Actually, it's a long story, but the short verison is that I will be driving down from Boston in a rental car. I'll pick up the Porsche on Saturday from a good friend of mine (who also has a 550) in Millbrook (it's on 44) and drop the rental in Poughkeepsie. On Sunday morning, the plan is to make a quick stop at the Dairy, then to shuffle off to the Glen for the races that afternoon. Monday morning I plan to get lost in the Adirondacks for a few days and then go to Montreal for the GP.

So, I don't plan to come into the city at all. Will your number be good on Saturday?

I realize that there are not that many roads in the Adirondacks. But to the extent that they exist, I'd sure like to find the ones less traveled to avoid the happy camper crowd.

But don't sweat it if you can't find the info. I have done this several times before in other parts of the country. Getting lost and then getting found can be half the fun. Sometimes I don't even take a map. I just know that I eventually want to get from A to Z. Navigating by the Sun and front porches is a great way to get to know an area.

So thanks.

Sorry Dale, i'll have to dig out that route book. How are you getting to Millbrook (as in up near Rheinbeck?) You may almost be passing my 'hood if you are coming from the city, or one of our lovely airports in Gotham. My office ph. is 212 969 3095. Call me there sometime on Friday and i'll try and coordinate with you, and at a minimum, see if i can't get you the route info before you leave, or at least before you arrive in Millbrook.

Okay, last call...

I leave Tuesday and on next Saturday (that's the 7th to those of you who don't understand redneck speak), I'm picking up a Porsche in Millbrook NY.

I then plan on driving to Watkins Glen for the races on Sunday. (The Glen is a hop, skip and jump from the Hudson Valley by my terms.)

From there, who knows...

I have 3 or 4 days to get to Montreal for the GP.

So, what are your recommendations?

I realize that there are only so many roads that go over the mountains and they are on the map.

But surely, there must be some secret racer roads where the bends are long and the traffic is gone.

So speak up! Time's a wasting...

Thx

Yes, any insights will be greatly appreciated. I'm actually picking up (shock) a Porsche in Millbrook from a very good friend of mine. I have driven North/South on the Taconic a number of times. Thank heavens for a V1 radar detector. Again, I don't have any specific plans. Thinking of going over to Lime Rock for grins. Thinking of crossing the Catskills and coming up the finger lakes into the Adirondacks thataway. From past experience, biggest problem is getting caught behind a truck on the mountain roads. Even with a high powered sports car, not much you can do about it. Sometimes you get the white bean (clear road ahead) and sometimes you get the black bean (a 20-MPH train). So any tips you have will be greatly appreciated. thx

We did some amazing roads through the Adironacks a few years ago on the Forza Mille. I still have the route book somewhere, so i'll look it up for you. I live in the lower Hudson Valley and constantly drive the roads north of me. The Taconic is a highway with wonderful wide sections (near Briancliff) and narrow twisties (north of the Croton Bridge), but, as i said it is a highway, with traffic, and cops.Rt 22 can also be fun, if the traffic is light, but it goes thru some built up areas, with shopping, etc.Rt 17 up to the Catskills is fantastic, but a cop magnet, too. The roads up near Watkins
Glen, and around the Finger Lakes, are fantastic, too. There are also wonderful side roads east and west, and some county hiways that can get you north, but it will not be the most direct route. Let me know what you prefer and i'll try to help.

Hi, next month, I'm gonna take 4 days to drive up from the Hudson Valley to Montreal for the race. Would anybody care to share some recommendations for some, uh, racer roads in the Catskills or Adirondacks or any place else? Feel free to email directly if you don't want to share this info publicly. [email protected]

thx
