Thomas,
you have to follow your heart. If you prefer the 355 you should go that way, if you like the 348 equal you are better off getting the 348 and wait for the 355 to hit rock-bottom.

Ken - beside what has been mentioned...
The 355 has power steering, 6 speed tranny and a 3.5 liter engine with 8 throttle bodies and 5 valves per cylinder which gives it that distinctive sound :-)

Yes, Martin - by way of example, you've nailed it.

Ken, as Martin pointed out, is it worth the $25K price spread regardless of configuration?
Suppose you have plenty of dough, yet the 348 and 355 have an equal appeal:
355 prices are still slowly but surely free-fallin', while 348's are closer to price rebound.
Aforementioned price structure also allows one who chooses the 348 to use the price gap between it and the 355 to not only attain, but more importantly - maintain and sustain.

I do not quite understand your question...Like buy a 250PF or a 355 Coupe if price is the same?

Barging in from the Left Coast - I'm glad to see the question handled in a non-toxic manner. By some accounts, the 348 would be my secret shame, as I can't help but admire it, no matter what new model has followed in it's wake. By the same token, I embrace front-engined GT's of each era.

Thankfully, I'm a patient man, and not given to the "Showoff" mentality, as in having an F-Car for the sake of it. Which is a good thing, because my disposable income is indeed, disposed of. Which leads my quandary to an inadverdent, but well-intentioned post-hijack:
All things (passion, as the aforementioned cars "speak" to me and "pass through me" on the metaphysical level) being equal, including pricing on the used market - When the opportunity avails itself to a person such as myself, should that person focus on the newest or the oldest?

Last, but not least - You Squids are a good lot.

Ken,
Both of these are "go-karts" and are fun to drive. The 348 is a bit more raw in my opinion, especially as Martin stated, without the power steering. I, too, am fond of the fact that this is the last car that Enzo had a hand in designing. It's just too bad that Montezemulo (sp?) made that one comment that gave the 348 an inauspicious beginning and "bad rep"

I think the 355 is a beautiful car and has one of the most musical exhaust notes, but the 348, in my opinion is severely under-valued and overlooked in the Ferrari world. It is an 8 cyl ferrari that you can keep with classic and modern lines.

Get one - later years are best. Most of the updates and gremlins are worked out by then. I would recommend a tb or possibly ts. Then, you have the option to track it. Test pipes would be nice - challenge exhaust even nicer. I've heard the tubi on both... the 355 is amazing, but the 348 is music to the ears as well.

Speedline wheels would be a great addition, also tons of CF options are available.

For $40-65k, how can you go wrong?

The early 355's will still set you back at least $70-75.

I've driven an 86 mondial and really, it's a far different driving car. while it is also very nice, it is far more "tame" in comparison, in my opinion. The 348 is one that can really be raced! :-)

my .02.

Ken,
difference is $25,000 on a Berlinetta or Spider.

Worth going the extra mile, not in my book.

I personally love the 348. Had one for 3 years and it was my most reliable car I had. Love the fact it has no power steering. Love it was the last car Enzo had his hands in. I love the style and love the power and feel of the car.

The 355 is slightly faster. Has more electronics (an we know what that means in italian). Has more modern looking lines although most body parts are exchangable with the 348.

You can make a 348 look much better with $1500. Also faster. Testpipes instead of the CATs will add 15HP at least and spacers will make the car look awesome. Get a chrome shiftknob and you are set.

So you're going to abandon the 308 qv fold huh? Just kidding, I would think the 355
because it's newer generation technology, but if you ask Martin he probably prefers the 348.
Also don't forget engine out service for both.

What is the price difference between these models and is the extra worth going to the 355 vs 348 for a guy coming from a QV?
