e-mailed him to see if he kept his McLaren or not and have not heard back. It would be like him to keep both but I do not know if he did.

Evan,
The car in Waxahachie is not in Waxahachie, it is in McKinney. I know who you are talking about and he bought his own car. I know nothing of a car in Austin.

The Mclaren F1 has always been my dream car... the ultimate. The 360's similarity to the F1 but much smaller price tag is why I own the 360.

I think the only photos of our European vacation that have me in it is when we walked by the Mclaren F1 window shopping in London and I handed my wife the camera.

I'm amazed that there are four of them in Texas!!

Oh, and I'll happily drive my 360 to wherever for a ride in one!

James,
The one in Waxahatchie was owned by the race car driver (won't name him) that was also a client of FoD. From what I understand, the car was a gift from his race team owner. The one in Austin, I believe, was owned by a dot-com guy. A few of my friends at UT said the car was around Austin for a while, but they haven't seen it since. The guy may have sold it.

Anyhow, I'd love to see the F1 again. I'll certainly make the trip if the option is available.

Serious. He is that good a friend. I'll tell you what. I will call and see if he is receptive to a group coming out. I will let you know what he says.

errr, wow. Seriously? I'd drive the 328 to Midland for that in a heartbeat.

Nick,

I managed the BMW dealership in Odessa for eight years so I know all the areas you speak of very well. The Davis Mountains trip is a good one. This is the area where the high speed runs were made by the Corvette guys who had upped the hp in their cars to about 1000.

The Confederate Air Force had to change their name due to politics but it is still the CAF (Commemorative Air Force) and the fall WW2 re-enactment is a very good show.

If I could be of any assistance from this end, let me know. I have a good number of contacts out there.

Let me know if that west Texas trip happens. I used to live out in El Paso and I recently had my 355 transported out there, but I then drove it back, which I have to say was a blast. I stayed in a town I already knew about called Ft. Davis, that is just south and a little more west. It has some great winding roads and views that are awesome. As the name says, there is an old Calvary fort there as well as the McDonald Observatory.

Midland also has the Confederate Air Force Museum.

Chad,

I got him to autograph my copy of the R&T you have. I will have to tell you some of the stories about him. About how he bought his son a Diablo VT to go to college in(Texas Tech) when the school said his big-block supercharged Chevrolet Beretta pro street car made too much noise and disrupted classes. And to top it off, the son majored in ranch management and would pull up to the ranch management office in the Diablo and park up among the dualie, crew cab, diesel pickups of all the other ranch management majors. Made for an interesting site.

Evan,
I did not know of the ones in Austin and Waxahachie. I only knew of the ones in Midland and McKinney. Any idea who owns the ones in Austin and Waxahachie???

Chad,

If you were to go out to Midland, I know he would let you go for a ride in it and possibly even drive it. I know of one 17 year old whose dad was looking at the car when the owner walked up. The dad to him how much his son loved McLarens and had never actually seen one. The owner had the dad go get his son and then let the dad drive the car around a few blocks and then surprise the son by pulling over and letting him drive the three blocks back to the parking lot. I bet that 17 year old will remember that forever.

If maybe the FC guys wanted to set up a weekend road trip out to west Texas, I would be willing to attempt to set up a meeting and drive of the F1 if possible. It takes about 5 hours to get to Midland, straight out I-20.

James,
I was at FoD (by luck) when he brought the car to let an F50 owner drive it, back about 1997. I thought his garage opener was some rare radar detector, since I've never seen a 10-car garage remote!

As far as I know, there's 3 in Texas; Midland, Austin, and Waxahatchie.

funny story; i went to london and amsterdamn back in 95' for world jamboree with scouts, i dont know where in the uk we went, it was a big place that had 100's of cars on displayed. well there it was a yellow mclaren, with the doors open. i was with other fellow scouters and they were like lets move on, and i was like 'do yall know what this is, how fast it goes, how much it cost, or how rare it is. of course they didnt know or care. i am not much of a picture person but i did fill up a disposible camera full of the car. i was in love, didnt care about anything else. and to date it is the closest i have ever come to one.

james you are my hero, to think that there are like less than a thousand people that have ever had the oppertunity to drive one, you have had. just to be able to ride in one, hmmmm hmmm. and i have read the story in road & track like 5 times and is one that i have saved. i was hoping or i just figured the car was in dallas, but never saw one and no one that knows what it is had ever seen one.
on my coffee table i have a great detailed book on the planning and making of the car along with a chrome plated f-1 on top of it.
man i could go on and on about this car...but i got finals tomorrow, and with add adult test i took last night from the off topic section that tell me i get distracted easily...this must be what it meant
James if your mclaren friend ever needs someone to wash or just look his car...i am the man for the job.....i wouldnt even need to be paid

but seriously i need to get back to studing

Evan,

It's going pretty well. Thanks for asking.

It does not surprise me that a lot of people do not know what the McLaren F1 is. You see so very few of them. I showed you the pictures while you were at FOD didn't I?

James, that's surprising that the kid didn't recognize a McLaren yet he had access to a sports car. You would think they knew the hierachy of exotics.

BTW, how is Audi?

Chad,

That's the one. I believe the quote said "belongs to a gentleman from Texas who prefers to remain annonymous".

He has been a friend for a long time. He flies helicopters, rides dirt bikes, races prostock and loves his cars. He takes the car to charity events and gives rides in it and lets others drive it.

He is a real cool guy. You would really like him.

Jim,

I have a friend out in West Texas who owns a McLaren F1. Several years ago he came to town to show me the car and told me, "Have fun and if you are going to let someone else drive it just go with them". Well, duh!! I had the car for three days and put 171 miles on it. I have never had so much fun in a car. It was really surprising how many people who did not know what it was and thought it was a kit. I had one 20 year old actually say "Hey old man, what did you do to your NSX to get it to run so fast"? Well, this is one "old man" who ate that kids lunch in a big way. He was driving his dad's new 911 C2.

I count about 60 there in the left pic. At $300k at piece, that's $18m all together, or same as two 250 GTO's.

With my luck, that would be the day that a proud F40 owner would throw me the keys and say, "Go for a spin, drive it as fast as you want. It's the red one."
