I got a chance to run the TMS infield road course this last weekend with Bob Bondurant driving the Shelby Series 1. I didn't think that little <2 mile course could be fun, but having Bondurant driving, oh man, was that fun. The only other place I have run is TWS, before and after the outside addition. That's a fun place. I'm taking the Lotus to the Panoz track day at TMS in July and we'll be running the full 3.x mile ALMS course. Can't wait to try a top speed run on that oval portion... |

I know Oscar P, he is apart of the NTAG (North Texas Audi Group). He has a sweet S4, really nice guy! |

Well, someone sent an e-mail out about how Gunter Ring was doomed and Oscar was fired and they were selling the land. Then Oscar replied back that wasn't true and they're still shooting for a December open date. I don't think it will happen though. If they actually go through with Gunter Ring, I think it may be one of the best road tracks in the world, much less Texas. They bought that land close to Frisco for $500k and then Frisco became the place to live a few years ago and that land is now worth something like $4 mil. I think that profit is too tempting to the investors. Sell the land and build the track on cheaper land. I don't think the full course at TMS will be one of the best we have around, but I love doing different courses. Here in 2 weeks I'll be doing TWS backwards for the first time. No Problem Raceway is having a race here in a few months. Check our region under www.sccaforums.com. However, the SCCA won't race there yet because it's not considered safe enough. |

To me, TMS's road course also seemed "a bit boring and a bit scary" (oxymoron??) But, after doing Panoz there I can say that it was actually a really fun track. It is a bit scary with the walls, although for me, not so much the walls outside the oval, as the wall on the left of the fast switchback in the infield. Before driving there, it seemed like it would be two boring TWS type flat out sections with autocrosses between, but the infield is really challenging, and braking really hard from really high speed is something you don't do much at MSR or TWS, unless you run TWS backwards, which is also very interesting. While it is unfortunate, we don't have many tracks to choose from in Texas, I do like the variety offered by TWS and MSR, with lots of flowing high speed corners at TWS and MSR being technically challenging with a beautiful surface and lots of off camber. I havn't done Hallet or Heartland. Anybody been to No Problem in La. What is the latest on the Gunterring? |

So, in the general group there's an interesting thread on what's the best track... specifically, for the tracks in this area, what's best? and why? I've only driven MSRanch and TWS. I love MSR's lack of walls and flat runoffs. Otherwise, I rate the two fairly close... but I've driven *way* more at MSR than at TWS, so I may be biased. Rob posted this list in the general thread, so I'll save him the effort of re-posting: 1) Hallett at Hallett, Oklahoma 2) Texas World Speedway 2.9 at College Station, TX 3) Heartland Park at Topeka, KS 4) Motor Sports Ranch at Fort Worth, TX 5) Texas Motor Speedway at Fort Worth, TX TMS looks a bit boring and a bit scary with all the hard walls... (then again, I may be traumatized by all the 360 carnage I saw there at the Ferrari Challenge ;^). What do you think... is it worth spending a weekend there instead when I could be at MSRanch?? For my few rare distance trips, would others agree I should be targetting Hallet instead of TWS?? Why? The lap video that's online does look pretty nice... but you can only tell so much from a video. Thanks! |
