Texas recently passed a series of laws that include significant increases in fines for repeat driving offenses. Here's the fines for DWI.

First offence up to $500 + $1000 surcharge for next three years

Second offence up to $500, loss of license, $1500 surcharge for next three years

Third and additional offence up to $2000, automatic jail, loss of license, $1500 surcharge for next three years

For speeding and other offenses, there is a point system, similar to other states. However, each point carries an additional $25 surcharge plus whatever fine the court assigns.

A number of new laws are elevated to felony offences, e.g. DWI with a minor.

I was driving from Marble Falls to Austin and oncomming traffic alerted me to a speed trap ahead. As I rounded a turn, I got hit by at least 3 different kinds of radar and laser from a big Black pickup truck! With state patrole ensignia on the doors!

This is a natural outcome when government runs low on funds. They send out the constabulatory forces to squeeze revenue from the unwitting.

Someone tacked up a sign where they got busted to warn of the place and the cop had not moved or continued to use the same place so the laughter slowed him and the cop was in fact running a speed trap right where the sign said....

I stopped by the main DPS office here in Austin. Wanted to setup an account. That way when they pull me over they can just swipe my credit card and send me on my way :-)

Houston has been using Toyotas Camrys on the beltway for about a year, sneaky bastards.

For the street racers in Westhiemer, cops have been using a custom riced out Honda Accords & Civics. Mainly for street racing stings.

I was joking with the unamerican comment. I myself have never owned a domestic (or Canadian) car.

Years ago when I was but a lad street racing on Forest Lane, there was a hopped up Gremlin yep that's right a Gremlin with a 455.

You would race him then the red lights would come on from a car behind. The kid was a Cops son. It all worked out okay for the Cops until they pulled over a judges son. The Judge through out all the tickets for entrapment.

We just need a good Judges son to get nailed ;)

I read about something similar on another message board -- apparently, a few of the burbs have Mustangs or Camaros and some other cars that are unmarked and done up to look similar to the street racer crowd and they will pull up next to you and rev the engine. If you take the bait, the you're toast.

As far as entrapment goes, they aren't forcing you or making you do anything. It's up to you to respond to another fast looking car.

They are hitting the Toll Way today with Motorcycle cops... I guess because noone seems to see motorcycles at all (sorry 2 wheeled bias) and they can creep right up on you
(trust me there are a lot of people out there who don't see us on 2 wheels)

I've never seen any form of law enforcement in a foreign car. They always use domestics, right?

Channel 5 said that there is going to be a major crackdown on spedding and red light running in Arlington and other areas around DFW. Setting up a bunch of spped traps.

Anybody recommend a good Radar detector?

I think Tillman was the one that had a cop at night (unknown to him) come up behind him almost in a way egging him on to race.

Driving through Oklahoma a few weeks ago I noticed many unmarked highway patrols in various models and colors.

On the way to work this morning I saw a trooper pulling over a car. What was interesting is the other trooper that pulled up behind him. A Black Mustang with flashy yellow stripes/flames... With a radar gun etc.

Looks like the troopers are practicing a little entrapment..
