>> He recharged the system, but it blew a gasket somewhere (fast) Jeremy - sorry to here about that, hope I don't have the same experience. I posted the problem in the tech section and it sounds like a result of the evaporator freezing. The fix is to make sure the freon is at the right pressure level. One suggestion was to leave the temperature control at the 3/4 level rather than turning it to full cold. This seems to work better, but I want to make it right, so I will probably take it in and cross my fingers on the compressor. Is the compressor a standard part, or is it a specialized Ferrari unit? New Vernon Coach near Morristown NJ does work on Ferraris but I do not have any first hand experience with their repair work. They did the emmisions inspection on my 1988.5 TR and some upholstery work that turned out great. Anyone had F car repair work done at New Vernon Coach? |

Bryan's in the process of repairing my 328's AC. Mine also ran cool for 30 mins and then stopped. He recharged the system, but it blew a gasket somewhere (fast) on the 287. He's changing the compressor now. Fingers crossed. |

Maybe I'll use Independent for all my servicing - I don't have a mechanic now and I've kind of given up on dealer's ability/interest in servicing older cars. Thanks again for the help. |

I can second Adam's recommendation. Bryan just completed a major on my QV which included charging and tuning my '84 A/C and it works very well. Oleh |

Bryan/Independent sounds like the place to go. I had a bad experience at a Porsche dealer where they literally drained my old freon and claimed I needed a $1500 upgrade to the new because they didn't have equipment to service the old. They weren't even supposed to touch the freon - I had only asked them to replace the vent fan motor, but they took it upon themselves to provide the "extra" service. So I wanted to be a little more selective this time. Thanks very much for your help. I'm going to post the problem in the tech section just to make sure there isn't some easy fix I'm overlooking. |

Can anyone recommend a competent A/C shop in the NJ (Montclair area)? I would like to continue using the "old" freon type (86 Mondial), but most dealers and many A/C shops require a conversion to the new Freon to work on the car. My A/C is cold for first 30 minutes, but becomes "cool" (not warm) after that. The condenser fan is running and the compressor is engaged when the A/C is not delivering cold air. |
