Are the inside of the exhaust tips supposed to be left natural or are they painted? I recall seeing a picture somewhere with inside of the tips painted.

Nope...the Dino I saw in a picture had the inside of the exhaust tips painted red. It was hideous, but made me wonder if maybe they should be painted (eg, black) to reduce corrosion...with high heat paint, of course.

As I recall the inside of the ANSA tips come in an orange/red color

Actually, if you look really closely to the edges of my exhaust tips in original post, they may still have some remnants of the paint...or it's rust.

I have the same remnants on the right tip- I remember changing the exhaust with my Dad back in the early 80's. We dug a hole in the back yard in order to "rotate" the exhaust enough to insert it passed the right had side of the car... Mom was very upset as I recall - we came close to her flower garden...

    cheers

The red is probably a primer, as on the Golden Gate Bridge.

Some Ansa tips came red while others came black. This was a thin paint just to give them a 'finished' look for sale. The paint was poorly applied and so cheap that it vaporized after a few heat cycles and was made black anyways from the exhaust within a cople of drives.

I suspect that people thought you were kidding because of how impossible it would be to ever maintain. If you painted the tips at your house they would be black by the time you could drive to the nearest car show. Kinda like asking what the correct shine for your tire treads would be.

My recollection is that at Pebble Beach one year the prep guys would apply the red-orange paint after the car arrived at the place of display.

I think a medium grey, naturally applied by the motor, looks best.

You mean my Dino doesn't burn as clean as a Prius?

I figured a nice glossy high-temp black would make them look nice and clean with a simple wipe at a show. Besides, black would go much better with my Fly Yellow Dino than orange/red.

The inside of your dino's exhaust should be chocolatey brown - the best indication that your webers are tuned up correctly and that you are driving your car lots !

I have seen both black and orange/red as original but more often the orange/red. Either way it is not a points deduction at concours and cannot be maintained anyways.

What can be maintained are the little Ansa stickers on the tips. The OP seems to have put on the eBay specials that are out there. Quite obviously those are incorrect as the originals for the Dino never had the thick black border on them. Most people would not notice but if we are on the subject of 100% correct and are fretting over the inside of the exhaust tips then we might as well see it all the way.

Darn! I didn't notice the difference until you mentioned this and I checked out the picture of NOS Ansa. At least it was only $20 for the set...will be harder to remove them if I can find the correct ones.

Nice Dino color! How often do you need to apply it and is it special paint?
