I pick up Eric's Dino in Berkley, Ca yesterday morning and trailered it back to my hobby shop in San Diego. This is a 72 GT that was originally Silver with Black Vinyl interior. As you can see by the pictures there's a good deal of work to do. It was painted red in 1978 over the original silver exterior. The Dino is most likely going back to Silver with either red or black leather interior. No decision has yet been made on rather to keep the USA lights or exactly how far to go on the restoration. Tomorrow stripping of parts starts and the fun begins!

    Jon,

You are truly amazing! How many Dinos do you have in process at the moment?

That looks like Patrick Ottis' place - if it is, I think I saw that Dino while mine was being worked on. Definitely in need of your TLC.

Are those fire extinguisher nozzles on the engine compartment firewall? If so, it would be nice to see how the system was installed. I watched the video of that Lambo Miura SV burning in London. Makes me want a fire system on my car.

Much progress today as the interior was removed, the fuel tanks, all the side glass and other odds and ends. Tomorrow the front and rear windscreen and all the suspension. This is not a 100% strip but we are getting pretty close. Then there is always the question where to stop. You always find more to do such as the heater boxes today which I'll need to do, broken fuel tank straps I'll have to make, window cables in a rats nest and few other items that weren't on the list. I should finish up by the end of the week, then off to paint and body.
A few interesting things today as I've never seen USA painted on the fuel tanks and also the body parts which are #600 seem very early for the serial # of the car.

I seem to recall that Euro Dino fuel tanks are different than USA model fuel tanks...perhaps the reason for the USA marking?

Yes they are different, just that I had never seen them identified by the factory this way.

If you are this far already, tell the owner it's worth going all the way like your other restos'. Fiberglass out, only shell on chassis, etc. Stopping here would be "half ass".

I always prefer that way. I think the extra cost would make the value of the car considerably more. Far more than the extra cost to take everything out. Everyone must work within their own budgets though. It's 3 more days to completely strip and would add another 4 days to put it all back. If you do that then you can media blast everything and have a really clean job. The media blast could uncover some unpleasant surprises and adds some additional costs in blasting and metal primer. It seems it would be about a wash with hand stripping though, which would have to be done anyways. It also adds time to work on the fiberglass and the other parts that would come out. What I don't understand is that Steve (painter)tells me he must charge more for the whole job when he gets a clean canvas to work on versus a car he will hand strip! Something I don't understand.

Dumb question, but once you remove an original fiberglass floor/belly pan, can it be reused to maintain the originality? I sometimes wonder what's above my belly pan, esp since a few of the rivets are no longer attached, either due to breakage or corrosion. Yet I can't see a clear delineation between the side edges of the belly pan and the (black) rocker panel on the sides.

One thing I found, is a mountain of rivet heads inside the chassis tubes and all the other usual hiding places. Rattle cans! Have to take them out :)

Ron, what's above your belly pan? Rust and broken rivets.

    Regards, Alberto

A question for those of you with plating knowledge: why three different types of plating? Why yellow cad AND clear cad, for example? Different wear characteristics? Was one more expensive but had special properties needed for certain parts? And why black zinc? Cheaper than regular zinc? When I was restoring British cars, the cars I was dealing with used almost nothing but bright zinc - cheap and ubiquitous. Some cad on a few parts, never figured out why.

What about nickel plating? My understanding is that some suspension items are supposed to be nickel plated.

Curious as to how you prep parts for plating. Just degrease and wire brush, or what steps do you take?

Pretty much just degrease them as they go in an acid bath. Some parts I media blast like door strikers and catch, the brake calipers if looking bad. It help on the larger parts to get an even finish.
