I know there have been many threads on this subject and Tom S. had posted a Ferrari bulletin on the process. Has anyone tried to to get a color match of this. It was from Glasurit line 54 which has been replaced. I've tried several places all coming to a dead end. This is something we all should know and some help would be appreciated. You guys are going to hate me. Ever since I got the 206 I now have a hangup on authenticity can you believe that! Anyways here is what Tom S. had posted.

    Jon,

My guy here on the east coast did an excellent job of getting the color right on my Dino.

Might want to contact him. Maybe ship him the wheels for painting.

Mike at Delphias Collision in West Chester, PA. Don't recall the number.

    Jon,
Talk to Gary Bobileff - tell him Andrew with the Fiat Dino referred you. His shop is amazing and he is a good source for information. Good luck! Andrew

    Found it: 610-431-1660.

    Mike Franz, Delphias Collision.

He's done probably 10-15 Dinos over the years and owns a very nice GTS.

Guy we are not looking for painters

BUT paint color and finish matchers

Glassurit 54 line was replaced with 55 line

need to compare differences, 55 line may also be discontinued

Most painters are using a 2 stage Mercedes wheel paint color, with little to no pigment

    John's question is quite specific.

Beckman and David Carte whould be asked what manufacturer, product and color code they are using.

A semi gloss clear coat is highly recommended.
Strip the wheels with a media, and prime accordingly zinc chromate works well

Devil is in the detail and prep

Here is what Beckman gave me.
    PPG global
    Ultra fine aluminum Toner
#767. He wasn't sure of the# but with the rest of the info the paint supplier can look it up.
This is a base coat with semi-gloss clear.

I'm going to try 1 wheel next week and we'll see how it looks.

    How did it turn out?

I bought a set of the Dino Cromodoras from Kurt, aka Turtle55, in Escondido and he had painted them very nicely. Very skilled car guy with several sets of dino wheels.

I would suggest the PPG Global.

I bought new XWXs for the Dino and thought I would take this opportunity to strip, crack check and repaint my original magnesium wheels before I had the tires were mounted.

I had a very knowledgeable shop order the paint based on the Ferrari Technical Bulletin information supplied in this thread.

The paint arrived and after testing the paint on a strip of metal, the shop confirmed that the color does not come close to matching the Dino wheels on my car or two other Dinos in the shop. The color is clearly a darker gray than used on the Cromodoras.

Perhaps Jon's PPG formulation is the way to go or just leave it to your local expert to find a close match but I just spent $400 invalidating the Ferrari bulletin paint code.

    FYI...Keith

This is interesting as I took my L-Series (and therefore magnesium) wheels to the UK best know wheel refurbisher (http://www.pristinealloywheels.co.uk/) and they could not strip them as it seems the current products being used are too strong for older Ferrari wheel in addition to having to remove the attached chrome bezel prior to stripping. I would love to learn how Keith's wheels will be processed.

    What code did you use?

And it's possible the mixer %$^&ed it up, send it back and tell them to tint it....

Stripping them is a hugely bad idea, IMO.

Just sand them out and PAINT them, unless you see areas where the Factory coating has failed.

the "new" paint color is different from the original color for the seventies. I have a set of new nos 15x9's that were kept in a house since new and the orignal paint is matt and poorly applied. The "restored" cars are trully over done compared to original spec.

I'll ask the shop if I can post their process. They've done it for many of their customers with great results. Suffice to say, it's not just blast and squirt.

    Cheers,

    Keith

Agreed, matt and 'casually" applied might be a better word, it has stuck on there over 30 yeras!

Is the paint color for the Campagnolo wheel the same as for the Cromodora wheels?

    Thank you,

    Scott

Argento 101 is the wrong colour IMHO. It is too bright a silver and more akin to what was used from the 355 onwards. Many cars appear to have had their wheels restored over the years and bright silver has become the norm. My car's wheels were in untouched original condition prior to the restoration but were flaking in places. They were colour matched to a FIAT dull silver which looks almost grey with a hint of blue in dull light. In bright light is has more of a silver appearance.

Does anyone have a record of this please? Chris

What is the final consensus on the correct paint to use? The PPG Global recommendation from Beckman?

Keith, which shop in Seattle redid your wheels? Did they go all the way to Mag and properly retreat the bare Mg before painting...or did they just go down to primer?

    Thanks.
