"Then, I passed by FoH, and the guys started to talk to me into changing the fuel lines (fire hazard). All the lines are original (41k miles, and 24 years), and deemed in good shape during the PPI. Is there a real danger there?"

Yes, get them changed.

"The water tem was most of the time around 200F, and went up to 220F when I started to do city stop and go. Is it normal?"

Yes!

"Oil temp didn't move much and stayed at the low end of the gauge, 140-150F. Is this normal?"

You have to run the snot out of these cars to get the oil temperature above 212dF. And since you want water vapor to leave the oil, you pretty much need to run the snot out of these cars now and again (hint, hint).

"I also did my 1st 360deg spin out, at low speed, which I am not too proud about. Slick tires, ignorance of the car reactions, linked to my rookieness in driving may have caused it... Will do better next time"

Get thee to a track and practice until the cars handling becomes second nature. The basic handling is so different that it can catch a novice quickly (and in a really bad way).

Mike,

What you are describing is a standard carburetor heat soak. This is very typical for older carbureted cars here in Texas and no big deal. You simply hold the gas pedal to the floor and crank until it starts. It's generally not a problem once it cools down a bit.

Mike, I would bring this all up in the tech section. All common with a newly purchased Ferrari.

My 308 came much quicker than expected and I took deliverly last week.

I took it for its 1st spin this week-end (50 miles or so). It is quite intimidating, since I heard all those horror story about older F-car reliability, and I kept checking gauges more than anything else.

Everything went OK, except that when I turned it off, I couldn't started over. I had to wait 5 minutes before it started, and since I am in Texas, was wondering if this is caused by hymidity and heat that create vapor lock. Any comments, suggestions to remediate?
Also, one light (orange, corner left of the dashboard, I don't remember now what it is for)went on after 15 min of driving, and went off 10 min after. Scary!

Then, I passed by FoH, and the guys started to talk to me into changing the fuel lines (fire hazard). All the lines are original (41k miles, and 24 years), and deemed in good shape during the PPI. Is there a real danger there?

The engine is very strong, and there is no oil leaks anywhere... The water tem was most of the time around 200F, and went up to 220F when I started to do city stop and go. Is it normal?

Oil temp didn't move much and stayed at the low end of the gauge, 140-150F. Is this normal?

Since I leave in Texas, should I consider changing the radiator (original) for a aluminium one, lighter and more efficient?

PS: I also did my 1st 360deg spin out, at low speed, which I am not too proud about. Slick tires, ignorance of the car reactions, linked to my rookieness in driving may have caused it... Will do better next time

I second Jim's comment on the alarm. The first month I had my car I had the alarm yanked out as it was causing some intermittant issues. The shop that did it said most aftermarket alarms are junk and actually wear out after 5-6 years and cause headaches. Do a lojack if you are worried.

Yes I am talking about normal car insurance. Even though RCI is insured. Always better to be safe.

Rodney,
What do you mean by insurance. RCI is insured for more than the value of the car already. Are you talking about normal car insurance?

For wheels and exhaust, email me when you're ready and I'll see what I can do about getting you the best price.

Jason-

PS Congrats on the new purchase!

Mike,

Reliable is a great outfit. I used them to transport a car from California to Texas in the past. I would make sure you have insurance coverage before the car is picked up regardless of the carrier.

Good Luck

Jim,

As for transport I went with Reliable Carriers Inc (RCI), who were recommended by the seller. They are used exclusively by GM for their prototypes and show room cars. And he had success with them in the past. Cost is same everywhere anyway...

For tyres I got some P7 identified and will probably go with that.

As for the inspection, the car is 79, so I beleive in Texas you have an obligation for 25 years of yearly inspection. Next should therefore be last.
That said the car is already without cats. What is the story with Georges car? I would be interested to get the inspection passed without having to change anything at this point.
Thanks in advance,

Congrats Mike and welcome to our addiction.
I used Solo Motors,Springfield, MO (417-861-1106, 833-0269) from a rec from Norwoods. They have enclosed trailers and do a lot of exotics. I was very pleased with their service. Be very careful on transportation outfits. I've heard and read some horror stories.

Check the archives for info on almost every topic you've asked about.

I can't help w/ transportation, but for detailing Zaino has a lot of fans, as does Leatherique for the interior.

Tire suggestions are across the board, but the Bridgestone S03 seems to be popular. You can go a size larger front and rear, many have done it w/ no negative results.

You might not need to re-install the cats, Georges car passed inspection last month and his exhaust system is way past stock.

Stay away from alarms, they're nothing but trouble. Besides, that's what insurance is for.

Congrats on the new car!

That's it! I purchased my 1st ferrari this past w-e. 79 308 GTB. EXCITED!!!!!
I need to arrange transportation, so I have 2 to 3 weeks before it comes down to me.

In that mean time, I would like some recommandations:

I plan on shipping the baby in enclosed trailer.
Any advise/experience about transportation companies?

What products and guidelines do you use to detail the exterior, the interior, the engine bay, and the undercarriage?

What do you recommend as 16" replacement tires? I can find some P7 in 205/225, but does it make a difference to put something else, like even 225/245?

What type of exhaust would you recommend? I have a 14 years old ANSA at the moment, but will have to put the catalytict converter back on for the inspection (last time before exemption), and may want to put something else after, such as TUBI. Is TUBI ceramic coated? Does the heat of some of those after market exhaust can cause problem?

What alarm system do you recommend. Are there points during installation to be worry about?

Thanks to take the time to answer my 1st set of questions. I will have more general very soon...
