Peter, Get down to Boca, buy a condo, register all of your cars down there and save Big$$$. Calculate the amount of money you will save all these years and you will pay off the condo down there. I have presently 5 cars registered in florida and I pay almost 4,000. Zero deductable, 03'530i, 02 M3 cab', 98' Volvo S70, 03 Pt cruiser, and a 99 Camry. all with glass and 250, 500 coverage.

I drove my F cars on Long Island for 15 years before movinig to Florida and never had a front license plate and never had a problem. I only got stopped once and had the plate INSIDE the front hood. No problem, besides front plates are ugly and "aerodynamically incorrect".

Ken, that was my car at WWoC. I didn't get there until later in the day but really enjoyed the event. Good luck with the plate.

Would it be easier to buy a lot somewhere in PA and register the car there so that you don't need a front plate? Then just drive over the border for an inspection and who knows the lot might actually go up in value. Just a thought.

Thanks Peter, I'll give the pepboys mount a try. I also had a wonderful time at WWoC today. Was that your Mondial I saw today? As expected, most Ferraris there don't have the front license plate mounted. However, I did see one NJ Fcar with a license plate mounted right behind the lower front winshield (on the driver side) using plastic suction cups. I wonder if this is sufficient.

Ken, the Pep Boys universal mount worked fine on my Mondial. I used backing plates and long bolts to mount it by squeezing on the grill -- no drilling required. Pep Boys carries a couple models -- one that attaches to to the plate with 4 bolts and another that attaches with only 2. The two bolt is better because you can offset the plate from the mounting point and the goal is to get the bottom of the plate positioned just slightly higher than the bottom of the air dam so that it doesn't block air flow. On the 3.2 Mondial there are two grills, so it worked best to attach the bracket to the lower grill and mount it upside down. On your 348, it looks like you would mount the bracket right side up and attach it to the lowest part of the grill. The Pep Boys bracket is about $8 dollars and is manufactured using an exotic stamped steel.

I checked DMV this afternoon and both histric or Street Rod plates, cars 1949 or earlier, are required to have two plates. Despite the fact that 75% of the 1,000+ custom cars coming to Parsippany for Lead East each year rumble past loads of police with only one plate it still isn't legal. I think I will try wiring the plate off to the side first to keep the airflow unobstructed. Last year I drilled the shocks, compressed the front and rear bumpers and purchased a small eblem to put in the center of the grill. I guess once the bumper was pulled in it made the front grill more obvious. So instead of installing a small Cavallino I will now be adding a large goldfinch yellow NJ plate up front. Better finish the fan upgrade. It looks like I will need to supplement the air moving over the radiator.

I mentioned last year, when they had the WWOC tech session last year there was a police check point litterly right outside the dealership - thankfully I think ferraris were exempt from inspection - just waived you through , :-)

I feel sorry for you Robert. Agree with Tom total BS. I think the cops are trying to maximize revenue, regardless of tactics. I also noticed that here in South Brunswick they're doing more roadblocks on 130 to check for inspection stickers and other minor violations. I guess it is time to put the front plate on. This sunday I will order a front plate holder from WWoC. Anybody know how much for a Ferrari plate holder? and alternatives? I hear getting the universal plate holder from Pepboys, is that any good? I really hate to have holes drilled into the front grill.

It is not with the following exception. It is legal to use an original year of manufacture plate on a car of the same vintage with permission from DMV. (My Deusenberg legally uses 1931 Plates in NY) IF the year your car was manufactured NYS did not require a front plate then you don't need one.
Driving without a front gives Police probable cause to stop you and all that that entails. Read the Police Blotter. Many notices begin with a no front plate stop and end with the car being impounded and towed away and the driver being led away in handcuffs.

Someone posted on this board that in some states, cars of 25 years and older are exempt. Does anyone know if this is the case in NJ or NY

Well I can vouch real time from a ticket this morning that the cost of not having a front plate in Morristown NJ is $45. Having the plate in the trunk didn't help, telling him it was historic, QQ series didn't help, bracket on order didn't help. Looks like it is the end of the quarter folks.

