I recently became disenchanted with the WWoC parts department. They couldn't be nicer, but I was recently quoted $167 per axle for Porterfield R4S pads and $12.47 each for the phillips screws that hold down the shift gate. I ended up buying the pads from Porterfield for $170 for BOTH front and rear. I called another F-dealer and the shift gate bolts were "only" $7.30 each.

Len thanks for the info. When I did mine they would not even talk about doing just the belts.

Len

I think you did get some good reccomendations:

1)Eli knows the guy at Auto Elite in Fort lee pretty well and I know recommends him

2)Byran is very well known and respected. I have only used him once for a 15k and was satified. Adam G has used him extensively and I am pretty sure is very happy. I beleive Adam's dad used to have Byran service a bunch of cars for him many years ago and he was happy.

3) Classic Coach has a great reputation and Bret works there :-)

4) Bruce W uses Will de Groot (exotic cars USA) and I beleive is very happy. Will also has a national reputation but may be a little far for you. He also used to sponsor this site

In the end you will have to make you own decision and then decided whether you give them the repeat business

David, Marco at Algar quoted me two prices?one for a belt change only (about $1500 parts/labor), and one for a complete 30k.

Hi Brett, how are you doing? I think you hit the nail on the head. Many places can do the service, but how many really take the time to do it right? I'm just not seeing a resounding recommendation from anyone?"This is the place to go!" Maybe I'm being to critical. Apart from price, distance, and reputation, I guess I'm looking for a stronger recommendation. I would recommend my 911 shop to anyone without a moment's hesitation. Your story is exactly what I'm trying to avoid.

Oh well, the research goes on...

Thanks everyone. I'll keep you guys posted.

And thanks again Hutch for your eMails.

Len - The one thing I found with dealers is you just can't go in and have a belt change, they will only to do the full service. Some independents are more than dealers, I have found this also with some quotes. What do they - WWOC - say the charge is for removal and install of the engine as a make up of total labor, $$ and/or hrs?

Bret, I hear ya but I would think they would want to look at the car first before telling him to pull the engine

Just some fyi. A lot of places will want to pull the engine if it is the first time they are servicing the car just to make sure everything is right when they're done. The worst thing would be to do a whole service and then find out the shifter shaft seals leak, etc. Also, often times first time cars coming in have some creative servicing which one would want to correct, and often requires more labor, which is multiplied if the engine is in the car.

My car was serviced by a reputable independent by the PO, somewhere in southern NY state (don't have the name with me, have it at home). They just did everything half ass, 20k miles after the service was done the car was leaking oil bad, a drive bearing was shot to hell risking belt failure, etc. Anybody can "service" the cars but IMO there are few places out there that service it right. They are out there though, just be careful who you choose.

some 8's do have to come out 348, 355 but not a 328. if they tell you it is easier to pull it and service it fine - what is the cost savings?? if they want to charge you more to pull it then I would not use them. In the end the factory says it can be done right with the engine in.

David, I did call AutoSport. They were even higher than the dealer quotes I received.

WWoC told me that they pull the engine for a major. I thought one advantage of an 8 cylinder was that the engine did not have to come out?

This is driving me crazy! I have no problem paying a fair price, but talking to these guys is like comparing apples and oranges. One includes A/C service in a major, one doesn't...

Is there an advantage to going to a dealer in the odd chance that something goes wrong?

Any sense in just doing the timing belts/cam adjustments at a dealer, and other less critical things (fluids/filters) at an independent?

Also considering ordering the parts from Italy to avoid paying the ridiculous mark-up.

Its easier to find a doctor.

alling Autosport Designs in Mineola, LI. 516-248-0066. Ask for Antoine.

My only "service" experience with them was having a PPI done on a 308QV. It was red with a brown interior and red piping, but that's a story for another thread! Their price was lower on the PPI than what I was quoted elsewhere. I've heard from a 308 owner on the board that their work is excellent.

You should call Classic Coach, I have no idea how much services cost there, never really thought about it. I have the number in my cell phone here, it's 1-908-352-3939. I hear they do good work...

Len, I had a major done by WWOC last year on my 308QV, about $3,600 ish. Last year they offered 15% off. This year I received a promo from them it indicated 10% off. They worked with me as I also had a new clutch and a rear main seal done at the same time.

adam G is having his done by bryan right now - I know Eli likes auto elite but I never see anyone there??? you could try classic coach - bret works there (good or bad?? :-)) but the prices are prob like a dealer. 4200 sounds high with the winter discount - I think they quoted me 3000- 3500 last year

Well, its time. Timing belts on my 328 will be five years old this November, so I'm thinking of getting it over with. Apart from the two feet of snow in my driveway, my real dilemma is where to have the work done. Dealer vs. independent.

Made some calls?Algar and WWoC want $4200, this includes their winter discount. I spoke with Brian Vignale down in Short Hills?he's more reasonable at $2500-$3500. These prices do not include ignition components. Haven't called Vinny at Auto Elite yet.

Anyone in the NY/NJ area had a major done recently?