Andy, I've been tie-wraping it neatly to the front grill on the drivers side...the original location for the 308 seems to cut radiator flow...
I expect things to get worse on LI given the fiscal crisis the county is going through...anything they can do to raise revenue...I have just moved back to LI from NYC in January and I am amazed by all the maniac drivers...infact, Newsday ran a special all last week about the dangers of driving on LI...One cop interviewed stated that they need to inforce the laws more...so basically, they break our chops over license plates while crazy cell phone yacking soccermoms and fast and furious punk kids put everyone in danger.

I can't imagine inspection passing without the plate mounted, though I never tried. My car failed inspection because air horns are illegal in NJ (had it overturned by indicating they were OEM on the car). Mount the plate and enjoy driving the car without worrying about being pulled over. The law is clear-cut, I really don't agree that it's nitpicking to be ticketed for not having a front plate.

Paul (Pcelenta), Sorry to hear about Nassau's finest. Take comfort in knowing the a$$holes who wrote your tickets were documenting the fact that they lusted after your car. Its amazing how they waste their time on tickets like yours but don't do anything about the real dangerous situations. They're gutless.

On the subject of "excuses" how about bolting the front plate to a license plate bracket and keep it in the car. When a cop asks about the missing front plate tell him it was just knocked off by someone in a parking lot...

My 360 modena has front and back license plates. I do not think that it looks THAT BAD with them on. Cops in the Hamptons are enforcing the front license plate policy also. Anyways, here are pictures of my car and you can be the judge.

Actually, the front of the Modena is designed with a license plate in mind. I find that the plate-less Modenas look wrong.

Steve the windshield sticker is a matter of taste, but I dont know one person who feels a front liscense plate looks good on a car. The main reason for the sticker is advertising for my friends company "east coast supercharging", he takes care of me this is my way of paying him back

Rob must be a matter of taste. I see you have no front plate yet you havs some scribbling on the top of your windscreen. I'm confused here , most corvette's look good without the front plate in fact on my 63 I took off the front bumpers to give it a clean look. But taste is ??

soem states make issue you a ticket which forces you to come to the police station and demonstrate that you have rectified the violation. Never heard of the this in NJ or NY though

front plates butcher the look of cars, i would rather take 2 tickets a year then put one on...$100 a year not to have to look at that plate makes me happy

Just mount it and avoid all of the hassle. If you don't have the front plate bracket you can make one or buy a universal one at auto zone. I think mine looks ok ( see my profile). Good luck and watch out when you come upstate.

Had a parking ticket for not having the front plate. Also got pulled over in the Midtown Tunnel for not having the front plate...lucky, I had it in the car and used the "...ordered the plate holder from Italy but hasn't arrived yet" excuse... the cop had the audacity to ask why the dealer couldn't just mount one for me, and I told him that it's a "structural issue with the bumpers." - and he bought it...

Never had an issue with it here in Connecticut! Had my 308 with only a rear plate for 3 years, and my TR for only 2 months with only a rear plate. I see no reason for me to ask if it's necessary, I figure I can pead ignorance the first few times... Gee officer, I was not aware that I had to have a front plate. I will order a mounting bracket for it immediately. And that should work.

I have been ticked twice for no front plate on my 308...seems Nassau's finest have nothing better to do than to set up road side check points at virtually every exit ramp, as well as, side roads....$50 bucks each time...kinda depends on the cop..

Never had a problem with the inspection aspect; however, i have been stopped for speeding (alleged) and the issue came up; and once, the local constabulary stopped me late at nite as i was driving home, soley to harass me on the pretext of no front plate. In the latter case it turned out that i knew the cop. In other instances, with the state police, i explained that i had ordered a special mounting bracket from Italy, but, well, they are a little slow, etc. They seemed to accept that.

I am not sure I agree, I think you need to have it mounted for the inspection - if you go to a nj state facility - if you go local then maybe ok, either way, just wired it up temp for the inspection and then carry it with you

Augustine, as long as you have the front plate in your car you're ok through inspection. They'll just ask you to put the front plate against the front windshield as the car is moving through inspection. As a precaution you should always keep your front plate in your car. Goodluck.

This question goes out to all of the New Jersey and New York owners that have to have two license plates. I just got my 328 recently and there is no place to put the front plate on it. Ive asked a few guys and they said to just keep it in the car. I like this idea for asthetic reasons, but I am concerned with getting my car inspected. Will they fail my car for not having the plate on the front. What does everyone else do?
